Woods Dischabqed. Itj Will b re
meintered by our readers that on the
afternoon of tha 20 tb ult., Jamet Woods
stabbed and killed a man named Win.
McCarty at Panaca Flat. Aa stated
by na the morning after the ocenrrencj,
the two men had been playing cards,
and at the end of the game Woods ac
cused the other two of playing unfairly.
This was denied, and McCarty called
Woods a s n of a b h. Woods offered
to go out and fight, but McCarty declin
ed. Woods then left and soon after
Teturned with a large knife. A gentle
man present tried to induce Woods to
eive up the knife, aud had almost suc
ceeded in getting it away from Liui, when
McCarty came in and struck Woods a
heavy blow. Woods then used the knife
with fatal effect. He surrendered him
self to an officer and was taken to jnil."
His examination before a committing
magistrate was purposely aud properly
deferred until the Grand Jury could
investigate it. and veBterduv. after hear
ing the evidence in the oase, the Grand
Jury ignored the bill and Woods was set noi,j about

THE KIR8T RAILROAD IN PIOCHE.
Yesterday was the, time set for putting
in motion the cars of the Fioche and
Bullionville Railroad. - The announce
ment of the eveut in our columns yester
day morning, drew a large crowd to the
summit near the head of Meadow Valley
street, being . attracted by the interest
felt in the success of the enterprise, and
a just pride in the energy of the gentle"
men who projected the first railroad in
Eastern Nevada. The locomotive bear
ing the name of our fellow-citizen CoU
J. W. kightner was first Urea up, to
which were attached the cars for the ac
commodation of those who wished to
avail themselves of Gen. Poge's invita
tion to tkao the first railroad ride in
Pioche. The, cars were run, around

Meadow Valley office, and the loudest

Couirn HOSPITAL. We visited this
institution yesterday, and from E. S.
Williams, the steward, we gathered some
statistics of the hospital for the month
of November: In hospital, Nov. 1, 17;
admitted during the month, 22; died, 2;
discharged cured, 15; in hospital Nov
30. 22. None of the patients are danzor
ously ill, all are convalescing, and sever
al will soon be able to so to work again.
The hospital is in as good condition as
nossible: itis well provisioned, kept warm
and comfortable, but it is too small for
the number of patients now occupying

Countt Jail. Yesterday morning
there were eight prisoners in the County
Jail, two of whom were charged with
murder, three were serving out fines
imposed by the Justice of the Peace for
Pioche, one is an insane man, one is in
on a charge of robbery, and another is
awaiting examination. Sines' iuterview
ins the Jailer, Woods, charged with
murder, has been discharged.
Equanimity of Timpkb. Of all the
virtues an even temper is most prized.
It has bean our aim to cultivate this
great virtue, but when we contemplute
the' absoence of our Fowler's Sexual

Th Grand Jury for the December
Term of the District Court is now in
session. It will first dispose of such
criminal matters as may be brought be
fore it, and then give attention to County
affairs generally the jnil. Hospital,
finances, etc. The matter of selling
aims to Indians in violation of law ought
to receive the attention of the Grand

Fob San Fhahcisco. Captain William
Boyle, who has been in Pioche several
weeks examining the mines of Ely Dis
trict, Btarts this morning for San Fran
cisco. Capt. Boyle is well pleased with
the developments and prospects of the
district, and will give a favorable account
of our mines.
Db. C. G. Foltz, formerly County
Physician, ha left for the celebrated
Paso Bobles Hot Springs, in San Luis
Obispo county, Cul. The Doctor is
suffering from the effects of a tumor on
the liver, and it is hoped his sojourn at
the Springs will restoie him to health.

Charles Going died suddenly at the Sau
Jose House late yesterday afternoon.
