Father Bertelli, an Italian monk, for several years past has mado a study of the tremblings of the earth, and more especially those which are so extremely slight as not to be per ceptible, save by pendulums placed in the fields of microscopes. In one year he recognized 5,500 of these movements; and graphically repre senting the same over many years by a curve, he finds that the line corresponds neither with the thor mometric curve 'nor with the tidal phenomena, nor can it be brought into any relation with the distances ■or' V®s*B°hs' of the sun or moon. ~With the barometric curve, however, it is otherwise; and it appears that, in the large majority of cases, the in tensity of the movements augmented with the lowering of the barometric column as if (as the investigator slates) the gaseous masses imprison ed in the superficial layers of the earth escaped more easily when the weight of the atmosphere dimin ished. Important to Litigants.—Judge Cole, of this Judicial District, has already made a couple of rulings •which all litigants would do well to observe. The White Pine News thus alludes to the subject: “ At the last term of the District Court here, his Honor Judge Cole gave as his decision that in all cases tried before a Justice of the Peace, it is absolutely necessary to file a cost bond, duly verified as the law re quires, within two days after the rendition of the Judgment, and upon failure to do so the party en titled to cost cannot recover. the same in the Court below on an appeal. This decision is in accordance with law, but has here tofore been overlooked or disre garded in many instances. This rule applies to the cost bill of the Sheriff or Constable, as well as to the parties of the action. Another important rule was made in regard to keepers’ fees. No fees will be allowed in cases where the property attached or levied on, under execu tion, is not perishable and can be stored ; the cost of removal and storage will only be allowed.”— ,[ Eureka Sentinel. Promising Miners.—Messrs. Duf fy, Benton, anil other Carsonites, have located two mines in Mason’s Pass, Neileigli district, Lyon county, and filed articles of incorporation of -companies formed to work the same in the office of the Secretary of State, ;yesterday, says the Carson Appeal I •ofSunday. These are respectively styled the Surprise Consolidated Gold, Silver and Copper Mining Company, and tho Blue Beil Consoli dated Copper Mining Company. We were yesterday shown some certifi cates of assays from the Surprise mine. They show the ore to bo par ticularly rich in gold and the assays >un from $284 to $482 to the ton. This is very rich and there’s no won der that these gentlemen are very confident of having found a hand some thing. Chicago, May 24.— A Washing ton special says the reason the tiioux Chiefs, now in that city, changed hotel yesterday, was that the TremonljHouse, where they were •quartered, is a temperance hotel, mid the noble red men were deter mined not to stay where they could get no Whisky.* There is a proba bility that the stay of the Indians in Washington will be prolonged a •week or two on account of the ab sence of “ Man - Afraid - of - his Horse,” without >vhom negotiations for the cession of the Black Hill ter ritory, it is believed, would fail. ’The absent Chief has been tele graphed for. Chicago, May 24. — Sherman’s memoirs are creating a sensation among army officers, whose record in the late war he is said to criti <ciie with great freedom and some (severity. Montgomery Blair is out, in a letter defending his brother, Gen. Frank P. Blair, against Sher man’s aspersions, and attacking Sherman himself. It is stated that ;Sherman has been offered 860,000 by the Appletons for the copyright .of his book. J. C. Geer, ox-U. S. Revenue (Collector for Boise oity, Idaho, has been arrested as a defaulter to the Government, in amount of nearly 822,000. ___ The residence of Wm.
