THE DAILY APPEAL
XXEX7 T0-CAY. cm. rac oa Tviaaisram. I3-Gp3LaI3 Fire. Between the hours of 10 and 11 o'clock yesterday forenoon, a fire broke oat from the roof of the building on the corner of Csrson and King streets, occupied in one part by Mr. O. P. Willis as a drug store and in another part by Mr. A. B. Gardner as a restaurant and lodging-house. The burning was caused by the defective securing of a stovepipe in Gardner's premises. The wind was blowing a gale at the time, and the whole block in which the building is located seem ed threatened. But the entries were very promptly on the ground, and by great exer tions, the fireoien succeeded in confining the flames to the second story and roof ol the building in which they originated. The case seemed a desperate one when the water gave out in the cistern at the intersection of Car son and King streets. A quick maneuver of the- hoseruen, however, secured a supply from the cistern at Turly's corner, and the tire was oon mastered. The building is owned by Pr. Way man, and is insured in the Pacific Company for $3,000. Mr. Willis stock, which was considerably injured by water, was also insured in the Pacific for S3.000. Mr. Gardner, whose loss is mostly from breakage and water, amounts, we should say, to about $J00 or $.500 no insurance. The insurance on the building and on Willis' stock will probably cover the losses sustained. We should be remiss if we neglected to al lude to the promptitude and ethcieney of our most e "client Fire Department on this occa sion. Better work was never done by any firemen. They are sadly in need of more hoe, however, and the county authorities end c'tizens should see that they are duly supplied. Not C.st-rrRF.n. Kilev, who shot Sheriff Smith, still remains uncaptured, although a strict search is beine made by Smith's friends and a few others interested. As soon as Kiiey is known to be entirely out of reach of all pursuit, we presume our worthy Governor or somebody else will offer a reward for his arrest. AH who are nw after Kiley are working at their own expense and on their own responsibility. Monday ertmnq't Hold mi .w. Under a provision of law (the author of which is Charles A. Sumner) the Executive is iuli.bi'ed frum offering a reward for the capture of any person who has not either committed a murilrr or escaped from custody after conviction.
