The most practical Fall suits are made of French all wool berege. or some of the pretty woolen diagonals In iron gray and dark shades of brown. They have no trimming escept a a lining of silk which shows as a facing in collar, cuffs and basque, but they are very useful, and *re accompanied by a felt hat matching the shade and trimmed with folds of silk and the wing of a game bird. The usual style of making is a walking skirt, trimmed with plaited flounces, apron overskirt and basque, often sideplaited, too. There are new ways of arranging two kinds of materials in a suit; for instance, the three front breadths will be plaid, and the three back ones a plain color; or the front half will be mate lame silk, while the back la three Widths of plain silk held in a great quadmbl* pleat fwm the belt to the ground; or else the front is camel’s-hair, and the back is silk of the same shade. In most oases the back widths are without horizontal trimmings, flounces, etc., although such orna ment may be abundant in front. Two shades in costumes are given by employing two mate rials rather than by Afferent shades of the same fabrick. Cuirasses with tabliers are the conspicuous rcsturcs or tnc new costumes, yet there mre also many polonaises. The ten dency is toward plain style and rich materials. Many skirts have no flounces behind, but hung in classic fulds from waist to foot, while others are draped to lixik aa bouffant aa they were in the days of Grecian bend. Fashion journals assert pusitivi ly that plaids, checks and crus*, bars will lie revived next season; last Spring that twilled silks of such patterns were im ported by leading modistes : but tile supply was small, and was s<xm exhausted by leaders of fashion who have appeared in these dresses at the Summer resorts. Whether they will be popularized in the Fall, and become generally worn, yet remains to be seen. co.uHrxicvrioM. Editor Times: Sir:—Seing a no tice in your issue of September 10th, in regard to the Babcock Fire Extin guisher Company, I wish to make a true statement of facts in regard to the Company: On or about the 27th day of June last, a meeting was held at Armory Hall, under a call from r>. C. McDuffiie, for the purpose of organizinga Fire Company (who had already purchased a Babcock Fire Extinguisher, hook and ladder truck, and hail the apparatus already in Town). At this meeting a Company was organized, and permanent offi cers for the term ot six months elected, without a dissenting voice, Mr. McDuffie being present at that meeting. At a subsequent meeting a building committee of three were appointed, for the pur [wise of having a building put up suitable for the Company’s use, Mr. McDuffie being one of that committee. A contract wax let and a building erected, Mr. McDuffiie having shown to the Com pany that he had sufficient money subscribed to pay all indebtedness contracted, amounting to some }160n or ?1700. When the building was finished the Company held a meeting, and ordered a warrant drawn for the amount due the car penters, amounting to $175, which amount had heen collected and was in the hands of Mr. Rosenthal 1, the Company's treasurer; but Mr.McDuf fie forbid Mr. Rosenthal to pay any money until he told him to do so, so we could not get possession el the building to house the apparatus. The Company being unable to get any satisfaction from Mr. McDuffie, ap pointed at this same meeting a col lecting committee; Mr. McDuffie not being present, but through some one he heard that the Company had appointed the committee. Mr. Mc buffle and Mr. Rosenthal, started out the same night and forbid any | one paying money to the Com pany’s committee. It will be impos sable for the Company to amount to anything for service as long as one ■"an has the power, and ignores the "ill of the majority. The engine house has been completed over two "moths and still the Company have "ot got possession, and the apparatus l*ys out exposed to actiou of tho ele ments. It hardly looks reasonable ■be property holders and citizens subscribed their money to be thus us«d by Mr. McDuffie. According to Mr- McDuffie’s statement the appa mtua cost some $850, but the Cora P«ny could never get a statement ,r°m him of what he had collected, or what he had done. I write this statement so that the citizens may Pl*ce the blame were it belongs. John C. I.econey, a... Foreman, Slaver Star Babcock H. A L.
