In Danuetta * P“'« hae taken pooeeenoa of the people on account of the comerona s-.il.. Strict measure* hare been taken to localise the plague aa ranch aa possible to prcTeat iU spread to other districts. So far ia iu history this diead disease has haflisd aU scientific effort* to discover its cause. The most pUnsible hypothesis is that suggested by Prof. Pettenkofer of I hi notch—that it is elaborated ia poctms I fallow soils; which agrees well with the fact that most of the great cholera epidemics hare originated, aad the has become endemic in the delta of the Ganges. Bat its origin in ohoenre and little a known of the law of its geo graphical extension, except that it follows the great highways of commerce. Little was known of this dreaded visitation ptot to 1317, when it made its appear ■see at Jemoee, in India, whence it spread over a great part of Asia, sweep ing off the population by millions. In 1823 it had reached Astrakhan in its westward march, and daring the years 1828-29 it ravaged large areas in Rossis. Different ports of Earope were subjected to this scourge in 1832, sad at mbeeqweat periods it broke out st intervals. Ita first appearance in Aments wss st Que bec ia 1832, on the 1st of Jane, and 20 days later it broke oat ia Xew York, traveling rapidly inland from these points and causing everywhere the utmost coo atemataoo. Probably as auury of its vic tims died from sheer fright as from the flitritr itself. Other visitationsfollowed ia 1834, 1349, 1830 and 1354, the terri ble ravages of which, especially among immigrants, will long be remembered. ; The cholera epidemic of 1854 wag the lsat to which this continent has been heavily subjected. and other European countries suffered heavily from the pesti lence about the same trine. Some eight or nine years since, however, cholera pre vailed to some extent ia the Mississippi Valley, and since then sporadic cases have now «—<t then occurred. There ia an impulse to sanitary reform, especially in the matter of drainage, and the im munity from the dreaded epidemic of late years is largely attributable to the advances made ia this n?-.*ct. It re* to be seen whether the increased resources of medical science and the greater ealigbtenmenlof ’Governments cm such questions which now prevail will avail to keep the cholera from Egypt ex tending into the adjoining Ecrojean countries. Toe fact that it has broken out so early in the Summer is an addi tional reason for using extraordinary efforts to arrest ita westward progress. TBuT THE HLD MAS OtT. Why should he not desire a second term or cherish n** ambition to become for the first time his party’s candidate and the people's choice for the great office ? It ia safe to sesame that ho will make efforts to secure the nomination if, in his opin ion, there are reasonable chances of success. _ •CB WATT. This little story is from the Burling ton Hawkeye, Mr. Hatton's Iowa news paper: “In 4,000 years,” says Prof. Paige, without stating who told him, ‘an other glacial epoch will destroy the world,’ and it ia urged that an ark be built to save a few representative fami lies of this country. Well, we shan’t get excited. If the ark is built at all the Government will probably build it, and in that case we would prefer a pine slab and the wide channaa of the open •ea.” _ BOTH. A Canada Court haa decided that di vorces granted in the United States are not valid in Canada. Four vessels cleared from Charles ton, ,8. C., on Tuesday laden with tur pentine and rosin for Europe. It is a fact, however paradoxical it may seem, that the political pot can’t be made to boil in very hot weather. The Atlanta Constitution says: "The indications are that the Democrats mean to take tune hy the forelock inatead of the hind leg as heretofore.” The fact that the Republican news papers have elected a Speaker will not prevent the Democrat* from going through the motions of an election as I n matter of form. The protectionists understand that we moat either have a great redaction of duties, or we shall soon have n large surplus of revenues. Inatead of pro posing catting down taxes they bring oat plana for diatribe ting the anrplus among the States. Gen. Weaver, who is strongly sus pected of running the Greenback party in the interest of Republicans, sad who is believed to have been remunerated from the Hobbell-Dorsey sack in the last nstioasl campaign, is ia the harness again, being nominated by the Greea beckers for Governor of Iowa.
