In aabmltting my annual report, a* re
a aired by law, I have deemed It proper
uat the taxpayere and eltlaena ehonld be
fnformed of tbe condition of the town and
ite financial (landing at the preeent time.
The finance* of the town are la a very
healthy condition, oumtderlng the extreme
dallneee of batlaeee tbe paet year.
Tbe revenue from the different branohee
of bueineee baa been tteadily on the da
creaae tbe paat year, and the Board of
Trueteee have been governed In expendi
ture aooordingly. Five tbouaand dollare
of tbe town debt have been liquidated.
In the different departmenta tbe greateet
care have been taken by tbe Committeee to
bave tbe ruoning expeneea of the town ae
low aa they oould poeiibly be made and
eatiafy the oitlxen* at large.
Tbe water work* and everything con
nected with them are in the very beet of
order. The Chief Eoglneer of the Fire
Department baa bran very vigilant In look
ing after tbe bydranta and main*, and
kraping them in good oondltion.
The etreete bave been well attended to
and kept In food order.
The officer* of lb* town bar* been faith
ful and energ*tio in th* discharge of their
dotlM. Ths polio* have been vigilant in
guarding the lntereeta of tb« town and
kerplog away tmpiolona cbaraour* wbo
are always watching for opportunltlae to
praotloe tbeir nefarious busimss.
Tbe Fire Department are dsservlng of
tnoeb praise for tbe able and efficient man
ner In wbleb they bare acquitted tbem
selvee on all occasions wben tbeir servloee
were required. I trust tbe people of Gold
Hill will continue to bare tbeir interests
guarded In tbe future by as an efficient
bod j of firemen as tboee wbo have guarded
tbem in tbe past.
In conclusion, I would say that our
duties as a Board of Town Trustee* will
eoon b* at an *nd. Tbe people of Oold
Hill are soon to hare a obange of govern
ment, tbe last Legislature disincorporating
tbe town and passing tbe Consolidation
bill, by wbleb tbe city of Virginia and tbe
town of Oold Hill bar* been consoli
dated with tbe eounty of Storey in one
government. It waa tbe opinion of tboee
advooating tbe measure tbat tbe Intereeta
of all oonoernad would b* furthered by
baring one government instead of three.
As it is but an experiment, it remains to
b* ***n what advantage*, if any, will b*
gained to tbe busineee portion of tbe town
br the obange. It will, in my eetimatlon.
be found necessary bv tbe lnooming ad
ministration to exercise tbe greatest dis
cretion in tbe management of affairs for
tbe coming year.
Tbe reran ue from taxable property will
b* vary mueh Ire* than what it was last
year, and is likely to eontinue decreasing
unleee some development* in the mine*
would give a new aipeot to affair*.
I aiuoerely thank the members of the
Board for the very able manner in wbloh
they have aa*l*t*d me in the management
of town affairs. Being compelled by other
business to abeeet myself a good deal from
the lows and from tbe meetings of Ik*
