Echoes from Fi.oddkx-Fiei.d. ? The South is full of contention, bereavement, and lamentation. Want of provisions, military failure, diplomatic disaster in Europe, and the proposed exchange of black prisoners for white, are causes of this angry feeling, which operates upon the coarse and vindictive agents who are trusted with the charge of Union prison ers. In this conflict of violent passions, the name of General Lee is rapidly sinking ?and that of Geueral Bragg is obviously on the wane. The people fill the air with their lamentations at the loss of some of their generals, particularly of General Jackson, to whose death they attribute most of their reverses on the battle-field, and the change now perceptible in the fortunes of the South. A characteristic story of the President is narrated in a letter from Washington. When the telegram from Cumberland Gap reached Mr. Lincoln that "firing was heard in the direction of Knoxville," he remarked that hu was '? Glad of it." Some present, who had the perils of Burnside's position uppermost in his mind, could not see tchy Mr. Lincoln should be "glad of it," and so expressed himself. "Why, you sec," rcspouded the President, "it reminds me of Mistress Sally Ward, a neighbor of mine, who had a very large family. Occa I sionally, one of her numerous progeny i would be heard crying in some out-of-the way place, upon which Mistress Sallie would exclaim : "There's one of my chil dren that isn't dead yet.' " ? Boston Tram - eript. The Capitol at Washington will proba bly be, when completed, the finest build ing of the Corinthian order of architec ture in the world. It stands 90 feet above the low tide of the Potomac. Its com manding position was determined by Washington. It is surrounded by a beautiful park of 35 acres, adorned by a great variety of shade trees. The entire length of the building is 751 feet 4 inches. Length of wings, including steps, 324 feet; width of wings, 128 feet 8 inches; width of central part, 325 feet 4 inches ; area of ground covered, 153,112 square feet, or 625 feet more than three acres and a half ; height of dome above basement floor, 264 feet. Didn't Want it Filed. ? A French man had a claim against the county, and appeared before the Board of Commission ers. lie was told that the summary settle ment demanded could not be made ; that he must hand in his bill to be filed by the Clerk. He grew irate : 'Non, by gar ! you too much file him several time now : what you call ? cut him down ? Sac-r-r-r-e clam ! Xon, par bleu ! no want him file down one cent !' And he would not hear anything, until the Board went into com mittee of the whole to consider the merits of his demand. ? Humboldt Reg'uter. What will paralyze small minds, may incite larger ones, as the breath which ex tinguishes the candle will kindle and strengthen the flame upon the hearth stone. Am Irishman being asked by a friend, " Has your sister got a son or a daugh ter ?" answered, " Upon my sowl, I don't know whether I'm an uncle or an aunt." "What are you looking after, my daughter ?" said an old gentleman at a Christmas party. " Looking after a son in-law for you, father," was the reply. Tjtb Richmond people say Confederate currency has so depreciated that yon take your money in the basket, and carry youi beef in the pocket book. JjUif-' ? ? Deafli on the Battle Field. Thus writes an officer fighting in Spain under the Duke of Wellington : Habit gradually hardens us to such seen e?, and death, far from creating serious reflections, is often laughed to scorn. Un the evident approach of a general action, we notify its probability to each other by unreflecting remarks, such as " there will be more hats than heads before to-morrow night and none of us, even during the action, conduct ourselves with the proper proportion of sober sadness which I have no doubt you excellent people in England suppose natural, and perhaps think neces sary, in an affair of life and death. I have heard some refy tree jokes escape under fire; and as hearty burst of laugh ter ot seeing a beau of an officer covered with dirt or dust, from the splash or blow of a cannon boll striking near him as would take place at any absurd accident *' in common life. On our advance to Others, when opposite Sauveterre, waiting for orders, and hardly ont of cannon shot of the enemy, on the other side the Gave, the officers of the Third Division amused themselves by leap-frog and other romp ing boyish gomes. I recollect at Fucntes de Honor being goose-quilled on the superficial skin, if not thrilled to the inmost soul, by an offi cer of the Adjutant General's department, well known for his fun, depicting to me, in the following words, the state some of us might possibly be in within the course of a few hours. The truthfulness of the description made it very disagreeable, par ticularly as, at the moment, the balls from the skirmishers (in evidence of what was