Oar patrons and the pnblic gen erally who have identified them selves with the mines and mining interests of this end of the Gom- ' stock, will be gratified to learn that our Lyon County locations are just now receiving more marked and favorable attention in Kan Fran cisco than ever before. This ^hte ment is based upon numerous in- j terviews with prominent stock dealers and mining speculators of that city within the past ten days by our associate editor, who retnrns ■ from his visit greatly pleased at the present Kan Francisco complexion of Lyon County mining interests. Time was, and not long ago, either, j that it was only necessary to men tion at “ the bay” that a mine was situated below Gold Hill to have it sneered at as “ wildcat” and worth less. For years the superstitious and foolish doubt has lingered with prominent speculators in that money centre, that the genuine Comstoc^ vein was cramped to the narrow confines of the now “bo nanza” and Gold Hill mines. To remove this prejudice has taken much theoretical as well as active, i systematic work. It has taken years ; ofmuscle-wear, the expenditure of , much money, and the erection of; powerful machinery for prospecting j purposes. But it has been, and is j fast being removed. Stock operators j and mine purchasers are l»eginning to have a doubt now as to which end of the great lead will eventually prove the greater in the production of the precious metals, and no longer speak disparagingly of such mines as the Justice, Silver Hill, Niagara, Buckeye, Kossuth, Dayton, Amazon and Glasgow, Daney, Silver Central, and the many other prominent loca tions of this section. Per contra, much interest is taken in the pro gress of the respective developments and a watchful eye is kept upon those most advanced in improve ments. With the eagle eye of San Francisco capital constantly keeping tally of the good and adverse re ports of these mines, it needs but the “striking” (and clear demon stration of the fact) of a single vein of good paying ore on this end of the Comstock lode to place every prominent mine in Lyon County on the Stock Board at good figures. Does anyone at all acquainted with the actual status of the mines that we have mentioned doubt that such a body of ore will boou be struck—if IT HAS HOT BEEN STRUCK ALREADY? We do not at this time deem it wise to particularise more fully than to say that it is our firm belief that such a body of ore to-day lies un covered in the depths of at least two mines on this end of the Comstock ledge. Furthermore, we very firmly believe that the events of the next sixty days will place the stock of several of thG mines in this county at figures that will astonish and gratify even the most sanguine. With such a sure belief as this, we can but feel proud of our county’s mineral wealth, and ex .end greeting to those who have labored so long and faith fully in bringing it about. Thb Salt Lake “Tribune” thinks that the practice of permitting con vict* to escape from the Penitentiary at that place is becoming monoto nous, as it becomes necessary to re cord the surreptitious departure of “ Dublin Tricks ” from that institu tion. 11 Dublin ” was in, for services rendered as road agent, and was re garded ar a regular boarder. A joc-coio Bud Francisco friend ■ays the reason that all Irishmen ad mire the Safe Deposit building so much is becanse it’s built of sham rock. Jeejo! Db. Ifa| loaded went and very light on THE KINGS OF THE TL'fiF. Grinstead and Wlldldl*. One of the moet interesting trials of speed between running horses that has occurred on American soil for years, was the great four mile dash at the San Francisco race couise on last Saturday, between the famous horses, Revenue, Jr.. AV ild idle, Grinstead and General Sherman, for a purse of $1,500. Of the horses named hut one was bred in California, General Sherman, an own brother to the game and hon est Phil. Sheridan, that l>eat Nell Flaherty and Dcmorcst three years ago. He is a plain looking bay colt, like most of the Norfolks, about loj hands high, and has but little of the aristocratic look of the Belmont family about him. He was bred anil is owned by William Meek, of San Leandro, and was not trained to run until tais Fall. Ilis actual time in the race was 7:40, no mean perform- j ance for a green and awkward colt, j as he was in July. He was well rid- j den by George Ilowsou, carrying 02 pounds. Revenue, Jr., is a Virginia bred horse, owned by a gentleman of Den ver, Colorado. Revenue was a very small, but game and