Wil«l Scene in the 1Ioiin<>. [1 be Col. Stevenson referred to in the following, which we clip from tho Idaho Statesman of a recent date, is Speaker of the Idaho House of Representatives, and a brother of Hon. C. C. Stevenson, President )>ro tern, of the Senate of Nevada. It will bo seen that he is a “ chip off tho old block:"] On Wednesday, Mr. Paddock in troduced a resolution as an addition to the standing rules of the House, tho substance of which was to ex clude divorce bills from being intro duced, to tho exclusion of more im portant business. After rather a warm debate the resolution was adopted. Before, however, the vote was declared, Anderson, who had voted against excluding divorce bu siness, changed his vote to the affir mative, and, when the vote was de clared, gave notice that ho would on to-morrow (Thursday) move a re consideration. The bill to dissolve the marriage relations between Lydia Ann Patten and her husband was then taken up, read a third time and placed upon its passage. Here the .speaker called Mr. buney to the chair, and, having taken the floor, said that ttie number of divorce cases that were being pressed upon the House, to the exclusion of more im portant business, was becoming a nuisance, and that he was himself heartily tired of them, and would vote against any more being granted. He proceeded to say that members had been annoyed by divorce hunt ers and their counsel so much, that they could not attend to their more important duties, and that some lilt'll! These remarks caused quite a sensation, four or five of the divorce members jumping up at once, crying “Mr. Speaker! Mr. Speaker!" The Speaker ruled that “Stamp” Anderson had the floor. “Stamp” proceeded to deny the charge of swapping his vote, and said Mr. Stevenson's remarks were false. Anderson sits down. Where upon “Mr. Speaker! Mr. Speaker!" was again heard from six or eight parts of the hall.. The Speaker, Mr. I,utiey, ruled that Mr. Stevenson had the floor, whereupon Mr. s. pro ceeded to state that Anderson had informed him that he (Anderson) had to vote for the Sell liable divorce bill, to get the divorce hill he had intro duced through the Council—and if that did not mean swap, he did not know what language meant. Mr. Stevenson sits down, and “ Mr. Speaker! Mr. Speaker!" is again heard from various corners ot the hall. The Speaker ruled that An derson had the floor, whereupon Anderson, in his usual wild and in coherent manner, attempted to ex plain away the remarks made by Mr. Stevenson, as to his being obliged to vote tor one bill in order to get votes for another, and closed by blubber ing out that Col. Stevenson was mis taken, and sat down amid cries of “Mr. Speaker!” repeated simultane ously from divoree members. The Speaker ruled that Mr. Stevenson had the floor. Several members re mained standing, claiming the right to he heard, while Mr. Stevenson re peated the language used by Mr. A., to the effect that he was obliged to vote for the Sehnable hill, to get votes for the bill he was going to in irouuce. me scone now oceanic one of contusion. Several mem bers, thinking they had been aimed at by Mr, Stevenson’s remarks. Amid the contusion the House adjourned, and tho scene was then beyond description, several divorce members surrounding the Col., and claiming amends for personal in sults. The Col. manfully stood his ground ; said ho was responsible for what he said, and that “ none need wear tho cap unless it lit him.” During the hubbub, Anderson said that if any one made use of tho expression that he had sold himself it was a lie; whereupon Colonel Stoveuson went for him, saying, “ You are one of those fire-eaters, are you ?” At this “Stamp” craw fished, and said that “ if any one said ho sold his vote was lie able to bo mistaken. This remark doubt less saved poor “Stamp’s” bacon, and he wandered about the hall like a whipped cur, and will ever carry tho brand “Stamped” upon him by Col. Stevenson—“ Of a Legislative Swapper.” When a good wife had prepared an excellent dinner for her hus band, and he declared he was pleased with it, she said. “Well, kiss me, then.” “Oh. never mind that, my dear,” was his reply; “the necessaries of life we must have, but the luxuries we eau dispense with.” A little girl, having noticed that after her mother’s toilet there was a sprinkling of powder on tho carpet, observed on seeing tho snow, “Sec, mamma, the angels have been using the poutlre dc viz," BEER BROS.
