I CIRCULARS, LABELS, One Copy, Six Months. 0 00 - MILl BLANKS RECK TS VOL. 2.SILVER CITY, NEV„ JAN. 17, 1875._ NO • 6 . I LEGAL BLANKS, ETC. I,filer Frum Nan Francisco. San Francisco, Jan. 13,1875. Dear Times:—We are waiting for the fog to clear away, to see what time of day it is in San Fran cisco. It has been so cold and gloomy here, we find ourselves in the blues, humming doleful airs to lceep our courage up, and wonder ing what is going to happen. The fog whistle, night and day, gives us intimation of danger ahead somewhere, and we begin more fully to realize that life is not all sunlight. The state of the stock market is the great excitement. Everybody wonders if the fabulous stories are true; if solid masses of silver are really in sight; and, in fact, when Consolidated Virginia is going to disgorge whole silver tea services, not yet manipulated by human hands, but worked into most art istic shapes by nature, in the bow els of the earth. Everybody is ready to believe everything, and the more glowing accounts that can be sent us from Nevada, the more capacious will become the realms of imagination, in each man’s mind, to reach the reality. I, Cyn thia Ann, whose small revenue comes always in silver, am only fearful that the time is coming when silver shall be such a drug in the market, that lots of tin, in any other shape, will be preferable, and feel inclined to believe that to keep up a state of pretension in that aristocratic metal, it will finally become necessary, for successful stock manipulations, to shut up that for a time, to allow that already in circulation to wear itself out, before more thousands of tons aro brought to light. We'are going to have a Califor nia representative in Washington this winter, in the person of Mrs. Jones, nee Sullivan. I hope her poor head will not be turned by ovation, and that croaking old maids, like myself, will not have the opportunity of saying “ I told you so,” should it prove that it had. It is a hard place, that polit ical city, for anybody to enter; and “ deliver us from temptation,” might, with propriety, be written upon the walls in all directions. To be the wife of a rich man is one temptation; to be the wife of one in power another; and poor little Mrs. Jones will need the prayers of all her relatives to keep her from falling into the notion that she is not herself—a superior being— indeed, very much, and more so, if toad eaters and pol iticians can do their best to spoil her. Her quiet, sensible wedding, gives us some hope that the worthy Senator's good sense will prove her best protection, and that our little native-born Californian may return to our State to set a good example to the leaders of snobbery and fashion, which we have “ ad nauseam." The health of the city at present is the subject of anxiety. More deaths have occurred the past week than ever before in the same space of time without an epidemic, and if rumor tells the truth, it is very sickly. Fair weather and sun S-iine, followed by fog, has upset everybody, and all the world at present is like the rich man asking of the beggar in Abraham’s bosom, thinking of water. There is noth ing more likely to do mischief than the want of rain in a California community. How is it in Nevada? Nevada mines are making us prosperous, if one can judge from the erection of new buildings. In ull localities, possible and impos sible, one sees signs of a movement in real estate. Before the report of that little nugget, discovered in California, there seemed a possi bility of a pretty extensive rise, but when people sell olT the family utensils, take the bed from under them, and depend only on blankets for their night’s comfort, to have money to put into stocks, it is not likely real estate is going to find many purchasers; but when they have realized, then we shall see some fine building. As it is, every-1 body is waiting till everybody lias realized, before anybody can get tlieir pay. “Its a long lane that has no turn,” and of course, in time, “ the butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker,” will come in for their share of the benefit, and Flood and O’Brien, patron saints of California, will be duly and formally canonized. Till then, Requiescat. Cynthia Ann. A lady on the cars dropped some thing from her head, and remarked it was a railroad accident, a misplac ed switch.” KRIUJAXTS. TO BABTE BESSIE. From thee ami thy innocent beauty. First came the lesson; And it taught me to love, to adore— To feel thy bright presence, And turn with shame [before. From the idols I blindly had knelt to O’er the waves of life. Long blighted and wild, Thou cam’st, like a soft, golden calm, Coming from over the sea; [smiled And if happiness purely and glowingly On my eveniug horizon, / The light came from thee. COMFORT IN PARTING. When friend from friend is parting, And in each speaking eye The silent tears are starting, To tell what words deny, How could we bear the heavy load Of suel^heart agony, Could we not cast it all, our God, Our gracious God, on Thee; And feel that Thou kind watch will keep Wheu we are far away; That Thou wilt soothe us when we weep, And hear us when we pray?