resolute, runner, owned by lion John Minor Botts. or Culpepper, Virginia. This son of his is a horse of great beauty, but was too high in flesh to run over a mile and repeat in any good com pany. His head and neck are tine enough for Thad. Stevens, while his barrel shows good breathing power. His legs are clean and sinewy, and everything about him betokens a good one to go when in order. Grinstead is named after a banker of Lexington, Ky., whose flrst horse property was a mare called Pic- j ayune by Modoc. From this mare ; he sold S 18.000 worth of colts, as all her produce was very fast, and now he owns some 870,000 worth of 1 racing property. The colt which bears his name is the property of “Lucky” Baldwin of San Francisco, and is by Gilroy, out of a sister to ■ Ruric, by the English horse Sover eign, bred by King William IV. at I Hampton Court. Grinstead has no 1 look of tlio Lexington or Boston family of horses ; he rather par takes of the lofty and slender style of the Emilius blood, and reminds us greatly of Troye’s picture of j Monarch. Hia head is small and j beautifully sot on a neck as slender j as an anteloj.e's. His body is light, | but his running gear is strong, though the legs look delicate and tapering. He has run II miles in 1:5G, which is at the late of 1:43 to the mile. A more blood-like look ing horse could not well be imag ined. Lastly we come to the victor of this great event, the mighty Wild idle. He is owned by Marcus A. Littell, of Ramapo Valley, New i Jersey, but for many years a resi- 1 J deut of this city. The name is a | reverse of his mother’s, the great ! Idlewild, his sire being the English I horse Australian, also the sire of j Rutherford, Felloweraft ami Joe Daniels. Three years ago Mr. Lit tell owned both Wildidlo and Fel loweraft, the latter of which ran four miles in at Saratoga, beating Wanderer and Katie Pease. A murmur of applause ran through the crowd as Captain Tom Moore, liis trainer, pulled off his hood and sheet. His splendid bay coat shone like polished mahogony, every muscle being hardened like the thews of a boxer. He is big enough for a cart horse, being over sixteen hands high. His form does not favor the Australian family much, being more on the style of Lexing ton, yet he is a larger and more massive horse, than his maternal grandsire. The following is a sam ple of the pool-selling : wiiatdle.100 J'O S00 400 Griubtead. 55 140 010 250 Field. 8 12 40 25 163 402 850 (£5 THE RACE. In drawing lot for places, Revenue got the inside track, Sherman next, Grimstead third, Wildidle on the out side. When the bell tapped, Revenue went of with the lead and went at a very slow pace to the quarter, fol lowed by Sherman, tho two cracks lying quietly in the rear, and biding their own time. At the half mile pole the pace was to slow to suM Sherman so he moved up and pass ed Revenue just before reaching the head of the homestretch. They ran through the first mile in this way, iu 1:55, both the Kentucky chaps pulling with all their might. Away they went into the second mile, and the pace began to quicken as they rounded the bond, Sherman stil. in the lead. At the quarter he was four lengths ahead of Revenue, six iu front of Grinstead and seven in front of Wildidle, who was hugging the pole and trying to run as short a mile as possible, The game little colt got no respite, while Revenue was already beginning to lire; and all this lime the big 'uns were bot tling up their steam tor the time of need. Around the turn they came, entering the homestretch, and here Lakeland shook the bit through the big horse’s mouth. Like a flash he moved by Grinstead, who didn’t want him yet and placed himself by the side of Revenue. The tatter now moves up to Sherman, and the trio came thundering down by the stand amid deafening cheers in 3:45, the second mile being in 1:51. Lake land now took the great horse to the front and passed Sherman with ease, unnsteau lying in inn rear co me quarter pole, where Ilia rider shook out a reef and passed Sherman. The pace was growing hotter, and Rev enue was now a hundred yards be hind and needed the bellows-mender. In this way they ran through the third mile in 1:50, the three miles being done in 5:36H. Now came the final rush; and Hennessey shook Grinstead and away he went for the leader; at the qu trier only a length behind. Up the back stretch they lliltod like homeward bound swal lows, side by s 4 <> Grinstead s nose showing in the lead. “He’s got bind” went up from a hundred throats. Vain hopes! Lakeland strikes the big horse with the spur, aod forward ha comes like a mighty engine. No body tees Sherman or Revenue now. All eyes arson the two great cracks who come with the speed of encbaut BMaC At the 4r*w|M Oriastead makes his latt eff rt, but the speed of Wiididle is only equaled by his j (Tameness, and he crosses the score one length in 7:25&, eovered with 1 foam and (rlory. Sherman's time was 7:40, and Revenue was about three hundred yards behind. H Walah'a b h Wiididle. 