For a week bis ybysiciaos bad essayed every snuwn remedy to put tuir patient to sleep, bat iu vain. Prentiss kuew that Fuoie bad oiada a visit to Texan. He was uursing bia sick friend wben a eon baltiitiou of tbe doctors vu beld, and they announced tbat tbe cae was hope less unless (be pulieut oonld be put to sleep, but Unit tLey would exhaust all the menus known to tbe profession, l'rmtiss sprung from bia aent and aaid to tbe doctors. "Damn it, give bim Foote'e lli on Texas to ead, aud I will insnre its soporific effect." Tbe remark of Preutiaa waa too good a joke to be kept, and it reached tbe Mrs of Foote, who challenged, and I'ri niiss whs too lunch of a Southern cavalier to decline, and they met and t'ootu was wonuded and the parties made friends. It happened tbat the meeting was so notorious tbnt a very large collec lion crossed tbe river at Vicksburg to vituiss it, among them a number of boys, who were so anxious to gtt a fall sight that tbey climbed up many trees .ibout the grounds. When tbe seconds had planted the parties, Prentiss looked mound nnd saw the boys in the trees, mid jestingly remarked, " Boys, you bad belter take cure; Foote shoots mighty wild." This remark was published iu the papers, and annoyed Foote to such a decree that bo again challenged l'rrntUs, who met bim a second time. At tbe meeting Foote fired and missed, and Prentiss fired bia pistol in tbe air, and the uiirtits were again reconciled. Paris Kentuckinn. Thk Wasuinotos Mondmsnt. Con gress bus beeu memorialized to appro priate funds to complete tbe Washington Munniuint. Some twenty-five years ago a very ambitious design waa adopted, aud a! out $100,000 expended, with the result of putting up a square abaft about one hundred feet high, having the outer ap pearance of a cross between a shot tower aud a foundry chimney. There the con cern has since remained, both to the amusement and amazement of strangers for a quarter of a century. And yet no project of the kind ever bad a better start. Census takers all over the Union took toll everywhere from the public pocket, and innumerable persons and Fourth of July celebrations made liberal contributions. It waa the general belief of the time that not lees than $1,000,000 were collected, of which it is supposed one-tenth was used ior the purpose for which it was given. No oue seems to kuow what became of tbe funds, or any II, in. t u nn the subiect. It was a good thing for some one while it lasted, aud if Pnnores. should make an experiment ot nationul funds, it would no doubt be a lv.it.-r one for some one else. We infer, indeed, that if a million a year were ap propriated, the shaft might in the course of one or two centuries, make an ap proach to completion. It has been a aink of all funds thus far given, and no doubt it would continue to be if the na tion has any more to spare just now. As a Government job the end of the world wonld come about tbe time the cup atone was put in place. It was to be five hundred feet high. PIOGHE DAILY RECORD. C. W.
