THE LYON COUNTY TIMES
The Young Man Who w as “ Figg ing the Fleas." Last evening a young man called to see a Republican reporter. He wanted to see him bad. The young man had business with him. He said he was the carpenter ol the Comique. He was excited. His eves were in a fine frenzy rolling, and so was the tobacco juice, which ho distributed around like a garden squirt without recourse. He was an able-bodied young man, and he looked mad all over. He said he wanted to see the Republican report er who wrote an article about the gallery “fighting the fleas.” He wanted to put a head on that report er. He thought another head would set him up A mild mannered young man who does the first class murders and ro mantic suicides ventured to remark to the exasperated carpenter that if injustice had been done him he should have a column or two of edi torial all to himself, by way of apol ogy. No trouble to show goods in the Republican. “Looky’ eer,” said the carpenter, “do I look like fleas, say? Is that any way to treat a gentleman, when he's jist takin’ a snooze, to say lies’ fighting fleas? Say, where’s the gay galoot as slung fleas at me? Oh tell me when and tell me where that I may kiss him tor his mother. Are vou the moke as wrote it?” The mild mannered young man who looks after the murders hast ened to remark, that he was not. The gentleman assigned to fleas was un fortunately out just then on some church business, and would not be in until next weex. “Who’s on the muscle about here, anyhow? Trot out your Mollie Mc Cooles,” exclaimed the carpenter; “I’m bound to get hunk on fleas with somebody. I'm a quiet man, I am. and I don’t bother witli any body's fleas; but when you put fleas on me I’m all there. You say you’re not the fellow as wrote them fleas?” “Certainly not,” said the reporter. “Perhaps' the feller as did is a friend of yourn?” “Well, yes, a friend of course—oh yes.” “Perhaps you wouu’t mind me handing you one under the ear for j hint when he comes back next week from church.” The mild mannered reporter j thought he would have a very great j objection, but if be would wait lie would see where the error was. The reporter went out and short ly returned with the copy. There it was, sure enough—“fighting the fleas.” The nice distinction didn’t seem to strick “the young man bred a carpenter, only nineteen years old.” He was represented as fight ing the fleas, and it didn't seem to matter much to him who did it. There it was in print. If it wasn’t the reporter, who was it that said fleas? Oh, only just show him the man. Well, condemn and sink an office that don’t keep a man on hand to do the fightin'. As he couldn’t get a fight on them fleas out of any body he would take an editorial by way of apology, and if anybody said fleas once to him after that there d be a sweet case of sarcophagus for one, and he (the exasperated car penter) would ante up the corpus. And this is the editorial by way i of explanation about “them fleas.” —St. Louis Republican. “ I’m glad that this coffee don’t owe me anything,” said Brown, a boarder, at the breakfast table. “Why,” said Smith. “Because I don’t believe it would ever settle.” “ Are there any fools in this town,” asked a stranger of a news boy, the other day. “ I don’t know,” replied the boy, “ are you lonesome ?” Union Market!
