:iKevenii* ALF. i i Uliw rr«»rU«f. EVENING NEWS. GOLD KILL, i IHUMD1T. JTJLT 3. 1174 THE IOWA KtrriUMX COSTS*. | TIOM. The Iowa State Repnbllcsn Conrrn Uon met at Des Moines yesterday, with • very largo attendance. Nominations were made (or the following officers: Secretary of State, Treasurer. Auditor, Register of State Land Office. Attorney General and Reporter of the Supreme Court. The platform adopted reaffirms the financial policy announced by the party in the National Contention* of 1868 and 1872; furors free banking; re affirms the declaration of the Bepubli-1 can platform in 1872 in faTor of pay ment by the Government of all ita obli gations in the world's currency, to wit, specie; affirms the constitutional power and duty of Congress to regulate inter nal State railway commerce; declares it the right and duty of the State to regu late railroads, and to enforce the rail road law of Iowa until it is superseded by other legislation, or declared unconstitutional by proper tri bunals; affirms the «|ual rights of all men; declares that the Re publican party has kept all its pledge* regarding economy and retrenchment; favors a constitutional amendment pro viding for the election of the PretiiJent and Viae President by a direct vote of the people; demands a modification of the patent laws in the interest of con sumers; demands that only honest and ca|>able men shall bo elected or appoint ed to office, and recoruiuend* the inves tigation and punUhmcut of official cor ruption. The last plank of the plat form favors the submission to the peo ple of an amendment to the State Con stitution allowing women to vote. Thin platform in certainly broad < u ough to cover every reform demanded by tlia people. The la*t two reaolution* takn uliiimd ground. While some journal*, villi more zeal for party sue cee* than for good government, Lave deprecated tli" investigations, which, commencing with Credit Mobilier, have been steadily urged by the people anil a large |<ortion of the press until the eiul of tho Maaton jn*t •xpiml, the Republicans of Iowa em phatically record their approval and urge the continuance of thine inquests. Thin fact in not only creditable to the member* ok that convention but in structive. It shows that among the masses of Republicans there ia dinting an iutenso desire for au upright, capable and honest government: that they are eamrat for Republican xucces* only no far on it ahull secure thia wished for re sult; that they will uot tolerate corrupt officials; but, ou the contrary, demand that all charge* shall lu investigate! and the guilty offender* be unloaded. It i* thi* reuibnr** to correct wrong, thi* lib eral public acntinient, that uw* party only a* a mean* to secure the l*-*t wel fare of tho citizen, which i* at once characteristic of the llepnblican jtirtj and it* *tronge*t guarantee for eou tinuaucv in |x>wcr. The Iowa Repub licans ore not too rudicid in thi* |uutic ul.ir. They speak the aentimeuta of uitie tentha of thoac who have aince Iwil) united to secure free, ju.it and honeat goveminent to the whole American |*\> ple. If, aa doubtleaa i* true, corrupt official* worm their way into place* of public trunt, Republican* demand their removal and puni«hni«ut. If Congre** refuses to investigate such matter*, lle publicau* will aend men in their place* who will shrink at uo exposure for the public good. In thia course lie* the aafety not only of the party, through whoae machinery theac thing* have been and are to be accomplished, but of the commonwealth to whom all partiea look for power and support. The Iowa Con vention touches the right chord wheu it declare* in favor of investigations, wheu it demanils that corrupt officials every where shall be "uuloaded." Till creation. what ahull «« ilo villi the Japanese Indemnity Fund, h.w been raised again, and tho pru|NMal o( l'rof. It ap|>ean, however, that the wholo damage and conncqnent ex penditure chargeable to the fund did not exceed SiO.OUO. It -would be an act of good policy aa well aa courteey to remit the unpaid installment*, and devote the amount now in hand (after deducting what little may belong to the officer* and crew of tho Wyoming an prize money) to norno international found» tion which may remind the JapaneM people forever that thin country i* equally geuerona and jn*t. Ex-Govt-rnor Dennison, of Ohio, and Henry T. Itlow, of Mlsaonrt. have ac cepted the appointment o' Commi* aioner* of the l>i«lriet of Columbia. Ex-Senator Cattel, of New Je rwy. who waa alno appoiutml, hiu declined. Thia leavea a vacancy which mu>l be Ailed by Preatilent Grant. We do not Is'liove he will appoint Htm* Shepherd. D. W. Vooauxg* positively de> liu<'* to be a candiilate for Congreaa, unying, "I could not accept the position. even if I waa elected and a commission tendered me without any effort or agency on my It i* juat aa well. When men like VoorLtea drop out of politica there will be an end to old and injurious prejudice*. Tut Canadian* are wrestling with an alleged " transcontinental telegraph" ateal. It noern* that the project is to he ao arranged that private )>er*ons iu favor of the Government are to get the •• job " and extract all the money which pyi be iqiiNinl out of it, and then turn the line over to the Dominion Govern ment. Wax* the thrifty German Govern ment confiscated the property of the Archbiahop of Poaen, who ia now in the Penitentiary, they got hold of $123, f jO in caah. I'sxsidext Grant haa made a good se lection in appointing aa Amain tan t