A Sunset Scene.—Few persons who dwell in the lowlands of this District would credit the panoramic grandeur of a sunset scene, snch as may be witnessed on any clear evening from the apev of White Pine Mountain. Not long einco we stood on the very highest pinnacle of this grand old mountain and beheld the last departing rays of a glorious sun as they gradually fueled and flickered in the far distant weBt, until day was blooded with night. No language can adequate ly depict the shifting beauties of that sunset scene as witnessed by us from an elavation of nearly 12,(881 feet above the level of tbe sea. On reaching tbe sum mit, our enraptured vision was greeted with s sight that would hare taxed the art and skill of the poet and painter to portray. In front atood the bold, broad peaks of tbe Diamond range, towering up like grim giant sentinels in tbe midst of a vast plain. To the south and west spread out broad level valleys of growing grass, here and there dotted with cor.y dwellings. Away to the northward the stations on the Elko road resembled corks floating ot sea. Looking down upon our own three towns, the pale bine smoke was to be seen, lazily curling up, from out tbe numerous chimneys, telling of the preparation of the evening meal and the family groups who— ‘ Around the bWUrth*totM>, a ha|>]>.v tin our. 1’nlt* In revelry, mirth and song.1 Far beyond Ruby Valley, to tbe north .ind eastward, a snow-clad neak lifted its frozen locks and penetrated the ethereal blue that shed a soft, hazy radiance around its fair, white brow; while stretching around to tbe south, like a silver thread, which glistened in the ex piring sunbeams, lay the winding Duck water and Bull Springs, the latter * l>o traying the secret of its silent course by appearance of that livelier green.’ The mellow green of the fresh springing grass that overspread, the whole land scape like a velvet carnet; the dim out lines of the distant hills, ns they melted imperceptibly away into the bluo of the circumambient air, presented snch a soft and yielding view as the tall gathering shades of evening spread the mantle of darkness over all, that no one could be hold the grandeur of the scene without being lost in wonder and admiration. As this soul-inspiring seene was shut out from our vision, we could not help ex pressing the hope that when we have passed the zenith of our glory , that when our sun has set in the west for all eternity; that when the lengthening shades of time are shutting out this bright world from our vision; that when death has quenched our Inst earthly flame, we may look back through the dim vista of years and see earth’s glories fading from us, as peacefully and joy fully as we viewed that sunset scene. Amen. Murder and Robbery.—We learn from Travis’ Pioche stage driver, that Cave Valley, CO miles east of this city, was on tfanday last the scene of a terrible trag edy. Two teamsters, Pierson and Ames, were en rente from Toano with freight for Pioche, having with them a kind of helper or bADger on known as * Pilgrim,’ who at the point designated deliberately got into one of the wagons and seizing the pistols belonging to the teamsters commenced bis murderous assault. One of the men was killed on the spot, and the other it is feared can not recover. Robbery appears to have been the mo tive prompting the diabolical deed; for no sooner had the bloody work been oc complish'd than * Pilgrim rifled the pockets of his victims, taking money, watches, and whatever else valuable they possessed. lie then mounted one of the horses belonging to the teamsters and insda his escape. Our informant did not know which one of the men was killed, or in fact any further particulars than those already given. It is to be hoped that tho perpetrator of this most atro cious murder may be speedily brought to justice, though it is doubtful whether anyl*ody has yet started in pursuit of him. Tn« Lost Watch.- A* it may be that duo people are idiotic ouough to couple the finding—seven years hence—of the lost watch that ‘ lien Hasaan’ suffered for in an Arabian romance published by ns list Bunduy, we impress ourselves to notify all such that a watch and chain was actually stolen from a lady’# cham ber between the morning of the fob and the evening of the flth instant, in this city, and has not been recovered. A de scription of this property may lead to its recovery, and a# it contains a relic sacred to the memory of one who has gone, we hope this may lead to proper exertion# on the part of the police uud conslabn laiy of this District: Tho watch is a lady’s time-piece, of gold; the chain, which is 4 or o feet long, is of Australian gold, and to it is attached an oval locket, with n secret spring, containing a por trait. Seventy-fivo dollars reward has been privately promised for iu return to the owner, who is a poor, hard-working young lady of thia place. District Court.—Rigelow and King were yesterday on trial iu this Court, charged with grand larceny. The al leged offense consists of tho unlawful taking of ore from the ttonth Aurora mine. The case was argued by counsel at the evening session of the Court, hut at latest Advices tho jury lmd not re turned a verdict. Roth jnen ore Cornish miners. Information Wanted.- Mrs. G. W. Munroe, of Poona, Illinois, writes to a gentleman in this city, waking inquiry su to the whercatouts of her son, Ira W. Munroe, who, when Inst heard from, was prospecting in Eastern Nevada. Any person knowing ought concerning him will confer a favor by addressing ns above. Horse Tali.- Races and rumors of races are all the go in White Pine just now. fteveral well-known horse fanciers of Bliermantown were over yesterday, and horse talk was indulged* in to an alarming extent. There was a good deal said about * soap talking,1 but we oelievo none was put up. A Candidate A mono Ps.—f\ A. Disorderly.—A drunken fellow kicked up some disturbance on Treasure street, yesterday, but lie was taken away by his friends before tho ‘ bloody perliece’ got their clutches on him.