coming) were already flying over our heads. " You will be astonished," he said, " to find yourself overturned by a sharp blow on the breast, and on evincing an inclination to rise, being convinccd, by the total diminution of your strength, that some very unpleasant accident has hap pened to you. Tims satisfied as to your incapacity of movement, you lie quietly on the ground, with certain very unpleas ant forebodings in your mind, till one of your friends brings you a surgeon, who, opening your coot, finds you ore shot through the lungs, and to satisfy himself (not you) says, 1 Snit, sir, spit.' In the attempt your mouth fills with blood ? what your medical friend (no longer, alas, your adviser) wishes to ascertain ? who, putting a bit of lint on the wound, shrugs up his shoulders, and leaves you to suffo cate, while he goes to congratulate your juniors on their promotion." Unmasking. The Richmond Whig says that it really looks as if the South might be overrun. On another day it declares that the rebels can only retrieve their misfortunes by im itating the methods adopted by the Yan kees in retrieving theirs ; and it calls for a truly great General and a great army to be put in the path of General Grant in three weeks. It says again that the rebels would be cowards if they should even contemplate the possibility of yielding to a foe so contemptible, so cruel, so loathed and abhorred as the Yankees ; and if they are the race they have believed themselves to be they will not give way to despon dency, but nerve -themselves for a fiercer struggle and more costly sacrifices. In fact, they will die in the last ditch. This strain of remark is a fit accompa niment to the melanchollv Message of Davis. It is the unmusical whistling of boys in the grave- yard, announcing not their couragc but their foreboding. In these articles, as in the speeches of Davis, there is, on the part of the rebels, the same travesty of noble sentiment and heroic re solve which, in the case of a really op pressed and suffering people striking for relief are solemn and touching, but which arc merely ludicrous and contemptible in the mouths of men who deliberetely un dertake a bloody revolution for no other purpose than the perpetuity of injustice. The British aristocracy has tried hard to depict these rebellious American citi zens as worthy of sympathy, like the Poles or the Greeks, Briash statesmen labored to paint them as a small band of noble gentlemen straggling for their free dom and rights with a vulgar and demo cratic tyranny. This wretched effort has also failed. All the masks begin to fall. The ghastly facts are appearing. The conspiracy of slaveholders is at last seen to be as base and inhuman as that of St. Bartholomew's Day against the Hugunots. That too was loudly commended. Mure tus called it a great victory of the true faith. And if slavery had prevailed in this contest, as Catholicism did in France, the aristocracy, which fears popular rights, would nave hailed it, in the spirit of Mu retus, as a signal of triumph of the true | faith. ? Ilarperi Weekly. Mas S a ha it Smith's Kevebib. ? "Alt diaaimmulation it disloyalty to loce." I've thought so before, said Mrs. Smith, but now I hioic it, became I read it in a news paper. These editors beat the D? utch for understanding human nature, (all ex cept female nature) there they are decided ly benighted. However, it isn't my inte rest to throw any light on that subject ; it is an interesting study that I shan't inter fere with. But this is a digression. As I was saying, "dissimulation is disloyalty to love." Didn't Mr. Smith tell me, when he asked me, on his kness, to make him the happiest of men, that I was the only daughter of Eve he ever fancied; and didn't I, before the honeymoon was over, And in his old bachelor trunk locks of hair of every color the sun ever shone up on > And doesn't it do me good to put my matrimonial foot on the cricket that I stuffed with them ? Certainly? I only wish I had their entire scalps ! Well ? didn't he come home one Sunday, with a face as long as an orthodox steeple, and give me "the text and heads of the dis course," when he had been off rolling nine-pins all the morning ? And didn't I always know, when he kissed me, or gave me a twenty dollar bill, (which was much more acceptable !) that it was the premoni tory symptom of a desperate flirtation with somebody ? And wasn't I sure, when that buff vest, and blue coat with bright brass buttons, went on, that there was immense execution to be done some where on forbidden ground? Well ? "Life is short;" so is Mr. Smith. No help for either, that I know of ! I'm too busy, amusing mysel? to attend to his lit tle derelictions. If there's anything that I ignore it is curiosity. It is so decidedly .a masculine failing that I scorn to be guil ty of it ! Faxxy Ferx. Gf.s. Connor, ? In his report of the war operations of the post year. Gcu.
