Bntered at Douglas Post-office a? Second Class Mail Matter. Wednesday, November 2, 1910. New Douglas Enterprises With the beginning of November, a number of new business ventures have been launched in Douglas. They indi eate growth and progress and are worthy of special notice. Thd Alaska Drug company, a tlrm composed of Dr H. C. DeVigbne, D.J. ; Kinzie and James Daniels, having pur chased from the Rdmiuistrator the ; store of Julius Heubner, asks for recog nition. The stock has beeu enlarged and made complete, the store room has beeu repainted, decorated and enlarged. An attractive feature is a ladie>' rest room. Mr. K. b. Bell, a practical phar macist of large experience, is iu charge of the establishment, with Miss Maida Cornwell as assistant. The Republic is a refreshment em porium opened up ou Front street, op posite the Douglas hotel, by William Auderson and Ed Ringuette. A com plete stock of the best brands of liquor j is offered to the thirsty public. A specialty Is made of Wuerzbnrger beer. Cassie Secrest will also cater to the wants of the public in a neat, new buildiug ou Front street belonging to A. Murray. The interior furnishings . are especially attractive. The bar is iu Mission, made of uative woods, by L.G. Thomas. Just across the street is the estab- . llshment of Chas. Stevens and Tony ' (Justi. These young men are not strangers in the community and show their coufldeuce in the town by the in vestment of their cash. Julius Mohler has leased the Nata torium and will open up a roller skat- ; ing rink. He has ordered a lot of the i late model skate and bought a mechan- i ical orgau. Some gay times are in store for the youug people of the Island this j winter. Under the new management it is probable that the hall will be open for basket ball contests and the like. The Fair While the sale held by the Ladies' League Thursday Dight is not especially prepared with reference to Christmas, there will be some things there which will make very dainty gifts. The fore handed will take notice and be on baud early. There are a few hand-em broid ered liueu haudkerchiefs which can be purchased in sets of three for ladies or gentlemen. Every man will want to wear a poinsettia, the popular Cali fornia flower, wbich has lately been produced in Douglas. The old fash ioned fish pond has received a new set ting and comes out as "fishiug through the ice." This popular pastime will have a new fascination, as there are said to be several new kinds of fish that can be caught. The ladies have met weekly for many months and the public may be assured that they have not labored in vain. They should be generously patronized. The League is the oldest woman's or ganization on the Island and has often shown its public spirit and practical helpfulness. "Happy" Calaham has severed his connection with the Juneau Record, to assume the hr.mble station of a manu facturer of "bricks without straw." This is a literal fact, for Mr. Calaham has decided to devote his energies to the making of bricks and building blocks. His "raw material" will come largely from the sands from which the mills at Treadwell have extracted the gold. This is an industry new to Doug las, but well worthy of encouragement. Jack Henson succeeds Mr. Calaham as ? chaser of news. School Notes Regene Miller, Reporter. The Uastineaux society will post pone the program which was to be given this coining Friday until Friday, Nov. 11. I The botany class had its first expedi- ; tion Thursday afternoon and weut as far as the prairies. Elvin Kearn entered Miss* Werner's room last week. The giant swings are now finished with wooden handles at. various heights so !? hat more than one pupil can swing at a time. The girls' basket ball team held a meeting Monday eveuing to decide ou their suits. Black middy blouses trimmed wllh red were choseu for the High school team and black and white lor the eighth grade team. The feuits will be fiuished some time next week, by which time the girls hope to have the Natatorium to practice in. Halloween passed quietly as tar as the school grounds were concerned. No damage was done, though the merry makers tied knots in the ropes of the girls' swing. Dwight Edwards Coffee at Rogers.
