The telegraph the other day mentioned a banquet given to John McCullough by distinguished gentlemen ill Washington. The Sacramento Bee, commenting on the occurrence, gets off in bad taste os follows ; John McCollongh always manages to be wined and dined wherever he goes, and to have bis name kept More tho public eye. On Saturday night a banquet was tendered him at Washington. Senator Maine, Jus tice Miller and others were present. The explanation is tube found in bis nickname, " Genial John.” All tho extravagant flat tery of friends and the puffs of papers havs not helped him in the slightest in tho pub lic admiration, and his starring trips are growing less and less profitable. Pen and ink cannot make a tragedian. Brother Bogart, of the Stock Report, got* back at the Bee, happily, a* follows : •' And now we should like to know how it came that such meu as Sherman, and hi* brother the General, and Associate Justice Miller, and Senator Blaine, men occupying the highest positions in the llvpublic, could be roped into a midnight carousal ar ranged for no other purpose than to adver tise a cheap jack showman. The journal* tell ua the festivities lasted until daylight, and furnish details of some ridiculously emotional goings on listween Senator Maine and Congressman Blackburn. We wonld like to know who arranged this aurpriaiug feast, who paid for it, and above all what the Shrrmaus and Millers and Blainea wore thinking of when they allowed themselves to l>e roped into such a pinch beck per formance. Cabinet officers, Justices of the Supreme Court and Senators as clacquer, for an actor. Ye Gods, what are wo com ing to ? IsIPHTIIEBIA IX KI’ROPC. Diphtheria is r«i>ortrd in our dispatches iH prevalent in Europe, and details appear in English journals of the illneas of nearly the whole family of the Grand Duke of Hesse, Whose wife is Princess Alice, daugh ter of Qmcu Victoria. The Grand Duke himaelt, his son and four of his five daugh ter* were all afflicted with the disease, and the young' at child. Mary, four years old next May, died of it. The death of Princess Alice has been announced. In printing these facts, slid enlarging upon the preva lence of diphtheria and its obscure char acter, the Loudon Times says that early in tbs present year it manifested itself as an epidemic of considerable severity in the nortli of London, leading to the formation of a committee tu investigate the general sanitary condition of that locality, one of the discoveries being that nearly all tho bouses in the district affected were open to tbs invasion of sewer gas. —- • • • — ' »■■■ — There is much talk in the press of the opposition to the effect that Senator Thur man, in the lato canvass in Ohio, changed (rout on the finance question. Ho did nothing of the kind. He denonneed the inflation heresy, and contended that hard money is, aad should he, the money uf the country. What ho did say was that the National banks should be abolished and the Government issue its notes direct. There is no sane man who will attempt to con trovert tho correctness of the Senator's views on this question. -— — The London Court Journal asks: "What will be thuuglil of the Uuitod States ship ping plum pudding to England, jiotatocs tu Ireland, oatmeal to Scotland, toy* to Nuremberg, and lager beer to Germany? Yet such are the facts, and they are no more aatonishing than tho now thrice-told tale of the regular and profitable sale of American cotton goods in Manchester, and American cutlery and hardware in Birm ingham.”' '- * • • - —.. Transatlantic travel baa practically closed •for 1878, after a prosperous season. While the different lines have had ueithor the passengers nor freight they carried previous to tho pauiu of 1873, the Paris Exhibition increased the homeward bound cabin paasengers from 23,473 in 1877 to 21,837, and heavier immigration pushed up the steerage arrivals from 36,300 to 70,800. -- « *•-■■ — - Bon idea of the grain producing capac ity of the Western States cau bo formed from the fact that thu Chicago elevators now contain 6,288,942 bushels Of this amouut 4,064,299 bushels are wheat, 592, 293 corn. 229,265 .oats, 139,116 rye, and 1,263,967 barley. But jest as he got dun shafn the feller, and was gettin ready to put them tilings onto him. cordin to the niemmy randem, a man walked in and took the feller by the ear, and he ted to the barber, the man did : “ This feller's got lo go now, cos ho is a escape.
