Eev. J. R. Egbert's Lectcrk. Night before last the Rev. Mr. Egbert delivered, in the public school-house, an admirable lecture on the "True Aim and Scope of Education." The lecture wag clear, forcible and instructive, every word of it being replete with pood, sound sense ml useful suggestious. There were, however, only thirteen auditors to hear what, we do not hesitate to say, was an intellectual treat rarely accorded to an audience here. Is it not a crying Bbauie that the disinterested zeal of the elo quent young clergyman, who takes so much trouble to stir up a sense of re sponsibility in a matter of vital impor tance to the well-being of our little ones, should meet Buch a cold response from the parents and relatives, who, one would think, are the most concerned in the ob ject of the lecture? At the earnest re quest of the few who were present, Mr. filbert has consented to repeat his ad dress, in the same place, on Saturday next, at I1, p. m. It is to be hoped that on that occasion the parents and relatives of the children attending school will be more numerously represented especially (19 the expression of their opinion as to the necessity of improved school accom modation will be invited. Jcdqk Hall and Bristol. Judge C. P. Hall, whom we formerly knew as Pro bate Judye of Deer Lodge county, Mon tana, but who is now extensively inter ested in mines in Bristol district, paid us a friendly call yesterday. Notwithstanding the Judge expressed objections to hav ing the promising mines of Bristol given Newspaper notoriety, his own views and observations accord so fully with all the reports we have had from that section during the last month, that we caunot forbear putting on record the very strong probabilty that Bristol will rank, ere many months, with the first bullion pro ducing camps in the State. Develop ments are now in progress which promise that steady employment will be given to five or six hundred men in Bristol dis trict the coming summer. Judge Hall w materially interested in a number of the Bristol mines, the most thoroughly developed of which is the Hercules. The Hercules ore is of the smelting class, and is surprisingly rich. There is a vast amount of it out, ready for reduction, the immense new furnaces at Bristol are the largest and most oomplete on the coast, and will soon be put in oper ation. Nkws raojf Waix'apai. A party of miners arrived here, day before yester day, from Wallapai, Arizona. They say the ores of that district are good, and the ledges well denned and of sufficient "tent, but that there is no capital in the country, and thnt there are more men u there is work for at cash wages, jfney think Wallapai has a bright future, out discourage stampeding in that direo I10?, at the present time. One furnace ?. el running, and successfully, but ha1 suspended operations at the time r informant left from what cause 'hey could not say. Mb. Wm. Cody, just in from Wallapai district, on horseback, reports the roads n bad condition all along the Meadow Valley Wash, but fair on the Muddy. He was six days making the trip from Wallapai to Bullioaville. There are wee towns in Wallapai district, Chlo ", Mineral Park and Cirbat, which are out five miles apart, and each has a population of from four to fire hundred. 'r. Cody passed a large number on the "oad to Wallapai from Pioche. He 'links the majority of them will be dis jointed in seeking employment. Stage Lini to Bristol. A company has been organized in the city, we are credibly informed, to put in operation, in few days, a Htage line between Pioche a Bristol. It will prove a great con venience to both places, and, we trust, Profitable to the proprietors. It will Probably start as a tri-weekly. A post Hoe lg needed at Bristol and daily mail rvice between here and there. Peti uobs should be circulated asking these ''org of the postal department. THE EVENING BELJ.H. Thoae evening bellsl thoae evening bells' How many a tale their music tells Of yooth. and home, and native clime. Where I am beard their soothing chime. Those pleasant hours have passed wsy, And many a heart that then was gay Within the tomb now darkly dwells. And hears no more those evening bells. And so it will be when I am gone, That tuneful Deal will tin h. I' When other bards shall walk these dells. And sing your praise, sweet evening hells. Thb following communication is from a parent and taxpayer: Editor Rbcobd: I was one of those who attended the educational meeting Tuesday evening, and Tint port in this morning's paper, send along the following notes: One would natur ally expect at such a meeting to see a large gathering of the parents, but in stead there was only on patron of the school, though there were present twelve other nersonfl intrAerari i t.A education. If there are persons interested in the.cause of education it is to be hoped they will be present. B. Pioche February 26, 1873. A Railroad Cebtiin. Private in. formation from Salt Lake City, which is autnentio, assures us that Pioche will be put in railroad communication with that place within two years. The consolida tion of the bait Lake and Bingham Can yon and Salt Lake and Sevier Valley Railroad Companies means business, and no mistake. Strong forces of men will be put to work grading as soon as spring opens, and iron and rolling stock have already been negotiated for in the East. The Palisade, Eureka and Pioche Company must push ahead fast if they would get the first train in here. Thb Po8tofft.ce Improvement. Post master Barnes has added a great im provement to the postoffice, both orna mental and useful. Ho has placed in position three hundred lock-boxes, nent ly painted and numbered. They are di agonally arranged from the entrance, so that a dozen can at the same time be unlocking their mail without crowding each other; and the place of general de livery has been enlarged and embelished. Our postoffice now presents a very city like appearance. Rough Accommodation. A young man from Utah went to the Sheriff's office, night before last, saying he was told he could get lodging by calling there. The Sheriff told him he had no place to put him except in the jail; and in the jail be willingly went. The prisoners, ascertain ing the circumstances, proceeded to "josh" him at such a lively rate that he was glad to be released and seek quarters elsewhere. Jctenilb Depravity. If there is a law to restrain the youths of Nevada' from going