Tba New York Herald of the 11th instant, in an article entitled "Big Bon anzss" takes occasion to make some fry unfair and unmerited strictures on the mining enterprises of Nevada. Tail it a Terr common failing in the man of the Eastern papers, but one would bare thought that a journal of the ability, en terprise and fairness that usually charao terizes the Herald would not hare fallen into such a vnlgar error. The cause of the Herald's disparaging remarks appears to be the great deoline that has occurred in the shares of the Cotnstock compan ies. Cpon this hypothesis the Herald immediately lumps the legitimate mining undertakings of this State with the Diamond Swindle, the Emma mine in London, and other schemes of equally odious reputation. This is not fair or true. Mining enterprise in Nevada is as legitimate and honest a field of ex ertion as any other reputable business can possibly be. True, from its very na ture it is subject to many sudden and unexpected changes and chance enters largely into it as an element of success or the reverse, yet one would think that ought not to place it within the category of swindling schemes. Shares in a mine may go np or down, depending upon the favor which they find in the public mind, but neither elevation or depression makes the mine a swindle. The mine on the Comstock are pouring out steady stream of bullion, which is only calculated by millions. Surely thst evi denee should be sufficient of the realty of the bonanza. The Herald moreover shows its absolute ignoranoe of the main faots of the subjeot, for it calls the bo nanza "a gold mine," wbioh is about all the knowledge it evinoes of the matter. The authorities of Alameda recently constructed a fire-proof vault, whereupon a citizen of that county quietly steps in aud calmly acquaints the Board of Super visors that the vault is his and asks tbem to deliver possession forthwith. The Chlouicle says that the visit and de mand acted like a surprise party on the Board. Tbe passengers of the steamer Los Angeles which was lying in a helpless condition on the eoast of Oregon, passed a vote of thanks to Captain J. Howell, tor his bravery In leaving the vessel in a small boat, reaching ths shore and send' ing a steamer to the relief of the Los Angeles. Tbe San Franoisoo Chronicle can find nothing better to do than ridicule the poem read at tbe Sacramento celebra tion of St. Patrick's Day. One would have thought that the good taste of the Chroniole would have prevented it from making any ill remarks concerning such efforts. Ths Newburyport silver vein is creat ing quite a fever in that locality, and lands in the neighborhood that v. esteemed worthless and scarcely worth having, have suddenly jumped from few dollars to $2000 per acre. Mr. Hammond the revivalist, thinks that Vasquez has found Jesns. That is well, but it would have been better bod ths bandit been converted before the Tres Pinos and other affairs of a like character .occurred. The San Francisco Call says that tbe Ohio election next fall will sound the key note of the Presidential campaign of 187C. On ths old Overland road tbete is a station called Cape Horn, now ust d by the Austin and Eareks stage line. Tbe hostler there is troubled with impeenni out tramps and thus melodiously be wails bit misfortunes, which we extract from ths Eureka Sentinel : Cava Hoax, Much 1C, 18:5. There is no use in talking. Ton can't drive tbem swsy, They get here shout night. And till morning will stsy. Now, they will ssy in tbe morning When ready to go, I'll see you some time. And I'll pay wbst I owe. Now, it is all very fine. But it won't keep a hotel; It would soon burst a man up, And send him to h i. Mrs. McKenzie, who abont two years since eloped from San Francisco with Tyler Curtis, died miserably in New York a few days ago. John Mitchel was buried at Newry, Ireland. Tbe telegrams say that not less than ten thousand persons attended the funeral. let. About one of the cheekiest plundering schemes ventilated lately was essayed by the "Land Association of Philadelphia." This company was silly enough to purchase what was known as ths Santillan Grant, which covered tbe wnole of tbe site of the city of San Fran cisco. Ths pretended "grant" was of course nothing but a swindle from begin ning to end, and was very justly defeated in the Courts. After the legal contest was decided tbe Land Association actu ally had the impudence to go before Con gress aud ask to be reimbursed the ex penses incurred in the attempt to rob the land owners of San Franoisco of their " urVLrast. s.uvwM...aM w - - it shows the opinion that some people have of the good sense and honesty of tbe late Congress that they presumed to insult the national Legislature by prefer ring to preposterous a claim. A number of men are engaged at Vallejo preparing the Jamestown for a training and school ship. It is taid that Canada is endeavoring to purchase Alaska from the United States Government. Tbe people of Sontbern California ask that a military post sbsll be established at San Diago. Mr. William Pearson showed us yes terday some very handsome specimens of sulphnr from tbe newly-discovered mine in Wynooop Canyon. Tbe per centuge of sulphnr land is said to be very great. Tbe extent of tbe deposit is s mere matter of oonjectnre at present. Besides these specimens were some very peculiar and beautiful crystalizations of a yellowish tinge, long and very delicate, and prismatic in form. These seem to be partly composed of sulphur. Tibubcio Vasqcez. lbs Cential Pacific Railroad Company bat declared a dividend of six per cent. on itt capital ttock. This suggests the conundrum: Why does not tbe Hail' road Company liquidate its debt due the Government? Those big railroad men want to be tanght the first principles of oommon honesty. In order for that to be done a different tort of a man from Webfoot Williams must have conduct of the proceedings instituted against them. By tbe Fanamint News of tbe 10th we see that a fire took place there destroying property to the value of some (3000 or (4000. Tbe News says that Mrs. Christy, well known in Pioche, has lost some thing in damage to her house and remov ing bedding, furnitnre, &a but to what extent is not yet known, Before his death Vasquez addressed a communication to hit former associates, in which be earnestly urges them to quit their evil wsy, citing his own miserable fate as a warning and assuring tbem they will oome to tbe same terrible end if they do not speedily reform. It is this: Neither id wishes to coll Bowen. for tbe reason that both sides are anxious to have the nrivilroa of cross-examining him. It is fur this reason that there is so much nlavina around bim. It is on Ibis ae- Knnni that tba ODDOsine counsel working sharply again, each other in re o.r.l tn him.
