Si'Eincish Sort of Weather is expe rienced " about these days " as Toor Rich ard's Almanac savs. ith cord wood at eleven dollars a cord, a little more sunshin is in order. Good Selection-. The Gold Hill News favors State Superintendent Fisher an ' Uncle " Joe Trench for delegates to the Chicago Convention. It would be easy to select worse men. Xew Mrsic. Mr. Fox has sent ns cop. ies of " Coal oil Tommy " and" Champagne Charley," the two latest soncs issued by Gray of San Francisco. Our young lady readers can get copes of the same at Sir. Fox's counter. School Xotice. We understand that Mr. Lawlor will be happy to meet his patron and pupils at h:s school-room on next Mon dav, at 9 o'clock A. M. Leigh," "On Guard," ic. tc, presented to us by Mr. John G. Fox. It is issued by the American News Company and is nicely gotten up with illustrations loo.lt like a very attractive book, in fact. Eastern Fiulic.itions. Mr. John G' Fox has laid upon our table the following papers and periodicals which arrived from the East on the last steamer: Leslie's and Harper's Illustrated Weeklies ; Frank Les lie's Lady's Magazine for February ; The New York Messenger ; Merryman's Month' ly ; Jolly Joker ; New York Ledger ; Harp. r's Bazaar ; New York Tribune, and New York Day Book. Thanks. The Caiiso.m Brass Band. Dan. Madei ra, Dean Hatch, Charles Friend, George Cowing, Lyman Frisbie and James Meder hare formed themselves into a band may be said, in fact, to have succeeded the favorite old Euterpe Band ; and last night they came around to the Appeal office and gave us a serenade. Dan. Madeira is the leader ; Hatch, Friend and Cowing blow some sort of horns tubers, we guess, (but ain't a tuber a potato?, though ? horns, anyhow ; and Frisbie and Meder play the sheepskin fiddles, big and little. They make mighty good music ; and wc hope tuey will keep up their lick, for we need a band here. We are much obliged for their serenade. SAS FKASCISCO DISPATCH. From the Virginia Enterprise of yesterday. Sax Francisco, February 14. It is cur rently reported to-day that the Central Pa cific Railroad Company have finally comple ted their negotiations for the purchase of the San Francisco and San Jose Railroad, The Bulletin, in connection with the re ported purchase, says rumor had it that the Central Pacific folks had virtually deter mined on this city as the terminus of the Pacific Railroad, intending to construct from Stockton to near Warm Springs, thence to Ilavcnswood, and across the bay to San Francisco, reaching the city front somewhere on the line of Townsend street, crossing Mission bay and reaching the Pacific Mail Steamship landing. We can ascertain no other basis for this rumor than the fact that negotiations are pending w ith parties inter ested in the Southern Pacific Railroad, for the purchase of the San Jose road on the reported basis of 2,500,000 as the price, The jommenrement of an extension of 30 miles to G ilroy, which would interfere with the Southern Pacific scheme, led to these negotiations which have cot yet reached a definite result. In the case of Gilmorc vs. Mathews, in which the plaintiff asked $.30,000 for an assault and battery, the jury awarded a ver dict for $50. John F. Tope has filed a voluntary peti tion in bankruptcy. Debts, jp 1-3,000 ; assets, 10,000. A little boy named Powers, about 10 years f age, was run over yesterday on Market street by a heavy truck and had his thigh fractured very badly. The Mechanics' State Council will hold a meeting to-night with a view of getting up a grand demonstration and torchlight proces sion in commemoration of the passage of the EtgVt-liour bill. A party of scientific gentlemen went to I Lime Point to-day to witness the tests of the Giant Powder. The result of the experi ments were truly astonishing, and it is thought that the explosion of this powder is equal to nitro-glycerine. The rates of fare by the Golden City to New York on the 13th, are as follows First cabin, outside rooms, $126; inside rooms, $76 , second cabin, $45 50 ; steer age, $35 50, Advices have been received from Tomales City stating that a man named Williamson had been brutally murdered yesterday at that place, and asking to have an officer sent to arrest the murderer, Mining stocks are active and prices ad vancing. Yellow Jacket S'1,2.50; Hale & Norcross not quoted, but would command almost any price. Wold was HI) in JNew lorn lo-oar noon. Legal tenders are quiet at 71 buying and 72 selling. Government securities were quoted in New York this moraine at 111? for five- twenties and 10"i for seven-thirties. The ru mor of the purchase of the San Francisco and San Jose Railroad by the Central Pa cific Railroad Company proves to have been incorrect. The Southern Pacific Railroad Company have concluded negotiations for he purchase of the San Jose road, and the Gilroy extension is to be pushed forward for their account. II. S. MASON. Ul'FF.
