JOHN Henson, City Clerk. Attest: M. 6. Rogers, Chairman of Finance Committee. In these rapid days when municipal i oorruptioii and graft w common i that the station is hardly shocked when new disclosures are made, a town has ' a right to feel proud when its officers j do their duty and its busiuess is con | ducted with eaution and zeal. In this I respect Douglas is especially fortunate,! and the anuual statement of the ftuan- ' cial affairs of the eity w more than eu couragiug. N-ot only do we gather this comfort because of the cash balance which the statement shows on the right side of the ledger,, but because we real ize that the eity is fast accumulating valuable properties. Among them is the city dockvwhioh will" without ques tion prove its worth by addiug to the revenues of the eky $i,00Q or $5-, 000 each year. Besides this each and every citizen is drawing a divideud- with each tou of coal purchased. Last Friday att'eruoou M.J.O'Couuor took his new launch out for a trial spiu aud a bunch of frieuds were takeu aloug as cargo. Mike's uew boat has a name? the Dorothy VV.T hut we would not be surprised to wake up some morning to flud that she had beeo re christened "Pat." Otherwise the new craft is a good tit, aud has plenty of power aud speed. She also has wiu dows on all sides like an observation car. Sooner or fater every man in Alas ka gets the gas boat bug, and why not? j A g-i8 boat takes the place of many en joyments that are out of the question here. It becomes a substitute for a l?uggy, or a motorcycle, an automobile j t or a riding mule, the trolley car or the coach and- four. The first place visited was Sheep creek. A comfortable float and a good wharf wer9 the first things t to greet the eye. These have been built by the Gastineau Mining Gompauy. Sheep creek is becoming a pretty lively oarnp. On the wharf are two large warehouses. Near by a large carpenter shop is waiting for machinery aud tools. Nerrt along the line of the water front is a large cookhouse almost ready i for use, with a dining room capable of seating 300 men. Then come the foun dations which are. being put in place for six large bunk houses. On the I hillside a buncb of men with a donkey engine are tearing out stumps and clearing a site for a- stamp mill. Up the steep mountain a little tram road ascends, forming a connecting link to i the tunuel which is te lap the big ore bodies of Silver bow basin. There ie no prettier place on Gastiueau^channel, | protected as it is from tbe cold winds, ' by mountains that tower in grandeur, j but are not so- near ae to seem to threaten. After leaving Sheep creek the Dorothy W. raced down to the end of tbe Island and' back, to try her speed, and1 home again in good time. Jensen has received his spring stock of wall paper. See before buying else wbsrtr School Notes Stanley Marks aud Collville Gallwas were the news reporters this morning in the assembly. Ruth Umsted has been gladly re i ceived by the fre>hmau as one of their classmates. The aopbomore boys are all wear jug long trousers now that Almond has joined the ranks. This is report card week. Margaret Umsted entered tbe seventh grade this week. The stove iu the assembly ball has beeu blacked aud the walls are decora ted with pictures. All who attended tbe high school party last Friday uight speak as if they had a good time. The high school was pleased to see so many of the former students present.
