EXPLORATIONS IX I'TAH AND
ARIZONA.
The Suit Lake Tribune of December 7
says of the discoveries made by the Bald
win Exploring Expedition: j
This expedition, which wiu organized
with Major M. A. Baldwin as chief, Tnos.
U. Blossom, E. M., as niiuerulogist and
Myfr, snd W. T. Broadmao, engineer,
lor tbe purpose of exploring the middle
uuJ southern portions of Utah, and the
northern part of Arizona, did not oonfine
its investigations to tbe mineral resources
of the country, bnt also made a complete
topographical examination of the region
passed over. During tbe progress of the
expedition a number of natural curiosi
ties were examined. On tbe west side of
San Pete Valley, at tbe base of a range
of mountains running parallel with it, a
xolid conglomerate wull, nearly Bix miles
in length, three hundred feet thick, a
hundred feet in height, and almost per
pendicular, was found. This natural
rampart extends across the country like
the work of some gigantic artisan, and
has several immense gateways opposite
the months of the canyons which de
bouch iuto tbe plain, and have evidently
cut through the obstruction. These open
ings lire from one hundred to two hun
dred feet in width, and present the ap
pfarnuce of entrances through an im
mense fortification. Between tbe wall
and the base of the mountains there
is a narrow plntean, and seen through
the gateways, tbe perspective triew
of the country ou either side, is
described as mngnitloent iu tbe ex
treme, ami entirely unique in its
cuaractrr. Scenery of a - remarkable
character is also found in the moun
tain around Coal Creek Canyon, near
liuriuouy, iu Inn county. The nioun
tuius are of bright red sandstone, and
nearly perpendicular, and five immense
projections upwards of 2,000 feet in
iiiK'bi, stand out like walls at regular
iutorvnls at right angles, forming, as it
were, six gigantic stnlls, against the side
of the mountain. These projections be
in ulso of red sandxtone, entirely bare
unil perpendicular, produce a startling
ttlVct, and constitute one of tbe wonders
iu the scenery of Southern Utah. Iu
fact, the members of the expediton speak
iu glowiug terms of tbe. natural attrac
tions of iron county, und predict that
wutu the county is opened by a ruilroud,
it will become an attractive placeof sum
mer resort. Perhaps the most remurk
able natnral discovery made by the ex
pedition was that of an ice spring iu a
burning desert. This Btrange pheuonie
nou is situated about eight miles west of
the town of Fillmore, in Millard county,
aud is located in a bed of lava which has
flowed from a volcano called Crater
Mountain, about four miles distant, but
whioh is now extinct. -The lava is from
ten to twelve feet thick, and very porous.
The spring is three feet in diameter, and
is surrounded by solid ice. On a hot
liny in August, whan the expedition vis
ited the spot, tbe thermometor on tbe
desert not twenty feet distant from the
spring stood at UK) degress, while the
water in the spring stood at freezing. It
is a matter of conjecture whether tbe ice
is formed by rapid evaporation of
water tnrougn tne porous lava, or
whether it is a winter ice deposit, pro
tected by the superincumbent lava
bed through the Bummer. The summit
of Crater Mountain is COO feet abova the
plain, aud itsform istbat of the frustrum
of a coue. Beveral of tbe members of
the expedition ascended to the top and
clambered down into the extinct crater
0:J0 feet or 30 feet below the level of tbe
plain at its base. There are marks of tri.
olent volcanio action everywhere, and tbe
lava flow has extended for miles over tbe
surrounding country. Tbe ascent of
Mount Nrbo was made by Major Bald
win, Mr. Blossom and two others. This
mountain, which is the highest in Utah.
ia in Juab county, is 11,865 feet high, aud
is covered with perpetual snow. The
party started upon the undertaking at 2
o clock one Saturday afternoon, with sad
dle aud pack animals, by way of North
Canyon, aud advanced as far as possible
for the animals, when they camped for
the night, and the next morning at three
o'clock proceded on foot. Upon reach
ing the summit the view afforded amply
rupum inein ior tueir labors. The whole
of Utah seemed mapped out at their feet.
Inward the East was beheld Ban Pete
and other valleys, and tba Wasatch
range, westward for a distance of nearly
two hundred miles tbe desert plains and
suit beds of Nevada were distinctly visi
ble, while to the north T'tnh t.a!ia und
Suit Lake glistened in the sunshine, and
ino range ot vision was only limited by
Promontory mountains. A complete
record of observations m
the progress of the expedition, with ele-
Timous, assays ot ores, natural features
and characteristics of tbe country, which,
when published, will reflect credit upon
the leaders of the expedition and contain
luvaluable information concerning the
cauud'es oi uian.

trained to comport themselves in the
most exact manner before company, and
to regard the promptings of their nature
as worthy only of repression and avoid
wee. Almost from tbe moment they
"?u 9 t0 toddle on their feet, the
children ot our middle and upper classes
are taught to behave in a constrained
and artificial manner. They walk, talk,
