Battle < ruen, like many other oraeks in the Hil.ti, is quite tl it, and although it is hut five or six feet to bed io,"f, tl*i- mines are rather hard to open. Very liith- work tins been done as yet, but the cr ck prospects well whey-ver it has b*en tried. Water is scarce at present. t>.t the miuers get more th tn they want at soon as tu*v b'gin to sink. Claims arc located ) long the creek for uioie th.iu twenty miles, and any number of Kids creeks and gulches arc claimed. If one claim iu twenty turns out well this will be n good mining country. There is a great deal of quartz around bira and very many ledges have been located. Some of them look weii but the ora Las not been tested yet. The weatlnr has bien splended for the last two weeks. *ud uinch pros pecting has bem done iu that time. The snow has disappeared except iu the deep canyons sud ou th'* uorth mile of the bills, and if the weather continues favorable there will be con siderable placer mining done this month. Money is scarce, but a pet son doesn’t notice it so much here, as gold miners' wants are few and they don’t require much capital for their business. The Indians have not troubled ns this winter, but this fine weather may tnaw them out. They made >t so warm on this creek last summer that the few whites hud to leave, but I do not think they will try to mu off the present crowd, which is a little too large tor them to fool with. While speaking of Hayward, I for got to say that it is a regularly laid-ont town, anil cousists of about twenty houses, including four groceries and a blacksmith shop. Two lots are re served for a sohool-house and church. The town is governed by a City Coun cil. Justice ef the Peace and City Marshal. It has also started that indispensa ble adjunct to a new mining town, a grave yard; but, perhaps, I should s»y th.at the town was started as an adjou< t of the grave yard --a miner having ac cidentally shot hiuisolf before the town was laid out. On the 1st instant, two men hud a shooting scrape here in which one was mortally wounded. A miners’ meeting was called immediately, for 11 o’clock a. M. ithe shooting was done in the morning), a jury was impaneled, conu s* I appointed und (lie case was tried and the prisoner acqnioted, before 4 o’clock p. m. The verdict gave general stisfuction, ns the evidence showed conclusively that the slain man was ihe aggressor. More anou.
