VOL. XVI. WINXEMlICCA, NEVADA, SATURDAY, JUNE 26, 1880. « NO. To. Why the Xi isUr Points to lli«* Pole. Why the magnetic needle points to the north is thus explained by Profes sor C. T. Patterson, of the United States Coast Survey: Thft earth is it stdf a magnet, and attracts the needle just as ordinary magnets do, and it is found to be affected by the action of the sun in a manner not yet fully un derstood. The magnetic poles of the earth are not in line with the geograph j ical poles, bat makes an angle with them of nearly 23 degrees. At the present time the northern, magnetic pole is near the Arctic Circle, on the j meridian of Omaha, and, from the 11a-' - ture of the case, the pole may be better Jt described as a region than a lixed fact. I The needle docs not everywhere point I to the true astronomical north, but va ries within certain limits. At San Francisco it points 17 degrees east of north, and at Calais, Maine, as much to \ the west. At the northern magnetic p>!e a balanced needle points with its north end downward in a plum!) line; j at San Francisco it dips about *>3 de [ degrees, and at the southern magnetic pole the south end jwiints directly f down. The action of the earth npon a magnetic needle at its surface is of ? about the same force as that of a hard steel magnet -KJ inches long, strongly magnetized, at a distance of one foot. It is very probable that a study of dy namo-electric chines, now so much used 111 electric illumination, will re 1 veal soon some far reaching truths re [ garding magnetism in general. A V>Vil Contract. A young lady down in North Caro lina, whether white or colored is not stated, bought a set of jet jewelry, for w hich she was to pay a hundred kisses, one a day until the tally was complete. Alter the first thirty days the girl i backed out. probably lx;caime the thing got too monotonous, and the man—01 j course there was a man in the case ;u well as a woman- brought suit against her for breach of contract. It might seem to some that such an action would I tic laired as contrary to public policy. I The case appears, nevertheless, to be I going on. ft would l>< interesting to | know what was agreed upon by the I parties to th..- ev er sale as the average jj the price originally stipulated for the | set. The verdict of the jury may be I expected to throw new light upon that •exed and my' rious philosophy of the I estimate of civil damages winch is so I incompreliei c.hl to the common mind. John Regod is a citizen o; Chicago, i The judge of o:i<: 1 : the courts of that ■ city looked very queerly w hen Jolui answered the question, hat is your I name? ” “Are you a home ruler f was asked H of one of the candidates at a late elec I turn.
