THE DAILY APPEAL M. R. MIGHELS:::: nnnAT IOE506. art. t. ims ths imai ntetmr. We arc glad to give prominence to o gratify ins; an item as tbe following. We copy from yesterday's Eastern Slope : Tba choice of Washoe County is James F. Lewi alntoat without a dissenting Tnice. While there are doubtless aany earn who do aot concur ia all his decisions, are kaow of Boa whe duaM his nusacikina integrity, his aalitai mdusrry sad cloae habits of studs ; and these are reengnise as the essential qual Itiee that constitute a safe judicial officer. Frosa the best information we can obtain Jaaajre Learia'a axuau nation and election ia a htgiasa eomclosioB. We have ao doabt that Ormsby Coun ty will give its full concurrence to the choice to wisely made by Washoe Coun ty, for certainly, no man, who by rea son of bis tenure of office baa aaade Car sow hi residence, bas gained for hiss elf the respect of the citizens of this city and vicinity more thoroughly than Jadge Lewis; and to fax as ourself is concerned, we believe his election to be one of the most important steps to be taken by the people of this State, and wo say this in face of the fact that Lewis views on the Specific Contract Act are anything bat sound, according ta oar judgment. But we feel, in com mon with others, that be is both honest and capable, and, as such, and as an ornament to the bench, we hope to see him retained. IMTVBZMT MAKESHIFTS OF THS BB.EA9 ASS BuTIZft HEADS. We kaow it to be a fact that several of the names which are appended to the call for a Johnson meeting ia Carson were either obtained under the false pretence that the paper signed was a petition to tbe President to revoke Bee- he's appointment, or placed there an known and unauthorized by tbeir own ers. And what is more to the point, wa will, in good time give some of tbe nasnes which were dishonestly affiled to that call. And it would seem that not Jons in Carson is this disreputable dodee resorted to, as the following which we clip from Yesterday's Eastern Slope very plainly sets forth : Cttal Pfak. August !8th, I. Bditor Eastern floor. Dear Sir I a. yawr paper of the 25th inst, that the Demo cratic party haw taken it a poo themselves to mas my name, as one of their Centra! Com menu, witboat mi leave or license. 1 wish saw ta distinctly understand that I era a true Kew-iMiran, and a Radical Union man, and ia picking me op they have picked on the wrong aun. And you will please find no more room in the columns of your paper, for thus using my name in eounaetioa with any um-i iiMn mr uin party. Tunis respectfully, Felix 0"Xeil. Commenting upon tbe foregoing, the Slope say : The ab.ie eomrannieatina from Felis OTIeil exposes one of th- tricks of that great humbug the "National Union psrty." Its efficient working members are recognized uenaocrais. nrei sympathizers. The at tempt to give the new part a flavor of Union. ism by the unauthorized use of loyal names. ifMtii-peniiT irica mac win not win in an intelligent community. There are others rjesi lei Hr U etf who repudiate all con nection and association with rebels under any aisguite. SSAT4 T2. "Corpor!," the Waahineton corres pondent nt the Philadelphia Pres, in n communication beaded '"Cnnirres from the lisilerie-s" speaks as follows with relation of Senator Nye : The brilliant Senator, Governor Jas W. Xye, of Nevada, siaits for his moun tain home in tbe steamer on the lutb of August. Upon the result of the rum iag contest in that State will depend his re-election to a body of which, dur ing a short career, be has become one of tbe most steadfast and esteemed members. It is peculiarly satistactorv to coutrist the constant and unselfish patriotism of such a man as Xye with the half bearle.i deportment of other. A nature like Nye's saves a world o trouble to others and to himself. Not xpolrelic. but always definite, affirma tive, positive, and frequently Regressive, he is never approached by tbe corrupt nr. doubled by the traitors. His min i is never disturbed when a gre:it issue rises. Spontaneous, and always true, h: marches up and takes bis Ma ml among tbe right men. And bow incon ceivable is tbe influence of such a ch.tr- eeter, especially upon theyoun); men of our country! Well miy we value it as we deplore the pernicious effects of what are ciilcd conservative politicians men who, either from natural infirmities or corrant longings, out of their own de moralization demoralize others. A uiv correspondence with tbe Sunday Press will cease bit the present session witii thi letter. I can only hope that when nert I : look down from the galleries I will see tbe same gallant Congress, in spired by the same patriotism and unity that have made the first and now clos ing session one of the most exciting and interesting in oar history. s TBI rraiSITB SLKCTIOSkXAIllO TUP. Since wcmagoguery if his constant impulse, his sole political moving senti ment, (if the incentives of a shameless charlatan can be termed a sentiment) it