jfDouulJ ia bis politic I views, and re
gard him BU m"'" oounsellor iu mat
ter! pertaining to tbe public welfure, we
neverlbrless consider bim one of the
must eloquent writers on tbe Pacific
canst iu treating of questions where no
feeling of partisanship is involved.
In tbe outset end during the progress
of tbe civil war Mr. McDonald wis con
nected with the war-press of the country
iui a writer, aud among tbe most ardent
advocates of the crusade against the
South. In bebalt of the decency of our
common human nature, we concede that
he then thought be was right that be
was enlisted in a just and holy enterprise
although we shall ever think he might
bure been less savage in his propositions
towards, and less cruel in his exultations
over tbe weakness of his Southern breth
ren. liut let all that pass. A few days ago
in tbe columns of tbe Transcript be ut
tered sentiments which go fur towards
earning him forgiveness from the people
be once so rutmessiy maligned. senti
mints alike indicative of clearness of
luiud and soundness of heart. Under the
caption "The Angel of lteconoilitttion"
lit nays of one of his blood-seeking arti
cles during the war, prefaced by tbe
couplet from Whittier
"The flaga of war like .torm-blrde fly.
The charging trumpet, blow!"
"We could not write it now, and never
nutit to sea it again. Since then, we
h ive been among the people who were
o fiercely denounced, have seen the
lnug, rank grass waiving over their house
hold desolations, and beard the dead
rebel's very "dog that whined in vain,
till fed by atramger hands," and we are
cured of our patriotic humanity. While
ntiiyiug a couple of weeks at a fashion-
blu resort in Missouri, corresponding
with our Calistoga, we law tbe rebel
wiJowa drooping ubout in their weeds,
accompanied by their forlorn little ones
with their childish semblances ol woe,
aud it was very pitiful. One little thing,
some four or five years old, aud as beau
tiful as tbe spirit of tbe day, was conspic
uous. With ber we contrived to make
friends, under tbe spreading walnut
trees of Arcadia, and at last she came
aud laid her tiuy, snow-white hands
upon ths stranger's knees, looked up
into his face with her great wide, deso
late eyes, with an inarticulate reproach
fullness, as though we bad slain her
father at Pea Kidga and buried him in
the bloody trenches. We are not ashamed
to say that this was more than human
nature could bear, ana we were giaa to
eet awav from that terrible judgment
bir. feeliDi; as thonub we could flins tbe
lacerating pen of the political journalist
into the flaming vortex of hell, and write
no more forever. All this, perhaps, was
an unsubstantial fancy, a fever-dream
under those sultry, brazen skies; but tbe
sad impression still lingers, and the
sweet, aconeatory face of that little one
stnuds out in relief on tbe walls of mem
ory, prophesying against cruel, curseful,
bereaving war.
"The people of thut great State at that
time cared nothing about Atlantic, and
Pacific railroads, and didn't want to bear
much about politics. They "wanted to
rehabilitate the country," tbey said;
wanted to get back their lost trade from
the Southwest, which tbe war had cut
off. They did not approve of any oourse
that was calculated to stir up old bitter
ness, but honestly, if not cheerfully, ac
cepted the award of the war's arbitration,
and wanted to be friends again. We are
glad to see this rational sentiment begin
ning to prevail in our own State, aud
that it is being judiciously inculcated by
their leading party journal. What had
been the present condition of England if
ths houses of York and Lancaster had
kept up their bloody fued to this day?
Nations, like individuals, are born to die,
and ours will undergo political trans
formation and perhaps extinction in the
far distant courBe of time, but there will
never be another civil war to establish a
slave-confederacy. Tbe stronger element
will overrun and absorb tbe weaker, as it
did in England, and the process is rapid
ly going on now.
" We have done, then, with tulking
about rebels, traitors, copperheads and
the like, and turn now to address tbe
American people, aa far as we can be
heard, impartially and respectfully, con
cerning the new questions that have
arisen since the wandering planets have
been re-collected and re-adjusted on their
orbits, and shall never again go back be
yond the landmark of established Peace.
When provoked to bitterness of recollec
tion, we shall recall to mind the Dead
Kebel b Child, with bar ureal, wide. won
dering eyei, and her air of unspeakable
desolation. May Ood keep tbe sweet
little preacher of forgiveness, and crown
her in her young womanhood with that
imperial oeauty, that spotless innocence,
which almost hallowed her childish face,
as she wandered about in melancholy
solitude amid the walnut urates of Ar
cadia. And if she shall ever be found
arooping on tbe blood-stained slopes of
Pea Ridge, searching in affection among
ths nameless grave lor one of the unre
corded dead, may the look from her
weeping to behold the friendly and be
nignant standard of her conntrv unfold
ing its splendors in the sun. and Hinging
protecting shadow all around her, and
fay to herself, It was but an incident of
heroic war; it was long, long ago; the
horrid Storm-birda have flown for inf.