to the devil it ought to be put in force; and if there is no such a law such an one ought to be enacted. It is no unusual thing to see the gambling shops and saloons of Pioche thronged with urchius below sixteen years of aye. The first steps towards the gallows or penitentiary are usually thus taken. Wk thought it was unnecessary, iu thi last decades of the nineteenth century, to state that publishers are not responsi ble for what enters their advertising col umns, so long as the matter is free of absolute obscenity; but this fact does not Beem to be generally understood in Pioche. The advertising space of news papers is a saleable commodity. In the Justice's Court, yesterday, Jo seph F. Mayott appeared, plead guilty to the charge of peddling without a license, and will appear this morning for sent ence. Mr. Mayott says he was ignorant of the fact that he was liable to license exaction. To Arrive To-dat. The following passengers left Hamilton yesterday for Pioche, who will arrive on to-day's stage: Ed. French, L. Lewis, D. Strickland, 8. P, Leeds, D. B. Nye, Mrs. French, Mas ter Hereford. Boone & Dolman have closed a oontraot with ranchers in Utah, near Beaver, to immediately deliver them a large quantity of hay, it being impossible to get hay at the present time from lower Meadow Valley. The Raymond and Ely Mining Com pany had a largo number of men at work yesterday shoveling snow from the graded road which leads around the hill to their dump pile. Tue last we heard of Deputy Indian Agent Ingulls he was coaxing the Indi ans down on the Muddy to accept his leg-wool patches called blankets. Arrived Last Night. The following passengers arrived by last night's Ham ilton stage: Miss M. O'Brine, C. C. Con way and Mike Delehante. In the District Court yesterday, nil the time was ocoupied in the trial of the at tachment case of Coburn vs. Newman, still pending. Eoos, butter and potatoes are getting scarce in the market, owing to the in clement weather and the bad state of the roads. The snow melted considerably about the middle of the day yesterday, but enough is left for the boys to enjoy fine ooasting. A number of freight teams arrived to day, both from Toano and Lehi. They were from forty to sixty days on the road. Quicksilver was getting scarce, but we thiuk a quantity arrived yesterday. D. C. Bctterfied, a prominent busi ness man of Salt Lake City, is in town. H. Ward received a large inroice of furniture yesterday. THEATa.Last night FrouFronwas given again in the same excellent style as previously. Mr. Maguire has re-engaged Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Bates to give twelve more special performances, the first com mencing to-night, when Kotzebue's grand play of the "Stranger" will be given Mr. and Mrs. Bates in the prin cipal roles. To-morrow night Gia cometti's great historical play of "Eliz ibeth," Queen of England, will be given. iai fcuuiLiuu ui turn must difficult role is spoken of by the press of California and the Eastern States in terms of highest praise. Hitherto we have seen this talented lady in only the emotional order of plays, such as " East Lynne," Camille," etc. In Elizabeth she appears in a grander school of dra ma, and in which Bhe evinces her great versatility, especially in the last scene, which we compared to Cbas. Kean's last scene of Louis the XI. Tickets can be secured to-day for to-morrow's perform ance, as well as to-night's. After this evening the admission to private boxes will be ten dollars. A valuable horse belonging to H. A. Thomas is suffering from secondary epi zootic, or the dropsical stage, and the probability is that he will die. He was in fair way to recover from the first at tack, but, having been put to work, had a relapse. Don't work epizootio horses too soon. Subscribed Liberally. Messrs. Fish and Caldwell yesterday waited upon citi zens to receive subscriptions towards supporting a resident Presbyterian min ister in Pioche. We aregratified to learn that a liberal amount was subscribed. The canvass, we believe, is not yet com pleted. A prostitute was fonud, night before last, late, by a colored man on his way home, lying out in the snow back of the Court House. His attention was attract ed to her by her groans. He assisted her home. She was intoxicated, and came near perishing from cold. The Main street loafers met with a terrible disappointment yesterday after noon. There was a stubbornly-contested dog-fight on the hill-side down below the Hospital, and it was all over before they heard anything about it. What a splen did lot of fun all gone to waste. A doo fight occurred yesterday morn ing at the corner of Main and Laconr streets. Only three or four hundred men had got to the scene before the sublime spectacle was brought to an in glorious close by the infuriated canines being separated. Ice Coming In. Considerable ice ar rived yesterday from Rose Valley. The cakes average ten inches in thickness, and are as crystaline as could be desired. We will appreciate it about four mouths hence. The parties engaged in the drugging, the other night, are liable to be arrested. The charge, if it can be proved , may be put in such a shape as to make the pen alty extremely Bevere. Arrival op Fast Fbeioht. Two fast freight teams arrived yesterdayhfternoon, bringing varied merchandise. Notwith standing the very bad state of the roads, they came in on time. We were yesterday shown some re markably rich ore from the Chief liast Extension mine. The vein from which it was taken has just been struck and it is widening rapidly. Tbe funeral of Peter Duffy took place yesterday nfternoon. Though a stranger in Pioche, his remains were followed to the grave by a number of citizens. Tax Notice, Mining Superintendents will find it to their interest to rend the advertisement of K. J. Hanley, County Assessor, in another column. Parties just iu from Rose Valley re port that there is but little snow there. It was raiuing there when it was snow ing here. Arrival of Machinery. Several loads of machinery arrived yesterday afternoon, from Toano, for tbe new Mendha mill at Highland. The regular wood-teams are again get ting the best of the donkey codar-bnish transportation liuo. The new narrow-giiage locomotive is moving this way from Lehi, but very slowly. There is a dispatch, at the Western Union Telegraph office for Henry Dop son, Times are improving several attach ments have been released.