6 years .1 j C Simpson's b c Grinstrad, * years .2 W P. Barnes’s b e Sherman. 3 years.3 0 A Johnson’s ch h Revenue (aged).4 Time. 725H. This race has been beaten but three times — twice by Lexinttton, the erand sire of Wiididle, and once by Kelloweraft, his brother in-blond. An Immense crowd of spectators witnessed the race, and we noticed many a look of disappointment as Uriustead met his defeat. To our j notion he is the finest horse on (he j American turf to-day, tor iiis dis- ; lance. Four miles is too long a stretch for him airainst the powerful Wiididle, and he fouud it so on Sat j urday. J I'Ll A AM) OPHIR. The movement in these two stock* ! for the past few clays form a current j yipic of con versa i ion, and in San Francisco is looked upon as a lively , itrife between the ‘'bulls” and ! ‘bears”. The fluctuation of Julia, ! ind the money that certain shrewd San Francisco parties are making aut of that stock on “private advices-’ ' ‘and sure points,” furnish a case for 'oininput. Large holders in Julia ire certain that the stock will go up to fJO within the month, and will not tell at any price below that figure. The ‘‘bears-’ proclaim its tail to $s md $10 and on Saturday de’monstra tad their prophetic wisdom by knocking it down to very nearly that knotch. The depression was ; »nlj- temporary, however, and ves ter day the stock went up into the j teens again. We don't want to pre | diet what it will reach by another Sunday, but to our mind the holders : are not far wrong, in pulling the stock to $20. We have no “point;” we simply make the guess for w hat j it is worth. It the Julia has a “little j bonanza” down at the bottom, the I matter is being kept very quiet. If she hasn’t, a good many people will j be tooled. The movement on i iphir, I so far, simply shows that the “bears” have the best of it at the present writing. It does not show that the Ophir is not to day a better mine than ever it has been before. The stock manipulations show the think ing man that the amount of bullion turned out per week, has nothing, or very little to do with the price of its stock. That there is an organ ized and powerful movement to depress ' 'phir at tho present time, is transparent to all. But to what peculiar lino of strategy this move merit is indebted is not so clear. The neat few weeks will in all proba bility develop the kernel that is now in a nut shell. “Avast, there!— steady, steady, my hearty!” is our advice. C. P- FAKE IN GREEN HACKS. We were informed by a California lawyer on board the C. P. It. It., train on Sunday that the railroad company were not demanding coin rates for fares to the Fast; and that an ordor had been promulgated to agents and conductors from head quarters to accept greenbacks if they were tendered. As this fact has not jet boon made known publicly through tlie R. Ii. advertisements, it is presumed that the company are quietlj- pocketing coin fares, while they are only entitled !o tlie same rates in currency. More particularly does this occur to us, as the gentle man referred to paid tho company greenback fare to Reno while we handed out tho same amount in coin. Now, the question is, are not green backs a legal tender for railroad fare on the C. P.? We believe it is. It is said this sly little arrangement has been going on over the road for the past two months. How is it, you quills of San Francisco? We take the following from the Carson Valley “News” of October 23d: “ The Perasich Brothers had a pre liminary examination in Carson on Tuesday. Harkness and other wit nesses testified clearly as to the shout ing by Elia Perasich, hut no evidence was adduced to criminate George, and he was discharged. Elia was hound in the sum of $5,000 to an swer before the District Court at the November term.” “ Work on the Odd Fellows’ building is progressing rapidly and will lie completed within contract time—November 1st. It will add greatly to the beauty of the building and the street on which it stands, be sides protecting it effectuilly Ir an damage by storms—the chief design in having it re-covered.
