THE EVENING NEWS.
Gat.** a and Vicinity. ? The town
bearing the above name is situated in
Washde county, about three miles north
west of Washoe City, at the foot of Mount
Kose. < ialcna deserves special notice for
its importance in manufacturing a large
jhare of the lumber used in this vicinity,
both in mines and for building purposes.
Quite a village has been built within the
past few years, and the actual population
at this time is about a thousand souls.
Around the town, and upon the range of
mountains north and east, pine timber
i;rows in profusion, and has been cut in
immense quantities and manufactured at
at the numerous sawmills that have been
built to supply the demand, and of which
the following is a . li>t : Alford's mill is
situated close to the town, is substantially
built, and uses water as a motive power,
driving a double saw, that daily cuts
about 12.000 feet of lumber. Above this
s located the mill of Rhodes, Belden it
i o.. driven by a steam engine of about
;:o-horse power, and with a double saw,
:< capable of turning out about 18,000 feet
lumber per day. South of the town,
fnnce, Brown & Co. have a very fine mill,
also driven by steam power, and of about
? he same capacity, which is known as the
Lower Mill. The same firm have another
mill, of the same make and capacity, situ
ated farther up the canon, and known as ,
r he Upper Mill. Both mills arc capable
of cutting about 30,000 feet of lumber
daily. East of the lower mill is located
Wilson's mill, which is one of the best in
the vicinity. The machinery is all of a
juperior make ; the motive power, consist
ing of an overshot wheel fifty feet in diam
eter. with large buckets that hold so large
a quantity of water that the weight pro
duces immense momentum, driving with
velocity a double saw that is capable of
cutting 20.000 feet of lumber per day.
Next comes the Badger mill, and next
Chapin's mill, both of about the same ca
pacity, each turning out 10,000 feet of
lumber every twjnty-four hours.' Near
the town Fowler Co. have a sash, door
and blind manufactory, that produces a
large quantity of manufactured material
every vear. ferrons fc nooinson
have also in successful operation a steam
shingle and clapboard machine of an im
proved pattern, that furnishes a large
quantity of that article yearly. Above
Galena." in White's Cannon, is situated
Loo mis" saw mill, which derives its motive ,
power from an over-shot water wheel, and |
daily turns out about 10.000 feet of lum
ber." In Thomas' Cannon, two saw mills
are located, one owned by Mr. Caldwell j
and the other by Mr. Simms, both sub- i
nantiallv built, and turning out about j
>.i (too feet of lumber per day. lhe above
fist comprises all of the mills we believe, ,
and as some of these mills are constantly
m repair, the gross, amount of lumber
dressed and undressed, will averageabout
100.000 feet per day, or about 3t>.o00,000
feet per vear. This* lumber is worth on
the ground, on an average. $2f> per thou- j
<ind feet, and amounts to the enormous ,
sum of ?912,500 per year tor saw null ;
products only. It is estimated that the
past season at least 50.0(H) cords of wood ,
have been cut. and hundreds of thousands |
of feet of lumber hewn for shafu and in
c lines, besides a vast number of round
poles, cut and drawn away, the w hole
.umber business constituting a source of
vast revenue to the inhabitants, and being
of incalculable importance ,to the interests
of the people of Storey county. Another
branch of labor that is becoming both
profitable and necessary, is the cultivation
of mountain ranches, ot which a larg
number are in successful operation. Dur
ing the past season a large amount of
vegetable productions have been grown on
these raacLs, and of a quality supenor to
?ho?e grown in California, and having the
Advantage of being brought fresher to the
?narket. The following gentlemen are the
owners of the principal ranches: Wm.
\lford, J. Burschbach. L. Lords, K
Kords, A. J- Hatch and Joseph btemhart.
Preparations for a more successful culti
vation are being made. and it is expected
that the value of the ranch products for
the next vear will amount to at least
5100,000, "making an important itenj in
the domestic economy of Galenians.
Mining in Galena? In the year 1860, m.
Alford located a. ledge under
the \lford G. & S>- NNork "t
vigorously prosecuted, and a tunnel
driven 500 feet in length, and a o
?? Galena ore " struck 10 feet in thickness,
bat no known proceeds "f worl^g the
ore was attained, although work has
been prosecuted intermittently ever since ,
SHU M*- Taylor, of Storey
countv, has invested in the claim and is
^ving it his attention. He has P"1 a
force of 20 men at work and about thirty
SETof ore are being taken out daUv In
o-der to reduce the ore, Mr. Taj lor has
recently erected a large building for smelt
?." the main feature of which u> the
chfmnev stack. It being very "pensive
to build a stack of the requisite beight to
obtain sufficient draft to produce the in
tense heat necessary to fuse the ore, na
ture was called on to aid the enterprise,
and the .tack built up the steep biHjude
rpnuiied distance, and a powerful
draft thus obtained the furnace ls just
completed, and smelting will_ be com
menced forthwith-the " pigs will be
sent to England for further proccss, as a
large quantity of precious ore is supposed
fo be contained in the base metal. If
successful. thU mine will prove to be of
immense value, as unlimited
?re are attainable. Not only do the peo
ple of Galena labor at all the branches of
industry, but a Lyceum h?s bee"^inf
operation, including in its ranks many of
the prominent people of the ti ?wn" ..
the first of January, an entertainment wdl
be given of a dramatic character, to be
succeeded bv a ball, everybody is to be
invited, and 'a gay time may be expected.
But better than all. Galena is loyal to the
core Vt the last election, Lincoln received
oyy votes and McClellan 20 votes, or in
the proportion of 10 loyal men to one
traitor, Wit was not a very surprising
sevson for politics at that, for the people
claim that they could have much better if
necessary.
