Nevada’s Prosperity
Prosperity first came to Nevada
in 1859, when the Comstock lode,
at Virginia City, was discovered.
Since then the State has period
ically contributed her full share to
the output of gold, silver and lead,
and soon promises to add very
substantially to the copper pro
duction of the world.
In her early history, the rapid
development of the Comstock, of
the mines of Austin, Tusearora,
Pioche, White Pine and a score of
other and only a little less noted
camps, gave Nevada the name of
the “Silver State.” Eureka added
materially to the silver production,
but it also produced lead by the
thousands of tons. In the ’7o’s
Eureka was one of the most im
portant lead-mining districts in the
world.
In recent years the discovery of
a new and rich silver-gold district
at Tonopah once more attracted
attention to Nevada, and that at a
time when mining within the State
had dwindled for various reasons
to a very unimportant industry.
It seems strange that so little
gold should have been found in
Nevada during the earlier years,
when tlie most vigorous prospect
ors and investors the West ever
saw were searching everywhere
for mineral, but this appears to
have been wholly accidental, for
the gold was there.
With Tonopah as a new center
from which prospectors might ex
plore the country, came the dis
covery of Goldfield and later of
Bullfrog, Manhattan, Kawich,
Buckskin, Ramsey and of a dozen
or more new gold camps. It looks
as though Mr. Roberts, Director of
the United States mint at Wash
ington. was right w hen he said re
cently, "gold mining in Nevada is
only in its infancy," and that gold
production of that State during the
next few years will show a greater
increase than that of any other re
gion of the world.
It is estimated that the gold pro
duction this year will reach $15,
000,ooo, while the.promise for the
\ ears to come is most assuring, be
cause of the many camps having
veins earrving gold, siver, copper,
lead, zinc and other minerals of
economic importance. Some of
these are not at present commer
cially available, owing to isolated
situation; but a.> transportation
problems are being rapidly solved,
these more isolated mines will
come within the influence of im
proved conditions. Many places
at present held temporarily in
check bv uncompletion of pro
jected railroads, or the bringing in
of water supplies will come into
prominence and public favor.
The measure of success will be
largely determined by the real
value of the mineral deposits, but
in scarcely less degree by the com
petency and management of the
great low grade mines of the State,
High grade ore Nevada has al
ways had, and probably will con
tinue to have for many years to
come, but there is low grade ore
there, too—millions of tons of it,
constituting an almost immeasur
able asset. It remains for capital
in the hands of competent, dis
creet management to convert these
large ore bodies into profit, and
this is what will be done.
High grade ores always supply
the incentive, and often the need
ed capital as well, to develop lower
properties. It is a fact well worth
remembering that the principal
great mines of the world—the en
during mines which have done
more than anything else to make
mining a legitimate and largely
profitable business—were low
grade mines. The mines of this
class include such gold properties
as the Homestake and Treadwell;
such copper properties as the Rio
Tinto, Granby and Britania, and
those of Lake Superior; such sil
ver-lead mines as the Bunker Hill
& Sullivan, and such lead and
zinc mines as many of those of
Missouri.
Great bodies of low grade ore
will yet do more for Nevada;s
future prosperity than most per
sons think. Already the phenom
enal deposits of Rlv are develop
ing in a way that gives unmistak
able evidence of what may be an
ticipated for the future.—Los An
geles Mining Review.
Food don’t digest? Because the stom
ach lacks some one of the essential di
gestants or the digestive juices are not
properly balanced. Then, too, it is this
undigested food that causes sourness and
painful indigestion. Kodol For Indiges
tion should be used for relief. Kodol is
a solution of vegetable acids. It digests
what you eat, and corrects the deficien
cies of the digestion. Kodol conforms to
the National Pure F'ood and Drug Daw.

WESTERN PACIFIC NOW
DOWN TO BUSINESS
F. A. Wadleigh. assistant general
passenger agent of the Denver & .Rio
Grande, and F. M. Lampton, assisant
general freight agent, made the trip
from Denver to the present terminus of
the Western Pacific, about 140 miles
west of Salt Lake, several days ago. It
is believed that the purpose of their trip
was on business connected with the op
eration of trains lietween Salt Lake and
Bews Siding, where the Gould line con
nects with the Nevada Northern.
Vice-President Schlacks and General
Manager Ridgway have been giving this
matter considerable attention duang the
last two weeks, and as the time for
making connection with the Nevala
Northern is rapidly approaching, the
Western Pacific officials think that it is
time for the road to get dow n to busi
ness.
The graders for the Western Pacific
are within three miles of Bews Siding.
The tracklayers are some distance be
hind, but if the plans of the high offi
cials are carried out, rails will be laid
into Bews by August 1. When the road
bed has been properly ballasted, the
operation of trains will commence, giv
ing residents of Rly direct connection
with Salt Lake.
