The Douglas Island News Butored at Douglas Post-office a? Second Class Mail Matter. PUBLISHED EVERY WEDNESDAY Dad Cuts Some Ice We happened in a home the other night and over the door saw the legend worked in letters of red, "What is the home without a mother?" Across the room was auother brief, "God bless our dad." He gets up early, lights the fire, boils an egg, grasps his dinner pail aud wipes off the dew off the lawn with his boots while many a mother is sleeping. He makes the weekly hand out for the butcher, the grocer, the milk man aud the baker, and his little pile is badly worn before he has beeu home an hour. He stands off the bailiff aud keeps the rent paid up. If there is a noise iu the night, dad is kicked iu the back aud made to go dowu stairs and kill him. Mother darus the socks, but dad bought them in the first place, and needles and yarn afterwards. Mother does up the fruit; well, dad bought it all, and the jars and the sugar co-t like the mis chief. Dad buys chickens for Sunday dinuer, carves them himself and draws J the ueck from the ruins after every j body else is served. "What is home without a mother?" Ves, that is all j right; but what is home without a 1 father? Dad, here's to you. If it wasn't for you we wouldu't be here, i You've got your faults ? you may have lots of 'em ? but you are all right and we'll miss you when you're gone. ? Ex. Fairbanks has given up the idea of a postal savings bank. The Times says that the camp is not yet a place of small savings. That may meau that the camp is not a place for savings of any kind. Ordinarily those who ac cumulate wealth save first in small | amounts. There is an old saying that still has a right to be recognized, which runs, "Take care of the pennies and j the dollars will take care of them selves." Douglas is uot like Fairbanks. There ate lots of people here who are paving a few dollars a mouth. Some have bought land and are .slowly j ay ing for it; others have money in the bank, it a ostal saviugs bauk could be opened in Douglas, thousands of dollars would be deposited there in small amouuts. It would benefit many, for then they would acquire the h?bit of saviug. Soon they would be able to maintain au account in one of the large banks. A man with money iu the bank is never a hobo, aud seldom an idler. He feels his importance as a man of affair.*, and his couduct is gov erned by a steadier hand aud a cooler head. Dongias has not given up the idea of a portal savings bank, for uoth iug would be better for the interests of the people aud the town. Mayor Valeutine decliued to again bo a candidate for councilman in Juneau and said: "The future prosperity of Jar.eaa is assured aud the coming year ie the most important in its history. The people should lay aside their petty differences aud turn out to a man and give all the assistance that may be in their power to the great industries that are being developed immediately sur round if us. We must remember that capital aud business are easily fright ened aud take wiugs; we mu.-it eucour age every iudustry aud by being agree able aud trying to please we will get things started right and when we get the busiueiis we must be agreeable and keep it comiug. If we discourage and hamper it we must expect to lose the great opportunities -that uow seem to be kuockiug at our doors. Let us all work together and make Juneau the happy aud prosperous home city which it is eutitled to be." The strike of a million coal miners in Great Britain and a prospective strike of the anthracite miners in this conn try should please Gifford Pinchot, says an exchange. It will operate to "con serve" many millions of tons of coal, precisely as Alaska's coal is being conj served.
