NO. 49. “IJ^al^ISi^mT* San Francisco Letter. [Special CurreniKimlenoe of the Time*.] San Francisco, April 24, 1875. Dear Times:—Tho lovers of the Elysian climate of San Francisco are having their fill of some of its beauties. Wind, diist and fog, one and all combined, in tho daily 'circuit, have filled tho hearts and minds of our citizens with anxious torebodings of what is to eotno in the future. Our worst summer month, of August, being rivalled in its severity by tho usually milder one of April. All the dust in the city has done its best to develop tho antagonistic qualities of tho human species, who fight their way up the hills, with the wind battling them back, as well as it is able, and tho mighty fog which lias rolled in to cover up the city, lias hardly been equalled by the general gloom which has seemed to force itself in spite of tho opposition of most of our inhabitants. Nobody seems particularly festive during these seasons of atmospheric contentions, and tlie fact that tho revivals have ended, or that their chief light lias faded, in the departure of Ham mond, does not greatly help ns, for as yet no excitement is taking its place. The reverend brethren had a love feast at the Lick House, given to Brother Hammond, where the feast of reason and How of sottl, mingling with the sentiments of “ Hark, from the tomb a doleful sound,” could not have been to other than, themselves particularly jolly. However, it they were satis fied, it is nobody’s business, and with tlie hope that the rev. gentle man has enjoyed himself among us, lie is hidden farewell. Professor Lavender, a self-right eous, self conceited sort of an ap pearing individual, endeavored to make some capital for the free thinkers, by bringing himself into conspicuous opposition to tlie Rev. Hammond; hilt his efforts availed him nothing, for the hulls and bears of California street, despite their hardness of heart in some particu lars, determined to hear what good they could for themselves in the way of salvation, vice versa hell and damnation, wouiii not bear a word from tlie man who promised to save them, through thoir own way of very free thinking, and the air odorous with tlie breath of Lav ender, became unchanged shortly after, with a very different sort of perfume, for the market being at hand and rotten eggs abundant, Lavender beat a retreat with his wagon, and tlie good people went on with business. “ Elaine ” lias retired to privacy, and the amount of money collected by its exhibition having been fairly distributed in various charities, was very considerable,. Launcelot must have been somewhat disgusted at being followed to the castle by the dead body of his love rejected, and it would be only fair now to tho queen to make the reception the subject of a painting, and some of our native artists may possibly be induced to try their hand at a pic ture of this novel way of righting one’s self after death, in a com panion piece, bearing the queen in tho fore ground, Launcelot beside her, and the corpse appearing. Tennyson may then again bo im mortalized in painting as well as in poetry, and the sister arts find them selves still more in harmony. We are going to have nothing, that is known at present, to make it worth while lor tho people ot Neva da to make a visit to San Francisco; nevertheless, we shall bo happy to see them, in view of the bonanzas • we hope are to be discovered by some of your prospectors. If none aro handy, a few manufactured ones f might answer tho purpose, after a little, to get up tin excitement. t Something has got to be done, for things look lamentably dull, and | when Sharon returns to his “ inout ons," otherwise his mines, his poek * ets will be so empty Irotn Washing ton expenditure, lie at least will i doubtless make an ell'ort; but it the mountains labor and bring forth only a mouse from time to time, woe to the speculators, for their stars must set, aud Sharon and j Jones and Flood aud O’Brien will have to retrench—live within small means, and take out lito in a vory small way, in some humble man sion, with very poor accommoda tions for twenty persons instead of fifty; thoir horses be condemned to the-use of silver harness instead of | golden, and four and twenty dollars i serve for their daily dinner expen % diture instead of a hundred. This j must never be; we must keep them 11 p to the mark ; they must find ' bonanzas, if nobody else does, and our people must be glad to see the show which all this wealth is giving to San Francisco. It will never do to fail back from our palatial friends in this way; they must be kept up; and when the news of a fresh bo Inanza in one mine makes its appear ance, everybody must buy into others which may have bonanzas, but which at any rate will result in very substantial ones to our patrons of art in San Francisco—our palace builders. Let us have a bonanza— and then, perhaps, we can live, as our once bare footed little girl from the mountains now does, with her gorgeous carriage and liveriod ser k vants—nine for four people—eight courses at dinner, white-gloved waiters, hot-house bouquets at each plate, for every-day family use; illuminated pyramids of ice, and decorations of confectionery, Fourth of July celebrations in eating all the time, and dyspepsia to follow—who would not have a bonanza ? and who would then care whether school keeps or not.