Secre tary of tho Treasury — rice Sawyer kicked ont—Charlea F. Conant, of N«v Hampshire. Mr. Conant ia a capable man, haa had nine year* experience In the Treasury Department, In which he haa riien atep by step to hia present honorable poaition. This ia true civil service reform. A worthy mbordinate deserves promotion, and in nine cues out of ten ia far better qualified for the poaition to which promoted than any mere politician. The fact ia that in the Treasury, aa in other Government de partmenta, the major portion of admin istrative aa well aa judicial decisiona are made by those whose namea never ap pear attached thereto. We predict that Mr. Conant will do credit to the office. Curtmi, the Senator, aaya the St. Lonis Drmocrat, is one of thoae unlucky men who never opena hia mouth with out putting hia foot in it. Hia letter in defense of his gag-law doea not disarm the prvaa, nor convince anybody that the bill waa not intended aa a piece of revenge upon the papers. However, we aup|M>ae the public career of Senator Carpenter is well-uigh closed. The }nm> ple of Wisconsin have never been able tJ .understand hia justification of the salary-grab—and never will. Two Stage* Slopped and Robbed. [From lk« Kurcka Bestlatl, Juot SC.) The monotony attending stage travel ha* once mora been broken. Diabolical Attempt to Wrock a Trail la Michigan. A diapatch to th» Chicago Times, from Battla Creek, Mich., dated Jane 10th, giTe* the following: A moat infamous and diabolical at* Umpt to wmck the night expreaa on the Michigan Central Railroad waa made at Johnson's carve, between this city and Augnsta, tlx miles from thii place and three mile* from the latter, on Thura duy night last, the particular* of which have been kept from the publio by the railroad men and officials. On Friday morning, as the section men from Au gusta were passing over the track, the boaa of the gang noticed that the wheel of the hand-car waa considerably jarred aa it struck against the end of the rail. Noticing that the rail waa slightly slewed oat from the other, he stoppod the hand-car, when, on examination, what was his horror to discover that the splice bars hail been removed from each end of the rail, and that even' spike had been drawn oat, except one in the mid dle, which just clung to the tie, and that was all. Everything had been most de liberately planned by some devilish wretches to wreck the train nnd cause a great slaughter of hmnan life. Aboat one mile east of the carve is a signal station, railed " Bedford." At this stopping place there is nothing ex cept a Hiuall Htation-house, which will accommodate a few ]>eniona, aud in which are kept such tools an are neces sarily used by the track repairers. The country in nnd jirouud the station is quite well populated by well-to-do fann ers, for whoso accommodation this point was made u Mopping place b^- the com pany. In the immediate vicinity of the station-holme, however, there are no houses, ami in fact for some distance from it. The wonld-be train-wreckers first came to this station-house, pried open the door, without fear of being discovered, and took just such tools ns they were in ne»nl of to pat iuto execu tion their hellish designs, llaviug pro cured the tools, they evidently proceeded to the curve and quietly displaced the rail at their pleasure. Tho expres* passed safely oror the death trap. The Intl.. iron spike, junt Kirilv clinging to the wooden tie, *n« all that averted the catastrophe. It wiw the alcnder cord on which hung a hun dred precious live* or more. The ]huw cnger* ou the night express on Thur* ilay little know the ilooui which they hiul e*ra|>ed, and the danger which they had pass,,I through. It Wd rained that evening and the night wax dark, and juit anch a one a» would have been cho sen (or de«dH of violence and robbery. Johnson's curve in a sharp one, right on tho bonk of the Kaliuuaxoo lUver, down which the whole train would havu I>een precipitated to the depth of twentv feet Into tho water, which at thia particular point 1« deep euough to take the whole train under water. Any pvrnon acquaint ed with tbi* locality cannot think of the consequence* of tho diaaatcr without a thrill of horror. It would hnvo been terrible, and another would have been added to the li«t of railroad disaster*. It is not plain what the real d^-sign of the uiiscreats <ra»-to (daughter human life by the whole*ale or to rob the express car. It is difficult to tell, if rubbery was | tinir object, bow they could succeed in it, I as the entire train would have been en 1 gulfed beneath the water, without any chance of getting at the wreck to accure their booty. As imsm as the Occident was made known, all of the employee* of the road who knew of the affair wen- *ilenerd, for the pur]H>*e of, if |H>**iblc, getting aome clue to the perpetrator*. So very i|ni«t was the secret kept that but four or five person* knew about it in.thia city, ami thi* auuouucemcut will take our jxsiple completely by *urpri*e. On Friday night, and for two or three night* following, the track along that nectiou wa* |>alrollcdby armed men,who were on the lookout for the return of the wrecker*, but nothing has transpired indicating any proluliility of their return, Another question is arc these fellow* in any way connected with those who robbed the eipre** car at New Ilnflalo, or are they working by themselves? IVrhap* there is a regufarly organized gang of theitv robls r* ojk rating in thi* State. Reno Itemi. [From the Journal, July 2.)