is to be expected that the present in cumbent of the Whit House will, in this, his greatest opportunity eihaust the arts ef popular clap trap and press nto his service all tbe possible scenic effects of gilt, laquer and illusive panto ne. With these objects paramount n bis miad. he stalks fortn among tbe astonisbed natives of tbe Republic over which he so grandly presides, and. danked on the one side by the Chief General of the nation and on the other by the First Naval officer of the Union. he intrudes himself among the yeomanry oftbelandina state of magnificence. which, guaged by his own standard, is more gorgeous than anything that ever entered tbe mind of Solomon in a'l bis glory. The fact is, like many an other suddenly elrvated semi-barbarian. Johnson's ideas of tbe power and at tendant display of tbe great office which has so strangely fallen into bis keeping assimilates to that entertained by a Calmuck Tartar Chief, or an Turkish Bashaw. He is dazed with flashy ideas and is fool enough to believe tbe people capable ot being nuttibuggcd with a showing of barbaric splendor. And, as we are sorry to feel called upon to say tirant and Farragut have let their ex treme ideas of military and naval eti queue get the best of tbeir horse sense and so they have consented to go along just to form a part of tbe pageant of the Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy. But the two being along, tbe object of their presence is too obviously manifest to be misunderstood. Ani tbe meeting which tbe President and train met at the bands of Governor Fenton of New York was one of the most thoroughly appro priate and nicely conceived and execu ted of anything we have noticed. It was sternly and ponrtilliously diploma tic and Fenton bad tbe vantage ground ; and he snubbed tbe consequen tial tailor while paying due respect to tbe Presidential office, most exquisitely. Fenton smothered tbe vulgar upstart more handsomely and effectually than anybody bas yet done it. And were Johnson possessed of the instincts of a gentleman he would be very much humiliated by his Albany shower bath. Rut he will go on, parading bis brazen face and lying manner to the American people until he shall hate finished tbe destiny of one who, as we religiously believe, is appointed or Providence to give a large and final illustration of tbe ineffable folly of trusting bigb office to the hands of a man of impure breeding and tbe instincts of a professional poli tician. Tbe " plebian " is making a showing of himself which will forever debar his class from future occupancy of the Presidential Chair. So mote it be ! BY STATE TELEGRAPH From the Gold Hill News of last evening Nsw York, Aug. 30. The banquet at Delmonico's last night was a very splendid affair. Mayor Hoffman pre sided. Speeches were made by the President and Seward. West Pout, Ang. 30. Tbe Presi dential party arrived at noon, were re ceived hv the Commandant, and pro ceeded North. Ai.Bs.xr, Aug-. 30. The President ar rived at 7 o'clock, having bad a most enjoyable ride up the river, with salutes and cheers at all prominent places. The Mayor of Albany went . down on a steamer to meet the party aud officially welcome them. Tbe Mayor of Troy went down on an other steamer to join the escort. Tbe President was escorted to the Capitol through illuminated streets, crowded with people. The procession was reformed and pro ceeded to the Delavan House, where a dinner was given by the city. Chicago, August 30. The Illinois Democratic State Convention yesterday adopted the Philadelphia declaration ot principles. The Philadelphia North American, edited by tbe Mayor, says of the infor mality of tbe President's visit : It is a noticable fact that of forty -six members' of the Common Council and twenty-five members of the Selevt Council, less than twenty are now in the ci'V ; and of these a considerable number am Democrats. The Mayor is tcking the only rest ho can enjoy for a year to come, so that the absence of any muni cipal participation was unavoidable. Governor Ward, of New Jersey, has named J. C. Teaeyit, Charles 3 Olden, F. L. Frelinghuysen, R F. Field. J. T. Niscon and W. A. Newell to attend the Philadelphia Convention and convey to its members an expression of sympathy with their sufferings, confidence in tbeir patriotitm, and an assurance of aid and support in tbeir loyal purpose of securing governments republican ia form throughout the entire South. Full returns of tbe North Carolina election, bed Aug. 3d, slow that the new Constitution was rejected by 198 votes. J. J. Coombs, H. W. Hoffman, J. S. Lawler, J. D. Defrees and W. J. Caman haiiug called a meeting at Philadelphia September 3d, of the National Commit tee appointed by tbe Baltimore Conven tion of IStM, Heury J. Raymond, Chairman of that Committee, publishes a call that the Committee shall meet at the Astor House, New York city, on September 3d. Marcus Ward of New Jersey, a member of that Cutnmittee, published