Thousands of tons of coal in the buakers of the S. P. Co. at Sparks, are on fire. Indiana stone will be used in the construction of the new gov ernment building at Reno. C. E. Kent, the Stillwater mer chant, had his arm broken by a kick from a fractious horse last week. A fish hatchery, to handle 5, 000,000 spawn, will be in opera tion at Carson before the first of October. The trial of Walter Barieu for the murder of Sheriff Logan, of Nye county, is now engaging the court at Tonopah. Johnny Coffeepot, a Piute In dian, has cleaned up $34,000 by the sale of mining ground at East gate, Churchill county. Wonder Sun is the name se lected for a weekly newspaper to be published at the mining camp of that name in Churchill county. The Caliente Express and De Lamar Lode have been consoli dated and the paper is now pub lished at Caliente under the name of the Lode-Express. James Wilson is wanted in Rhy olite for jumping a board bill, stealing $60 from a woman who runs a restaurant there, and also stealing a couple of burros. Deacon Gale, who ran trains on the Carson & Colorado for a num ber of years, and who is well known in western Nevada, has been stricken with paralysis at his home in Reno. The saloons and wine rooms of Reno are making a determined effort to prevent the City Council from abolishing the private drink ng booths in which women are frequently entertained. The Truckee River General Electric Company is preparing to build a generating plant on the upper Carson River to supply Car son City and Douglas county farmers with power and light. Five-year-old Joe Plumb and some companions who were play ing with matches, set his grand father’s barn on fire Monday, and the building was consumed. The Plumb ranch is about three miles southwest of Reno. It has been given out by the officers of the respective compan ies that the Midway, of Tonopali will soon add ten more stamps tc its mill, making twenty in all, and that the Belmont will erect a mil of sixty stamps capacity. Wm. Gibbons, of Rhyolite, aged 45, charged with rape on a 6-year old girl, has been exonerated Much indignation is expressed b> the people of the camp toward Prentice, the father of the girl and the person who made the charge Constable Nofsinger and his deputy, Hugh Willis, who have had charge of the police system ol Manhattan, have been summarily removed from office by the County Commissioners on account of the numerous disorders that have oc curred there. J. P. Burke died at Fallon Mon day as a result of a blow struck by an unknown assailant. Burke and his assailant had been playing cards—the former winning—and as he stepped from the saloon he was struck on the side of the head. He was found dead in his room. Minnie Woods is under arrest in Reno for rolling a man and se curing $400 by the process. While standing near a stove Sunday evening of last week, Mrs. T. E. Riley, of Reno, was knocked senseless by a flash of lightning. She was not seriously injured. George Etchart, proprietor of the Commercial Hotel, in Reno, ejected John Bell from the place Sunday night for cheating at a card game. Bell retaliated by taking four shots at Etchart, one of which lodged in his shoulder. Bell is in jail on a charge of as sault with intent to kill. The government and the con tractors who are carrying on large engineering undertakings in the vicinity of Fallon, are having a difficult time in obtaining a suf ficient labor supply. The prevail ing rate of wages has been $2.25 and $2.50 a day, but the workmen have been tempted into the har vest fields by the ranchers who are paying $2.75 and in some in stances $3.
