One of the s nidest spectacles of this country ia the ruins of a mining town, or the deserted remains of ouce prosperous mining property. Goldsmith's "Deserted Vil lage" affords a melancholy picture of human oppression and bad government, but there is some satisfaction in knowing that it ia always possible for a deserted Kuglish village to be re-peopled by a thriving and contented population. No such possibility remains for an abandoned California mining town. When the ruin sets in, it is rapid in its work and its effects irremediable. The saloon-keeper f acka up his stock, the Hebrew closes lis clothing store, the red light of the Celestial wash-house dies out; the "sport" and the courtezan hie away to more lucrative quarters; red shirts and giay have deserted the streets; the poverty-stricken landlord takes down his sign, and the town is dead. Only a few Years ago, within a oannon shot of Qain cy, flourished Elizabethtown, one of the liveliest villages in Northern California. The surrounding placers were rich. Bus iness of every kiud was on the jump. Hotels, billiard-saloons, stores, Masomo and Odd Fellow's lodges, express offices and all the accompaniments of a live vil lage sprang up like mushrooms. Pres ently there was a dearth of water. Rich strikes were less frequent. Tha miners and sports deserted, and "Betaytown" died. So effectual was its' destruction, that the very site of the streets is blotted out, and there is scarcely a vestige to mark the spot where so many thousands ni ousy men tolled and sweat and atrug, yled for gold. Plnmas National. Nkw Exploration of the Amazon litviR. Among the most recent explor ing expeditions, is that undertaken dur ing the nreaent vear. for the emloration of the Amazon river, by Professor James Orton, the well known naturalist of V as tir College. We have just received our nrst installment of correspondence from him, the publication of which we shall begin in our next iasne. Our latest ad' vices from this euterprisiug traveler are dated August 19, 1873, at which time he had paddled one thousand miles up the Great River, taking notes and making surveys and observations en route. He had an Immense distance yet to go before reaching the Cordilleras, which he ex pected to cross, and to reach borne via Panama. The letters of our eorresrjnn- dent are full of interest eonoerniug the marVelona reoinn whioti h ia avnlnrino He speaks of unbroken forests covering a space eleven hundred miles in diame ter, and other equally astonishing revs- uuua oi neiuro. locientido American An Indiana ' medium " was recently giving a spiritual explanation of certain weird strains proceeding from a closed piano when a materialistic sceptio opened the instrument and let out a !"R rat, which he had doubtless smelt. A person giving the name of John Barlow, presen ted himself, lately, to some of the lead lug firms of Italy, with a circular letter of credit of Drexel, Morgan k Co., of New lork, for two thousand pounds. He took the greater part of the money in Rome, and almost the whole of the re mainder iu Florence. On the following day, when the drafts come to be presen ted to the London house, it turned out that the credit was issued in the name of an American lady, and that the name and signature had been replaced by that of John Barlow . Sever al of the first banking houses on the continent have been defrauded of large amounts in this way, the names, in Whose favor letters Of credit hnvn hn issued, having been effaced, both in the body and in the signature, so as not to leave the alightest trace; and the name of the party inserted who presents the credil and who is ready to exhibit pass ports or proofs of identity if demanded. At virions Doints on the river Tim inn between Woolwich and Erith, there are visible at low water the remains of a sub merged forest, over which the river now flows. This fact taken in connection ith other local phenomena, has led o-e- ologists to conclude that the present out let of the Thames to the North Sea is of quite recent origin, the waters having formerly passed southward into the Weald by channels which still remain. Excavationa iu the marshes expose to view a deep stratum of twigs, leaves, seed-vessels, and stools of trees, chiellv of the yew, alder, and oak kinds. J crams Bhcti's Booth was a native of St. Paneras, London. His father was an attorney, and intended him for the same profession.- In bis youth he was a niiusnipmiui iu the British uavv. but soon left it for drawing and painting; afterward studied law, aud then practiced sculpture. He was an accomplished linguist, speaking French, Spanish, Ital ian, German and English fluently. In his family he prohibited the use of ani mal food. All forms of religions nnd temples of devotion were sncred to him. and he never passed a church without baring bis head. Dciiino last autumn, sots the Journal of the Society of Arts, there were no less than seventeen companies engnged iu extracting gold from the auriferous sund of Fiulaud. The alluvial deposits at Toalo are said to be extremely rich in gold, the total production last season be ing estimated at about $50,000. One of the companies returned a dividend of 70 per cent. The largest nugget weighed 40 grammes. It is a mistake to expect to receive welcome, hospitality, words of cheer, and help over rugged aud difficult passes iu life, in return for cold selfishness, which cares for nothing in the world but self. . Souk men mourn that they have made and broken so many resolutions. It is sad that you have broken them, but thank Uod that you made them. God's image slumbers in our souls till sharp-edged grief cuts here and there, when, lo! the semblance of his form ap pears sculptured by the woea of time. Send disappointment to the winds: take life as it is, and with a strong will make it as near what it should be as possible. The human heart is made for love, as the household hearth for fire; and for truth, as the household lamp for light.
