Much h9 been writ," bT ll su . 0( Europe in relation to the terrible rteiW ' opiniu smoking. American ' riteiS have also composed voiumiuoua ,ers npun the same subject. In all in tincao China is apokeu of aa that place er, the practice moat prevails. Per 7 m t,e Americana who have written ao " ' I, in relation to the matter are not ,r that in New York, the empire city f their country, there is aitnated an opium suioking Baloon, which, for dirt, sinwKir uil sliuiiuess. can well rank with til. most frequented dena of Canton. In Donovan's lune, a miserable little slley, opening from Baxter street, a room is k-i't particularly aud solely for the .ervice of opium awoken. It is con ducted by a withered old wreck, who, al though only forty years of age, by his in veterate use of the drug, has the appear auce of beiui; at least seventy. The rouin, if it can be culled such, is about twenty feet long by six wide; a slanting bi:rJ shelf is fixed lengthwise to one of the walls. This is long enough to allow n uiuu of small stature to lie at full length, but not more thau four persons couM lie on it at a time. It is upon this fhii the oniuin smokers recline when iu- dulgiug thi ir terrible longing. The place was visited a few evenings since, and was fomiil occupied by two Chinese, one of then) u very old mini, and the other a y .u'.b, who stated that he bad just been discharged from the Uuited States t,,imi'r Juniata, upon which be had Tvrd as officer's steward. Doth were niiokin2 omnm. Mmiv nersous suppose that opium is uJ iu me same wuy that tobacco is. This, however, is a luistaxe. aolmcco be smoked stundiog, wnlkiug aud ut basiuess. Thu opium smoker always Hhu down when indulging his habit, aud gives all his attention to the process of inhaling the fumes of the drug. Before opium can be used by the smoker it bus to be prepared most carefully by persons skilled iu its concoction. It is reduced fn iu a solid to a liquid form by boiling with a small quantity of water, aud when ready for the pipe looks like a thin paste ol thick, muddy molasses. The opium pipe coasists ot a reed about an inch in diiiuieter. The aperture in the bowl which admits the drug is not muoh larger than the head ot a pin. One hundredth part of an ounce ia all that can besmoked l.y a begiuner. Old, debauchees however, ciu use from a quarter to a third of an ounce daily. Tobacco smokers always emit smoke from their mouths, but an old opium smoker invariably blows he fumes through his uostrils, and very often absorbs them in his lungs. A to banco pipe can be easily lighted by a matoh or a coal of fire, but the opium nn.B must be Hunted with crest care, and always by the steady flame of an oil lamp. Tue small opening in the bowl is held in the Same, aud the light i drawn into the reel. After the opium ia ignit.d the process of smoking is a very short one; only one or two whiffs can be tsk.n, and in this way, lighting and smoking, scores of persons, inhabitants of this city, spend hour alter hour, never cussing until they drop off iuto the dsath-like stupor which is the aim of all opium smoking. Inveterate smokers live for nothing but the gratification of their appetitea. When it cannot be satisfied they suffer tortures of the most horrible character. Those persons who become addicted to the use of the poison seldom live to more than fifty years of age; most of them die within five years after they have reached that stage in which they can cousume a third of an ounce a day. The Chinese in this city admit tbat tue eiteots oi iue drug upon the Human frame are ruinous in the extreme; they argue, however, that all nations indulge in some aissipnviun, the Americans, they say, drink whiskey nutil they are drunk, and they ask, if this be so, why ia it wrong for a China man to become senseless with opium? Those who live in New York are, with few exceptions, devoted to the practice of opium-smoking, and, what is far more terrible, a large number of young white girls, residing in their neighborhood, are ripidly becoming addicted to the same vice. They live with the Chinese when they can dud no other home, for although the people of their own race close their doors against them, they are always wel come at the firesides of those to whom they sell their souls for the snstennnceof their bodies. Of course I was de lighted, and hugged and kissed him as any delighted little wile would, and in sardl rnanlYed to SO down town the ery next day and bny him a handsome pair of slippera. Two days, however, passed before I could manage it, but the third day found the slippers safely stowed away in my bureau drawer. After tea, whn T kn.w la waa in the sitting-room, I thmiotit now ia the time, when he will be missing bis aconstomed smoke, to surprise him with " token of bia wife's appreciation of bis self-denial." I had been mentally preparing my little speeoh all the afternoon: so. with the slippers in my hands snd my hands behind my back. I stole into the room. The back of bis chair was toward me, so my arms were around bia neck and the slippers in his lap before he was aware of my presence.
