The great Sand Lot agitator, Denis Kearney, the railroad Isiys say, passed east yesterday, to attend the Ureen back-Labor National Convention. Like Samson of old, his strength seemed to I* in his hair, and sinco his locks were shorn, licit by a fair Delilah, but by the burlier of the House of Correction, he is more of a jackass than a lion. The W. P. C., of which he was the Chief, split on the question of sending dele gates to the National Convention, and -Kearney, bereft of his Sand Lot back ers, is nobody. (lane In (iiurrhlll t'onnly. Editor Silver State: As the elec tion is rapidly approaching, and every one’s thoughts are turned toward the future of our State and the Nation, I, in company with many other Republi cans and Democrats, have been casting our eyes around among the available men for one whom the people of Hum boldt county can run and elect to the State Senate. We must have a man who has the dignity and honor of this State at heart, who in his private life is above reproach, and of whom no one can say he has his price. For a long time past the peoule of Nevada (I will r iurc specify Humboldt) have elected to the Legislature many good men, but as a rule negative men. Now, what we want is not a man simply for his being in his quiet manner good, but we want a bold, aggressive man, who can not only be good himself, but can make such a utix- that he ean prevent the had men from exercising any influence ami even make timid men strong in the right. Ti»e next legislature is to lie saddled with the responsibility of send ing to the United States Senate a man to represent us in that body. Shall that election be carried by merit, or shall we have Sharon, a resident of California? No; let us send a man to the State Senate who will have no price. This question should cause peo ple to open their eyes sftid look hhout them for good men. A large number of the people of Paradise have request ed me to suggest to the people of Hum boldt the name of S. B. Palmer as a man who can and will serve us better than any one else. He is a man well known to every man, woman and child in our county, and is known by them to be a good, sterling, honest and posi tive man. For many years lie has been a hard-working, consistent Democrat, and taking into consideration the good he has done in private life, the good lie could do in a public capacity cannot be overestimated.* Hoping these words will fall on good soil, and the Democrats and Republi cans will lay partyism aside and bring “Brick” through the Convention, and lie will l>e elected State Senator. Al though I am jiersonally a Republican, as are also many men who incited me to write this letter, yet we think Hum boldt county and Nevada cau receive from no man better or more disinter ested work and service than from “Brick” Palmer. Republican. Wool Arriving The Han i'rauelsee .Market. The first wool of the season arrived here yesterday from Spanish Joe’s and {loppiu's ranches. Shearing was de layed in consequence of the backward ness of the Spring. In compliance with the request of several sheep owners, we quote the prices of different grades of the article in San Francisco, and will continue to do so weekly during the season. The Bulletin says: Several Eastern buyers have left for home within two or three days, declining to make fur ther purchases. Some of them in for mer years have bought largely in the Sau Francisco market, but this season their transactions will scarcely amount to one-tenth of their usual business. Holders are beginning to make up their minds to carry large quantities tiil Fall if necessary, believing that it would lie better to do so than attempt to realize on what might be offered if an effort were 'made to force sales. We quote: 18c to ‘20c for burry, 21@22tc for slightly hurry and 23c to 23c for free southern and San Joaquin. Choice northern is quotable at 27@30c, and Eastern Oregon at 23<<i26c $ 1U loMUifwl Valera Its. Some lads from twelve to fifteen years of age have erected a gallows in the sagebrush above the round-house, and experiment on sage-rats and liz ards. One who witnessed one of their executions says they tie a chunk of load to the hind legs of a rat or lizard, which they place on a trap with a string suspended from 4 beam about its neck. They then spring the trap, and' the “varmint” is sometimes beheaded by the fall, and always killed dead. The boys have been practicing almost daily since the execution of Hymer here, but that the gallows has more terror for them now than before that event i# very doubtful. “KallHlrd for Ihr war.” The Olio Club will give its third en tertainment iu Ceutennial Hall next Saturday evening, June 5th, at which time will be presented “Enlisted for the War,” a drama in three acts. The scenes are laid in the late war, and the play is founded on occurrences which actually transpired during the rel*d lion. As General Grant is one ot the leading characters in the play, every body will have a curiosity to see him as he really appeared as Commander of the Union forces, whether he is nomi nated for Knqieror at Chicago or not. I)o not fail to invest fifty cents lor a ticket, as the play is one of the best ever presented on the boards in Wiu nemucca. Ten Trains.
