REPUBLICAN AND 1JFMO ClOTlC MEETING IjAST night. Yesterday afternoon handbills were issued from our office announcing a meeting under the) auspices of the Lib ral Republicans rnnd Democrats of Tioche, at the new stand erected on Main street for the use of those of either party who might desire to address the people on the Tolitical issues which now en gross public attention. Hon. Thomas Fitch, of Salt Lake City, and Col. C. W. Lightner, candidate for residential Elec. tor, wore announced as speakers. Not withstanding the short notice given, from 1,000 to 1,200 assembled on the ground. Bonfires were lighted rip in the street, and a bund of music enlivened the occa sion. Col. C. W. Lightner was called to the chair, and made a brief address, thanking the people for the honor ac- corded him and expressing his earnest ness in behalf of the party and its sue cess in November. On motion, the following fientlemen were proposed as officers of the meeting and unanimously elected: Chairman, Col. C. V. Lightner; Vice Presidents, C. H. Beckwith, II. I. Thorn ton, Juo. C, Mnynnrd, Judge Miller of Idaho, W. H. Mendel son, B. F. Sides, Jns. Tierson, Henry Hives, Ed. Dona hue, T. R. Butler, M. F. Tarpey, M. SehuKtrich, Jno. Boeder, Jno. Kune, Jas. Clancey, E. L. Bradshaw, Jesse Beene, Phil. L. Shoaff. Dr. D. L. Deal, Cspt. Win, Lubbock, Thos, Wallace; Secreta ries, Geo. T. Gorman, C'has. E. Harris, B. F. Hastings, Jr. Hon. Thos. Fitch was then introduced. It is hardly necessary to introduce this gentleman to a Nevada audinnce. His reputation extends throughout the Pacific) coast ss a first-class orator. We connot undertake to folio the eloquent speaker through the course of his address. Wo will say, bowevrr, that he proved himself fully equal to the occa sion. Whatever may be thought of the justice of his criticism of the Grunt Administration, his perfect famil iarity with the history of the country could not fail to attract the nttentiou of the most casual observer, and his pleas ant, easy delivery and stentorian voice chained the attention of all present to his remarks. It is noticeable that he indulged in no bitterness towards Gen. Grant; he upplauded his military genius, but bi-lieveit he had failed as the Cuitf Magistrate of the country. He d pre dated the re-election of Gnnt, owing to his association with corrupt men who "Wire supported in their schemes of plunder ty the Administration. He re ferred to the crippled condition of the Mouth, the legitimate result of the carpet liaguers who had been sent among tliem by Grant's subalterns to feast and fatten upjti their misfortunes. While the ttpeaker had ever been arrayed against the defiant rebels, he had only fellow. ship aud good will for the people of the Smith now that the war had ended. He paid a high compliment to Mr. Greeley as the first mnn in the country to f'u.iiu piou universal amnesty as well as uni versal suffrage. ' It is no less creditable to our people than it must have been gratifying to the speaker to- note the fact that the best order and decorum prevailed. Those who originated the mooting have reason to feel proud of the success of their fiit effort Those of opposite political sentiments have no unfairness to com plain of, and can only counteract the effects of this ' meeting by sound argu ment and sober appeals to the judgment of the people. Want of space is our apology for so brief and disjointed a sketch of the meeting of last night. Candidates. We inadvertently omit ted in onr former issue to announce the candidacy of M. F. Tarpey for Sheriff, subject to the action of the Liberal Re publican and Democratio County Con vention.
