SILVER CITY, NEVADA, OCT. 22,1874. NO. 48. Lega* bi^ks, TOM TV 1*0. BY E. NORMAN GUNNISON, Tom Typo was a printer’s lad, Bound tn the good old way ; And wheu he’d served his seven years, The devil was to pay. So when his boss had paid him off, To put himself to proof He swung his bundle, to his stick, And left his master's roof. He started in on odils and ends Pt-rtaining to his trade ; Tor well he knew that much depends On first impressions made. Where duty called him he was found, SMI working in his place ; He stood while setting up a job, Which really was the case. He never swerved an inch from rules. To make his matter fat; But spared life's panifrraphs, that fools Might never scoff thereat. In course of time his honest heart 'Twined round a muslin dress, And as the wearer was agreed, Their fond lips went to press. He married rretty Emma Grey, With many haws and hems ; This little joke he used to say : “He’d like ten thousand cm." Sweet Emma proved to honest Tom A true and faithful wife. And freely was admitted to The sanctum of his life. Time’s roller passed across life’s bed But never inked Tom’s wealth ; His troubles bore a ilnuhledead; Still he composed—himself. And so he kept his pages clear And grew to be a type Of all that manhood holds most dear Wheu Tom with age was ripe. At last, when came the final rest, Without one sigh or moan He said : "My friends, above my breast Place no imposing stone.” He made bis last impression here. While yet his heart was warm ; Just hi the nick closed his career, And death locked up bis form. JSrll Arxl. Here lies a printer—many & tear In Borrowing eyes shall swell: For though he handled much brevier His life was nonpariel. Copy his virtues. In the land Which gave to him his birth ; When such ethhon* are worked off. We lose the Ralt of earth. —Xew York Clipper. The Price of Life in Sicily.— A letter from Sicily to the London Times contains the following: A young captain, Filomeno Genova by name, was quartered with his regi ment, the Twenty-second Infantry, at Messina. In his rambles through the town "he often observed, and was observed by a young lady at the window of one of the houses. After a short time Captain Genova re ceived a basket of fruit from the fair incognita, in return for which he sent flowers and sweetmeats, and, as a matter of course, presented himself to her family, but when matrimony was spoken of it appeared that the damsel had no fortune beyond her face. On this the captain withdrew his pretensions, on the plea that ho was not rich, and that his pay was insufficient to justify him in taking a wife, and so matters went no fur ther. Early in the course of last month the young lady heard that her lover was about to leave Messi na. “ On what day do you start?” she asked him. Ho told her, inquir ing at the same time why she de sired to know. “That I may give you a keepsake you will never for get," she is reported to havo replied. A few mornings before that fixed tor ins departure Captain Genova was walking on tlio seashore, when he was suddenly stabbed in the sido. He turned upon his aggressor, and pursued him till he took refuge in a modisto’s shop, where ho was cap tured. The captain, covered with blood, was taken to the hospital, where, after a few days, he expired, his poor mother, who was looking forward to his return, telegraphing three times a day for news of his state. The assassin confessed to having reeeivod only 25 lire for his work of blood. Thebe aro some prejudices which, though destitute apparently of any reasonable foundation, are too deep ly rooted in the human mind to be easily overcome. Among these is the prejudice which associates the weight of an argument or the sound ness ot an opinion with the moral character of the writer by whom 4 is put forth. Yesterday’s dispatches state that a Oerman house at Leipsic, which had commenced publishing a translation of the tlrst volume of Beecher’s “ Life of Christ,” has abandoned the enterprise on account °f the Plymouth Church scandal. “Fred, how is your sweetheart?” “pretty well, X guess; she says I needn’t call any more.” Those who have tried it say that hissing is like a sewing machine, because it seems good.
