THE DAILY APPEAL
- Shootiso bt Boys. Mr. M. Y. Stewart, the proprietor of the Carson Race Course informs us that on Saturday, while his boy wh at work on the Course he came near be ing shot by pistol bullets which were flying around altogether too promiscuously. I etms that some boys, having procured a revolver and some powder and lead and a bullet mold, bad built a fire back of Charley Bain's house, and were having a regular spree, " running " bullets and shooting at a mark on the buard fence of the race track. Of course these shuts were not stopped by the fence, but went whizzing along, greatly to the peril of anybody on the track. Stew art very properly took the pistol away from the boys ; and he wants us to inform the owner of the same that he can have it upon application to him and proving property. RfSAWAT. A couple of Chinamrn driv ing two horses in a bu&rgy up from China town to Charley Smith's stable, yesterday afternoon, were very much astounded to find themselves, all of a sadden, left fitting in their vehicle without a horse before them. A sndden jounce hud unshipped the bug?y j from the king-phi, and the horses, finding . themselves free broke fur hfme. No j laTC damage done. OtR Mail. The Postmaster of this place received a note from the Washoe City Pott- office last Monday asking hy the Crescent I of last week was not furthcoming. " e un derstand that th Crescents do not generally reach Washoe until the Monday or Tuesday after public at i n. As we andersur.d it Wells, Fare & Co. takes the mail from this omee to !la:lrj, thtn Dyer carries it through to Wahce and Car son : now the matter lavs between the dri vers of Wells, F-inro & Co.'s coaches. Iluf faker and Dver. If the drivers do not leave the mails at Huff" s they otiijht to han ; if they do and Huifd jc not give them to Dyer then Hutf ousht and shall be crucified. If Dyer's driver does not iret the mail from Hulf then he oucht to be jtuillotined. We strongly suspect the trouble is with the first stage. The mail is thrown in the bo.it, ba- f aire is piled abote it, when the stage reaches lutfaker's it is nut convenient to dig out the paper mail from under a ton of baggage, and so the Crescent is eanied to Virginia and re turned next day and gets to W'ahoe some time during the following week. If the Cres cent was an ordinary journal like the Gold Hill News, for instance, it would not mat ter o much, as it is our subscribers in Washoe miss it as they would a benediction. lieno Crescent, 3d. At present there is a fierce controversy in London newspapers about a proposal to sur render the rock fortress of Gibralter to the Spanish Government. Admiral Grey, who has served in the Mediterranean, and was a Ird of the Admirality from 1801 to 1806, contends that justice, as well as policy, de mand that Gibralter shall be restored to Spain, and that if England wan's a coaling depot and a Mediterranean seaport, she has only to seize upon Ccssta, on the African ecist, nuu niike a new Gibralter there minus the rock. The fact is, Gibralter is so situated as to commitnd the straits which bears its name, and. to a great commercial country like England, this was a great object when England was addicted to mari time wars, and appeared to look on the Med iterranean as a sort of British Lake upon a large scale. The est of making it the best fortified place in the world rws been im anense, and the expense of maintaining a targe g-rrison there has long been felt by the British treasury. It is very much doubted bow whether, nith the modern appliances of warfare, Gibralter could ttand a three KiuathV siege, and this is one of the seasens j;iven for restoring it to Spain. If this sur render should be made without any great hiss of prestige, we shall begin to think that ii is yet on the cards for England to restore Ireland to theliisb, without the continual dread of what Mrs. Grundy may say. If this restoration principle be carried out, F.ngland w ill have a good deal to da all over the globe. If the " f 'ol-killer' should throw his net in San Francisco to-day, he would ca'eh a big haul before the sun eoea down Times. If the Times appears to-day, that will be ample evidence that the " fool-killer" did not throw his net in San Francisco yester dayCart. 4 Hello ! Hello !
