ing reflection to a rich man to think that when
he in dead and gone, hi* children and other
heirs will engage in an immense squabble over
the money that he has accumulated thr.sigh a
life-time of toil and trouble. But such is gen
erallv the case. Arrange it as you may, aud
yet tiiere is always something that disturb*
Ihe quiet that death should give the man who
is unfortunate enough to die rich. We nie*
lioned last week the death of Mr. Jamrs
Black, of Marin county, who died leaving a
large fortune behind hitn. He left a will, aal
in that will he disinherited his daughter?he
only child?a Mrs. Dr. Burdell, who ineumd
her father's ?lis^Waenre by marrying the man
6he loved. After the solemn rights had K>tu
performed, on Monday of last week, the will
was brought forth and read and the daughter
being only remembered in the sum of a i?altry
dime, getting possession of the document, ins
moment of di"?ppointzn?nt and rage, destroyed
it with her hands. For that oflVnse the griinl
{ury af Marin county found a true bill again4
ter and 6he stands indicted of the crime. Ani
thus that which had been heaped together fez
good and for honor turns to the misery and
unhappiness of an only child. Romance
sometimes tells of incidents of this character,
but never before in real life have we heard of
n parallel case to this. Truly, "truth is oft
times stranger than fiction."?Pttaliuna Joui

ts na Las a citizen named Miss Given Evarn,
who, as may readily be inferred from h<r
n?ne, is by birth n Welsh woman. About a
month ago she entered the United States Dis
trict Court in Montana, and asked to have a
naturalization certificate made out for her.
The pasted functionary settled his spectacles
on his nose, examined the applicant with sur
prise, and then plunged into United States
statutes, in which he fonnd no legal reason
why a woman should not be duly naturalized,
and so Miss Evans received her papers, with
which she boldly went to the Land Office of
the Territory. There she asked a clerk to
make out her declaratory statement to pre
empt one hundred and sixty acres of land, j
The gentleman, like the other, was some* hat .
astonished by her request, but, examining au
thorities, he found no reason to rettl the a| -
plicaut. and her certificate was duly filed as
No. 1,000. The energetic lady went to work
on her newly acquired land, and bailt a house
and set about to improve her farm, fencing
ity and otherwise showing that, having it, she
intended to keep it. She now has a cow, a
yoke of oxen, and all the usual farming tools
generally used by pioneers, ller land is in
l?eer Lodge valley! and some day the Jiorth
srn Tarific Railroad will run close to it, mak
ing it quite a little fortune.
Sncrnx.?A young man be the name of
Frank Maxwell, a native of Jvew York, where
he was bound, committed suicide yesterday
on a Central Pacific freight train, just this
side of Kelton. bv shooting himself through
the heart. The (>ody was brought to this city
and an inqnest held yesterday evening. One
hundred and sixtv dollars in coin was found
on his person, fie was well dressed and ap
parently in the best of spirits ten minutes
previous to committing the awful deed. In
his note book, which he was seen to write in
just before he suicided, was found the follow
ing terrible adieu to the world: "I die like a
dog. In ten minutes I shall be a dead man,
and'in ten minutes more shall be in hell."
What induced the young man to thus reck
lessly end so apparently brilliant a career is
more than we can divine.?1'orinw KrporUr,
