EVBKKA rORMLIDHEO Or» t'UL I.EITEB, Following is the official letter of Su perintendent Donnelly to the San Francisco office of the company, for warded on Saturday last: Work at the mine baa continued with the usual progress sod mosten couiaging results. The ore b-nlies, from top to bottom, are all looking well, and yielding tiisir usual quota of ore. The ore seam recently discov ered on the eighth level, and inen lionet! in a previous letter, has devel oped Into a body or very good ore, and is looking first rate, with good pros pectsof turning out to he a large de posit, though, at this writing, it is impossible to form any adequate idea ol its dimensions, as sufficient work has not been done to determine a cor reet theory of it. This body of ore lies shout midway of the mine, and was found in a drilt running north from the main drilt when in a distance of luo reel. This portion of the none is en tirely unexplored, and from the recent developments on Ibe eighth level, would indicate that with in mu large area of ground u to tie found a belt or or© cltanml, containing unlimited resource-extend ing up and down an unknown dis tance. In all probability we are on the eve of making important develop menu that will inaieually enhance the v alue of the mine, and place it in the highest rank of the productive mines on ilie ('oast. Judging this theory to be correct. I have signed drifts from tile tilth and seventh levels, running north, to explore the ground above th© ore body on the eighth level. «nd have alau started a drill from the ninth level, running m ths same general course, to determine w hetlier this ore body may not be found extending below. There has been extracted and deliv ©red at tile furnace this week some 1, oOO tons of t,re. ol good grade and quality for smelling purposes. The furnaces continue to run well, and have reduced 1.4H8 toils of ore, yielding 334 tons of bullion. Kapemllturea on Mine*. The annua! expenditure on mines must he continued until patents have Issued therefor. That is to say, tha’ the mere application for a patent will not suffice to Olivia's the necessity of the usual assessment work, which should lie k"|>* up right along until the Government patent has been is sued to the applicant. Following is a recent ruling of the Commissioner of the General Land Cilice on this point: Dep’t. of the Interior, ) General Land Office, l Washington. I>. C„ Nov. 13, 1877 j T. O. Hailey. E-q., Salt Lake City, Utah—Sir: Referring to ynurrecent in quiry, 1 have to state that section 2.321 ot th« revised statutes of the United States requires ati annual expenditure upon each mining claim until a patent has been issued therefor. Very re spectlully your oh silent servant, J. A. Williamson, Coui'r, Kew I'ateiil*. We learn from an authentic source that the terms of settlement of the liti gation regarding the title to the Day mine, was the paymeiit by the com pany to the plaintiff the sum of $10,000 in gold coin, each party paying their own witnesses. The suit was for one third of the mine. The interest in volved wss worth vastly more money, but the delay and uncertainty of all litigation being duly cousidered, it was thought best to settle. ♦ Ben Tasker's Ghost.