District Court ? Hie District Court
has commenced its first session this after
noon, with our three newly. elected Judges
presiding. This morning. Col. Lucien
Hermann administered the oath of office to
the Bench ? neither of- whom had a cent
to pay the fees of the Magistrate. If the
judicial ermine should be tarnished, every
broken man in the State could sympa
thize. But, seriously, we hail the inaugu
ration of our new judiciary with pleasure,
for we believe them to be " good men and
true," and we expect to herald a new
epoch in the history of Nevada jurispru
dence.
Ox the Trail ? For the past week the
favorite resort of amateurs of the game of
billiards, the Niagara Saloon, North B
street, Virginia, has been closed for re
pairs ? but this evening the same will be
thrown open to the public, its new dress
being as " smart and spruce" as a Yankee
school-marm's. The best billiard tables
on the coast are to be found at the Niag
ara, and if Amos Dennis don't know how
to " mix things " in a palatable manner,
then we are no judge. Pat Lynch runs
the machine, and will be glad tn see his
legion friends this evening.
Another Cave.? The bank of earth at
the north side of Drs. Pinkerton Sc Tuck
er's office caved in this morning, crushing
in the side of the building back of the
consulting room, and badly staving the
back part of the establishment.
The Meeting on Saturdxt Night. ?
Pursuant to the published notice there
was a meeting of citizens at the Court
House, in Virginia, to consider and act
upon the condition of the county affairs.
The proceedings, as we leam from yester
day's Union, were as follows : On motion,
F. L. Aud was called to the chair, and
Wm. M. Gillespie appointed Secretary.
Mr. Olagett stated briefly the object of the
meeting, and said that it was necessary to
know the actual financial condition of the
county and cities before any bill could be
introduced into the Legislature looking to
ward relief by consolidation. He then
suggested that three committees be ap
pointed ? one on the finances of the county,
one on municipal affairs, and one on sala
ries and fees of officers. A. B. Paul ap
proved the appointment of the commit
tees, and made a motion to that effect.
He stated that the Trustees of Gold Hill
intended to make, in a few days, a full re
port of the indebtedness and resources of
that city. Mr. Frizell said that the in
debtedness of Goid Hill was $39,000 ?
and that it was thought property there
was taxed to an amount sufficient to pay
the ordinary expenses of the municipal
government and $10,000 over. During
the formation of the committee, Mr. Geo.
F. Jones stated that the financial affairs of
Virginia were in such a deplorable condi
tion that it would require long and patient
investigation to arrive at any satisfactory
result. The Chairman, with the sugges
tion of the meeting, then appointed the
committee, as follows : County at large ?
f. J. Hillver, Lloyd Friz ell, A. B. Paul,
Jno. A. Pax ton. On Municipal Affairs
? F. A. Tritle, I. L. Requa, G. F. Jones,
J. M. Walker. On Salaries and Fees ? I.
C. Bateman, Dennis Driscoll, N. W. Win
ton, W. F. Myer. Mr. Paul moved that
the reports be made out in writing, and
presented at an adjourned meeting, to lie i
held next Saturday at the same time and
place. On motion of Mr. Hillyer, all
county and municipal officers were re
quested to afford the committees every
facility in the discharge of their duties.
On motion, the meeting adjourned till
next Saturday, at half-past six o'clock.
Cavb ok a Wall ? Narrow Escape
from Death. ? This morning, about four
o'clock, the east wall of the Chollar Com
pany's claim fell to the east, and upon the
hoisting and other buildings of the Potosi
nine. The following are the facts :
Through the water soaking in at the top
the wall, which was supposed to be <3f the
most desirable built, became loosened, and
this morning without any warning began
to fall in, not with a tremendous crash,
but gradually, about 75 feet in length of
the same caving. At a distance of twelve
feet from the foot of the wall was the
hoisting building and machinery of the
Potosi company, and against the west side
of which came the enormous weight of
the wall. Striking the building it threw
the same forcibly to the east, wrenching
the building in twain and cracking huge
16 inch timbers like the brittle stick. The
northern portion of the building is com
pletely shattered, and the " shears," so
designated, are crushed and rendered use
less. One of the double engines is par
tially covered by rocks and dirt, and the
boiler and smoke stack badly smashed.
As the floor of the building was not
moved, the other engine, and the reels and
braking works, are uninjured. North of
the main building was situated a sort of
out -house, which was stove completely to
atoms. East of and adjoining this build
ing was the house in which lived the
Foreman of the mine, Wm. Rodham.
Himself, wife and child were in bed at the
time, and some of the heavy timbers flew
striking the side and roof of his house,
crushing it in like an egg-shell, the falling
timbers striking each side of his bed,
breaking the same, and forcing parts of
the wood through the floor into the earth.
Miraculous as it may appear, neither Mr.
Rodham, his wife or child, were in any
degree injured, although the broken tim
bers were thick around them, and in no ,
other portion of the house would it have
been possible for the bed to have been
placed without its being crushed and the
occupants instantly killed. One of the
engineers, whose bed was placed between
the engine and the fallen wall, was called
up about ten minutes before the cave oc
curred, thus escaping a horrible death, the
place where he slept being covered with
hundreds of tons of stones and earth. A
large corps of workmen are engaged in
clearing away the ruins and making prep
arations to get at work, while crowds of
spectators arc passing to and from the
place. The balance of the wall looks
rather unsafe, being cracked in many
places. The amount of damages cannot
fall much short of $5,000. The catas
trophe was sudden and not to be guarded
against, and it is a wonderful fact that no
lives were lost.
