Of course, there was a garret in this large house; riot a mere incident to it, but to tny boyish net on its chief and crowning glory. Untold treasures were gathered there; heirlooms from the past, and disabled implements or dis used inventions of the present. There was the old fashioned spinning-wheel, which could still whirl r. jrrily around; there were the stately “fire-dogs" of a former generation. (Irest chests and boxes lined the sides of the room, and happy were t ie h nirs devoted to ran sacking them. The garret was a boom inestimable for the children’s rainy days. Hut there, was a garret above the garret, a sort of third lien von, to which admission was rate. It was reached by a steep ladder, aud had a floor of loose board*, end its own little window near to the apex of the roof. There were stored the most secret pos sessions of the house; walnuts and but ternuts. bunches of seed sweet-corn, thyme and savory, and ail “runpies that have virtue" in domestic medicine. The cellar formed a fie foundation for so manifold activities. In it were the finer vegetables for the table. At the foot of tlm front stairway were rows of swinging shelves for the red aud golden apples. Here \va to b" seen the base of the great stone chimney, which was strong enough to anchor a leaning tower. These immense chimneys took up no small part of the interior of the old-time houses. [Martin Kellogg, in the September Californian. Napoleon It. Arthur deserted his wife and family at Marysville, Ohio, twenty years ago, to elope w ith a neighbor's daughter. His wife remained on the farm, ai d reared thou- children, while he wandered about the country'. A poor, broken down old tramp pro ented himself r >e uitly at tlio homestead. This was tie; w reck of the husband and father. Ho begged for foo l ami lodg ing, expreo iug tie; utmo-t contrition for his bad behavior. The wife acted with prompt s Sin sot flu; dec on him, and he barely «•» aped with his life. Five boys, digging for s woodchuck, at l’leas.'.m, *1.11 N. li ., found some coins which tie y 1 ok to 1 • gold. Craatly excited, -they' continued a search until al it a thou and pieces were gathered. Th; treasure turned •out to be of small ..-.hie, however, con sisting of English coins of low denomi nations. A peddler was murdered there seventy years ago, and ihe plund er buried. MUDIM ..v:s-vr~ .-t:: r— ; I WINNKARXCA ^ FLOrnJNC M 'i L L s. ciiA'iu;.'; KK.'.:u:n, i roi'rutor.