a letter, re-publishing the Raymond call, and saying to Raymond: You have deemed it wise and proper to abandon tbe great Union Republican party ot the countrv, and to connect vour name ar 1 influence with a new or ganization, designed to destroy the cause with which 1 sympathize and of a bu b I am in some small degree a rep resentaiive. tour puwic action bas been tucb tbat I cannot acknowledge your right to use tbe title under wuicb tbe meeting has bee:, called. The ma ture character of tbe trusts confided in you and me forbid tbat we should use them except in accordance with tbe spirit in which tbey were conferred. So deep and wide is this feeling in the pop ular mind, that all who should respond lo your call would be regarded as be trnying the party they have ceased to represent. Raymond replies: it is a matter wholly within vour own discretion, whether you attend the meet ing of the National Eiecutive Commit tee. called in this city for September 3d; but I am not aware that you bave a right lo overrule tbe action of tbe National 1'onvennon, bv which, in common with you. I was a member of tbat Committee or that of the Committee itself by which I was made its chairman aud treasurer I need not inform you tbat tbe meeting i f tbe Committee ran only be held where tbe call is made by the proper officers, and that action taken at meet ings not so called can have no author ity. My object in calling this meeting was to afford tbe committee an nppor tunity to take such action in regular form, as in its judgment tbe conditions and interests of the Imon party mat require. If its members do uot choose to attend, mv duty will be performed I am obliged for the opinions as to mv political course, which you have honor e 1 me with. I trust I do not underrate their importance, or that of the distin guished source from which they come I bave no desire to controvert or com merit upon them, though as at Drescn advised, I certainly prefer my own. hope I shall not need to add that I bave no desire to hold any official position in the National Convention of the Union party, or of any other, against the wis! of its members; but I deem it my duty especially as this is not merely a matter of personal feeling, to insist upon 'eu iarity of action as the only mode by uliicu that wish can be ascertained. 1'tTRoiT, Aug. JO. Ibe Lmon State Convention to-dav nominated Governor Crapo fur re-election, and adopted res olutions declaring that the work ol re construction belongs to Congress; that it is tbe duty of the Government to pro tect tbe Southern Union nien against rebel neighbors; tbat the spirit of the rebellion crushed, a war is revived at the ballot box, and that a necessity now exists tbat local men shall bind them selve3 together to resist it. The ninth resolution reads: i uai we scout and scorn, as un worthy of freemen, thai political bias bbeiny which says this is a white man tiovcrumtnt. It is not a while man' iioverumeiit, nor a black man's Govern iiitul; ii is God's Government, made tor man, aud all men who are lova w hatever race, color or coudition, sua have uuder iis triumphant and glortou Hag all those inaticuabie rights whic pertain lo man as man YYasHiNQToN, Aug. 30. A dispatch received to-day at General Grant's head quarters from Lieut. Gen. Sherman, dat ed Fort Laramie, says the reports of In dian troubles on tbe Plains were great ly exaggerated. Chicago, Aug. 30. Gov. Ward, of (Sew Jersey, has privately declared his intention to convene the Sew Jersey Legislature for the election of Senators and for tbe ratification of Cssjstitutional amendments, and Scovill, (be hitnorto bolting Senator, publishes a letter, pledging1 himself to do his doty as n member of tbe Republican party, and indignantly denying tbat bis former coarse was in tended or should bo taken as severing him from the Union party. Cntcsoo, Angnst 31. A special cor respondent of tbe Republican, who is with the Presidential party, nays tbe President's speech at the Delmauico banquet was very skillful ; referring now lo Gen. Grant on his ieft, and then to Admiral Farigut on his right. This wns followed by Mayor Hoffman who proposed the health of the two officers as ssppotters of the President. This placed them in n position which was not to be easily retreated from, and there is but little doubt enter tained but tbat General Grant will be so worked upon as to make speech fully denning his position. irvioa H un hotics: At the request of a large number of our citizens, we invite tbe Union men of Ormsby County to meet at the Dist rict Court Room, on Monday evening next, at 7 o'clock, to make arrange ments for giving a rousing reception to Senator Nve oo his return homo. IMS PLOT IUCUII! It is rumored tbat a petition is in irculalion among; tbe friends of Go Beebe, for the removal of Warren Was- son. Assessor of Internal Kevenae The ground assigned is, that Warren never served in tbe rebel army, and bas no pardon in his pocket.
