Fox of this place, the following new books from the press of D. Appleton & Co., Ne Yerk : The Empress Josephine, by Miss Muhlbach, author of " The Daughter of an Empress ;" " Marie Antoinette ;" " Berlin and Sans Souci," Ac, ic. "The Empress Josephine," although externally uniform with Appleton's editions of the other works of Miss Muhlbach, is much better printed than they, and the engravings are a great improvement on the stitf, tinted cuts, by Orr, that illustrate them. The subject of this volume is more thoroughly interesting and touching thn that of any other work yet given to us by the publishers of the writings of this voluminous author. Origin and Pro gress of Mormonism, by Tomeroy Tucker of Palmyra, New York ; EUa, or Spain Fifty Years Ago, by Fernan Caballero ; Ihr. Wil- mer's Lore, by Margaret Lee, author of "Ar nold's Choice;" Upton's Infantry Tactics, by Brevet Major General Emory Upton, U. S. A., published by authority of the Secre tary of War ; a new edition of CornelTs In termediate Orography ; and Xirho!as Xicile- by, Christmas Stories, OUrer Tvist, and the Piehrick Papers, the same being of Apple- ton's new, cheap and very desirable edition of Dickens' work all from this liberal and enterprising house. We shall be obliged to defer an examination and notice of this bud get until some future time. "A Lif of Christ" by the Eev. Henry Ward Beecher. Brooklyn-, Jan. 10, 1868. J. B. Ford & Co. Gentlemen : I am at work upon the Life of Christ, with all dili gence, and shall press forward as fast as other engagements will permit. I have long contemplated this labor of love, and I re joice that 1 am permitted to begin it under ucn favorable auspices. The materials are abundant. The diffi culty lies in selection. The last 30 years has brought to the consideration of this subject more learning and eloquence than were ever directed, within the same space of time, to one subject. Our local knowledge, too, has been vas;ly augmented by the scientific topo- graplucal exploration of the iioly J -arid. At a time when a chill mist of doubt is rising over all the Sacred Records, from an excessive addiction to material science, it would seem that good service might be ren dered to religion br reasserting in laneuaze. and by methods congenial to the wants of modern thought, the Divinity of our Lord ana Savior, Jesus t hnst. Henry Ward Beecher The Oi'exino of Tike's New York Opbea Hoise. The New York Tribune thus describes the opening of Pike's gorgeous New York Opera House : We have read no description which docs full justice to the beautiful theater whioh Mr. hike has just given us. The scene at its opening on Thursday night came nearer to a realization of the lyric splendor of which all if us at times have dreamed, but which no body has beheld in the flesh, than anything else in this country. Wide entries admit you to a magnificent vestibule, as big in itself as many a respectable play-house, around which run stately nights of stairs, and a gallery at mid-hight, such as one sees in the pictures iI old baronial halls, lnence there is ad mission by many doors to the gorgeous auditorium, where at least five hundred more people than the house could seat assembled to witness the inauguration. The soft yet bril liant light, streaming down from the dome, and scattered from hundreds of globes ; the inagnmcent colors of the decorations, white, and gold, and warmest tints of crimson, and ilelicate dove color nicked out with soft blue ; the rich satin hangings ; the glowing fres coes ; the tapestry carpets springing under the foot; the graceful lines of architecture 11 these combined with eveay conceivable magnificence of female dress, the glitter of a thousand jewels, the shimmer of golden curls and glossy silks, the smiles of pleased and pretty faces, the waving of fans, the flutter of laces, the s ft motion of delicate gloved bands, tn make a picture such as it did one's heart good to look upon. Then the scenery was plendid ; the dresses were fresh and hand some; the stage appointments were comnlete; -.here was no mark of haste or inexperience .-a aar of the important adjuncts to the re- uresentation. Jcverrthinir passed on in order ; everybody seemed delighted ; and the i vestibule during the intermission was noisy with !the congratulations of Pike and Stra- itoscb. BAST FKAHCISCO DISPATCH.
