THE EVENING NEWS
WEDNESDAY, : : MARCH 30, 1881
ipcica
Lut Sunday erenlng at the Metropolitan
Temple, Sen Frsaoisoc, the exercises
were of unusual interest. It hexing
been previoualy snnonneed thst the
younger Kelloeh would assist his father
in the regular Sabbath evening services,
the spacious baildisg wss crowded ss
long ss a live soal oould sqaeeze into
any portion of it, while namsroua sen
and women were unable to obtain admission.
The part young Kalloch took in
the eervicea coneisted in the delivery of
a speech in acknowledgment of the sympathy
snd good offices extended to him
during the terrible ordeal he haa recently
paaaed through, and defining hia preaent
poaition and future plan of action. Ho
expreaeed hia firm belief that Qod had
been with bim and maintained him
through the long and terrible trial ha had
• juat emerged from, directing everything
for the beet. But he did not aay that
God directed and aaaiated him to kill

the verdict ol the jury, which he con\x=req-\

gentlemen, and, aaid he, "under the rul\x=req-\
inge of a wiae and inoorrupiibla judge, I

the rights of manhood and the privilegea
of oitixenahip, in accordance not only
with the aanotiom of human law and joa\x=req-\
tioe, but, I believe, in accordance with
the eternal and immutable righteouaneea
of God."
With rvgard ta himaelf and hia plana
bo aaid that circumstances beyond hia
control had given bim a publicity incompatible
with hia holy calling, and ha
bad accordingly decided to reaiga hia
official poaition in that church, together
with hia poaition in the ministry, believing
that he could Ight life's buttles
better for himaelf and othera in the
ranke. 8aid he:
1 have alwaya been, and I intend to be,
a peaceable citizen. I believe as much as
any turn who hears mo in honest laare
huneetly executed, llut my ideas of a coa\x=req-\
scleutioas snd peaceablo disposition do
not involve a denial ef the sacred right of
self-defense. Nobody who doee not assault
me ehall ever be assaulted by me. But the
• laws to which I wish to pay deference and
reepcct must protect the rights of me and
mine. There to be a reign of peace
aud decency in Haa Francisco. There is
an abundant opportunity here for every
good right arm to make itself felt, and fur
every honest voioe to make iteelf beard in
the inlereeta of onr city and our civilisa\x=req-\
tion. There are queetions to be discussed,
wrongs to be righted, iniquities to be ex\x=req-\

addreee oureetvee like men to this busi\x=req-\
neee. Bnt indecent personal journalism,
personal politica. detective polios devil\x=req-\

or personal violence, are not the
work of men, but of boys and barbarians.

Tbe Virginia Chnmicti uaea the follow\x=req-\
ng language in eupport of the infamous
ottery bill recently passed by our 8UU
jaglal»lu*a: "Hon. C. C. Steveneon
wpeetedly endeavored to aall hie
lewspapcr to tbe Lottery managers, aoJ
be Lottery maaagara bare repeatedly
leeliaed to boy tbe thing."
Aa there ia sot a word of truth in tha
ibove-quoted ChronieU argument (?) we
eould perhapa be juatified ia calling it a
aalioioaa lie. We will aot do ao, however,
bat will aimpiy atate a (ew (aota.
Early ia the political campaign ot laat
fall, aeveral prominent Democrata ot
Storey county, who doubted Ihe loyalty
the ChronieU to the Democratic party
beoaoaa that journal had ao freqneotly
"gone back" oa the nominee* of the
party for aelflah considerations, endeav\x=req-\
ered to porchaae tbe Nswa to aae ia
aapport of the Democracy of tbia State
aad county. The proprietor of the
Nawa, however, positively refused to
aell it, and ainoe that time baa
never offered to aell it to the
lottery maaagara, or to aay other
ewiadliag ooaoera. Bat even if the
proprietor of the Nawa bad offered
to aell it, what of it? Would tha faot, if
it waa true, be aa argameat ia favor ot
tbe lottery ecbeme? If a merchant aella
a aack of Hoar to a liar, or to tbe
ChronieU maa, doee it logioally follow
that tbe merobaat upholda lying, or in\x=req-\
donee the contemptible ooaree pareaed
by tbe ChronieU? The faot that the Virginia
ChronieU waa offered for eale eight
moatbe ago without aay taken eannot
be need aa aa argameat in eapport of or
agaiaat the lottery ecbeme, or aay other
awladie. Bat what a hard eaae tbe
ChronieU baa ia eapport ot the lottery
awindle, when it ie compelled to beg tbe
queetion eo completely aa to make per\x=req-\
eonal attacka upon the proprietor of tbe
Nm in order to divert attention from
tbe real poiat at iaeae!
Will tbe Virginia ChronieU anawer tbe
following qaeetiona: Did that journal
oppoee the peas age of a lottery bill by
our Legialalare a little more than two
yean ago? If ao, what caused it to
ataltify ita former record, and favor the
peeaage of a lottery bill by oar laet
Legislature? Did not tbe Canon oor\x=req-\
reepondent of that journal two yean
ago aay of a lottery bill which waa then
befon oar Legislature: "The scheme ie
eimply a cheeky attempt to give tbe
Stale a email bribe to permit three or
four fellowe to ran a gigentio hogging
game"? It a£ what baa ao changed hie
mind aa to lead bim to now aupport a
aimilar "gigentio hogging game"? It
would be more manly for the ChronieU
to answer tkeee questions tbaa to indulge
in penoaal abuee of tboae pereona
who have tbe independence ot character
to uphold and defend the good name of
oar State againat the oorrupt schemes of
"tbree or four fellowe who intend to run
a gigantic bogging game."

Candaiub, March 29.—A formidable

Governor of Kooab, baa indnoed three
Herat regimenta stationed at Kooab to

eafely inferred that the mnrdsr of Mo\x=req-\

three regiments, waa tha flrat act of the
rebellion, Instead of the result of a private
quarrel. At laat accounts the rebellion
waa ao formidable that Ayoob
