A wish at close of day, The evening waits ; A hope, a morning ray From eastern gates; A bright and sunnv spot, Along the stream, A quiet and sheltered grot, Where we Can dream; A window, looking west, Toward sunset gold, Bespeaking gentle rest, When we are old ; A glow in yonder sky, Where shadows creep, And love’s soft lullaby Inviteth sleep: A hand to clasp in ours, With pressure dear; And then—some simple flowers With friendships near; A good night gloaming kiss, Life’s day complete; A lingering hour of bliss, Where twilights meet. —Walter Bruce in Blackwood’s Magazine. Facts About Gly cerine. Glycerine is one of the most useful and misunderstood of everyday assist ants. It must not be applied to the skin undiluted, or it will cause it to be- j come red and hard, but if rubbed well into the skin while wet it has a j softening and whitening effect. It will prevent and cure chapped hands. Two or three drops will often stop the baby’s stomaclieache. It will allay the thirst of fever pa- ! tients and soothe an irritable cough ■ by moistening the dryness of the throat. Equal parts of bay rum and gly cerine applied after shaving makes a ' man rise up and call the woman who '■ provided it blessed. Applied to shoes, glycerine is a great preservative of the leather and effectually keeps out the water and prevents wet feet. A few drops of glycerine put in fruit jars the last thing before stealing them helps to keep the preserves from molding on the top. Half a teaspoonful every half hour will cure summer complaint or dys sentery. -- - - A Pn>ph(cy. Christmas Day falling on Monday : this year is a circumstance that re- j calls the following rhyme stored away ! in the British museum: If Christmas Day on Monday be, J A great winter that year you’ll see, And full of winds both loud and i shrill; But summer, truth to tell, High winds there shall be, and strong, Full of tempest lasting long; While battles they shall multiply, And great plenty of beasts shall die. They that be born that day, I ween, They shall be strong each one and keen; He shall be found that stealeth aught; Tho’ thou be sick, thou diest not. ___ Responsibility of Dog Owners. The Supreme Court of Iowa recently affirmed tho decision of the lower court in the suit of Cameron against O’Brien. Cameron brought suit to recover dam ages sustained by him through the barking of a vicious dog owned by O’Brien. Cameron was riding on horseback in the vicinity of O’Brien’s residence when a vicious dog belong ing to the later ran barking at the heels of the horse. This frightened the animal, causing it to bolt, and Cameron was unseated, sustaining severe injuries. The Court held that “the owners of barking and vicious dogs are responsible for all damages caused by such dogs, and that the own ers keep them at their own peril.” A Stockton attorney put through the Probate Court, settled up and dis tributed among the heirs, an estate, within three days after the death of the owner and testator. It is expect ed that the proceedings for his disbar ment will soon be begun. Yuma, A. T., has elected a Repub ' lican municipal tioket for the first time ! in twenty years. FINE JOB PRINTING AT THE MWS OIETICJE. I I Cured by Ayer’s Cherry Pectoral Mrs. P. D. IIall, 217 Genesee St.* Lockport, N. Y., says : “Over thirty years ago, I remembe# hearing my father describe the wonder-> ful curative effects of Ayer’s Cherry Pectoral. During a recent attack of La Grippe, which assumed the form of a catarrh, soreness of the lungs, accom panied by an aggravating cough, I used various remedies and prescriptions* While some of these medicines partially alleviated the coughing during the day* none of them afforded me any relief from that spasmodic action of the lungs which would seize me the moment I attempted to lie down at night. After ten or twelve' such nights, T was Nearly m Despair, and had about, decided to sic up all light in my easy chair, and procure what sleep I could in that way. It then oc curred to me that I had a bottle of Ayer’s Cherry Pectoral. I took a spoonful of this preparation in a little water, and was able to lie down without coughing. In a few moments I fell asleep, and awoke in the morning greatly refreshed and feeling much better. I took a teaspoonful of the Pec toral every night for a week, then grad ually decreased the dose, and in two weeks my cough was cured, ’ * Ivor’s Cherry Pectoral Sri pjiicd by Pr.Ayer & Co., Lowell, Mass.
