Reanlt Probably Fatal,
Last night at about twenty minute,

Kentucky mine, stepped out of the Mint
Saloon, kept by John Wilson, and walked
down the street a distance of about ten

gamblers, shot him in the back with

Irugstore of Dr. 1). L. Deal, where his

which the burning and bloody clothes
hud been torn and cut. He was after
wards turned over in order that he might
feel easier, and five wonnds were found
in bis back
The most fatal one was between the

to the right of the spinal column, going
obliquely to the left and coming out

which would probably have killed

ur. uergstem told Courtney that
his case was utterly hopeless

however, when Deputy District Attorney

LHere the man vomited a quantity of

last sacrament. Frank Cleveland gave
him the pistol-Georgie Syphers told me.

not get my pistol out until he shot six

The words of Courtney were taken
by onr reporter.
Dr. Bergsteiu, the examining physic
ian, gave the opinion that the wounds
would prove fatal without doubt.
At hve minutes to eleven o'clock Court
ney still retained possession of his
senses.
The shooting waa done with a Whis

done.
McKiuney was nrrested, mid for a few
moments a large crowd followed swiftly
after the officers, but dropped off one by
one. Iu to-morrow's issue we will give !
further particulars.

.NEVADA,
The Japnn Gazette snys: " A contem
pornry, tbe Japan Herald, states that it is
confidently maintained in official circles
that the Government intends to open the
whole country to foreigners immetlintely
after the return of Iwaknra and the chiefs
of tbe mission from Europe, not leaving
it for settlement until the revision of the
treaties. Our own information does not
confirm this statement entirely, but there
is no doubt that the Government is anx
ious to see the country opened, if they
see tbe way to do it with safety to the
foreigners. It is a matter which must be
cautiously done, as tbere are still many
provinces in the interior where foreign
ers have never been seen, and where all
the old prejudices exist in tbe fullest in
tensity. Core is therefore necessary."
Vic Fbksident Wimon. The follow
iug information concerning tbe condition
of tbe Vice President is from the Alta of
July 29, and was telegraphed from Wash
ington City on the 28th:
Private advices received here confirm
the report that has been published re
garding the condition of the Vice Presi
dent. His face is represented as some
what distorted, and he has partly lost the
power of speech. He is at present under
a severe regimen of diet, the disposition
of nearly every hoar in the day being
