Tlic weather, which was delightful for several weeks, became unusually disagreeable yeat r.iay. A still breeze blew up from th< southwest and raised clouds of dust. Heavy banks of clouds above the horizon denoted rain in the afternoon, but the wind shitted to the north, the clouds disappeared, and this morning was coo! enough for December. A few years ago snow fell here to the depth of six indier the night before the Presidential election, and it may do so again this year. Public Speaking. Hon. George \V. Cassidy, Democratic nominee for Congress, and Father Mo Giath, of the Liberal Society, Virginia City, will address the, citizens of Win nsniucca, in Centennial Hall, this even ing. Mr. Cassidy, who has served eight years as Senator from Eureka, is thoroughly posted on State and national atl’airs, and Father McGrath has the reputation of being the most eloquent speaker in the State. An Autl-Cliinese Piute. A Piute, while under the influence of liquor, got possession of the key to a China house, locked the door, and re fused to give the key to the owner of the house. Deputy Sheriff Davidson’s attention was < ailed to the matter, and be took the key from the Indian, whom he locked up until he became sober. • A Crazy Chinaman. A Chinaman was caught, by Officer II use, in the act of burning up chickens belonging to L. K. Praia. The officer arrested him and lodged him in jail. His actions denote that he is crazed from opium smoking or some other cause, and it is probable that a commis sion will be appointed to inquire into his mental condition. Railroad Ilugm tcs. Superintend nt Lice of the Wads worth Division, and Superintendent Coddingtou of tho liumboldt Division, were in town to-day. General Super intendent Towue, alio passed through on iiis return Hum the East. Races at Wells. The races at liumboldt Wells begin to-day. Illustrating the Benefits Derived by Workingmen from His Railroad En terprise. Copies of a cartoon, designed by Nast or some other genius, are being posted up, to illustrate the benefits derived by workingmen from the building of Mr. Sharon’s railroads. 'The cartoon is intended for circulation in Storey, Ormsby and other counties, where the Legislative candidates are pledged, or supposed to be pledged, to vote, if elected, for William Sharon for United States Senator from Nevada. The walls of Carson are decorated with this true-to-nature work of art, and the Appeal describes it as follows: “There are five pictures in all. The first rep resents a miner’s shanty with ‘To let’ on the door. A starving dog sits in the foreground, while a miner and his rag ged child are close by looking at a bill presented for flour and beef, which can not be paid. The next represents a party of well to do workingmen out of employment and wondering where their next job is coming from. Then is seen Sharon making his \ irginia speech, where he says, ‘Like a noble tree I’ve stood between you and the wind—and in short, shed my weeping leaves upon you.’ ‘One of the sheltered,’ out of work and ragged, is looking at Ah Ivi, Sharon’s well dressed Chinese servant, who is grinning at the situation. 'I lie largest picture represents one of Sharon’s deserts which he proposes to make ‘blossom like the rose,’ blossoming with Chinamen, who are digging on the new railroad, while white men are standing off and waiting for a chance to w ork. This cartoon will do more harm to the Republican Legislative ticket than all the Demecratic speakers and newspa p rs now in the field. The force of the thing lies in its truth, and its arguments c m he seen by men at a glance. It is the most effective document yet issued in the campaign, and its force can at once he destroyed by throwing Sharon out of the fight. A candidate so vul m cable as he should never be in the light at all. None but his hirelings will make a defense for him, and lie i« utterly incapable of defending himself.’ Another Meteor. About eight o’clock last evening a brilliant meteor, w hich appeared to be about as large as the full moon, fell per pendicularly from the heavens in the direction of Golcouda. It was of a daz zl.ug bluish-white color, and appeared from here to strike the north end of the Harmony Mountain. Pleasing:, hut Dangerous Amusement. Two young men at Wadsworth have been obliged to change their boarding house and find new quarters, for kissing the landlady’s daughter. The daughter did not want the young men set adrift on a cold, heartless world, but the mother would not tolerate such “goin’s on.” —- * - - Cattle Shipped. William Shirk shipped from this sta tion, to-day, to San Francisco, twelve cars of beef cattle. Emigrants. Some eighty-one emigrants (six of them from tins part of the country) went East last evening. Lost. A gale blew down a circus tent at Argenta, Ark., and two lions escaped from their broken cage. The beasts bounded through the frightened assem bly and disappeared into the darkness. The rare opportunity of a lion hunt was not efnbraced by the inhabitants, who all got behind securely fastened doors as quickly as possible. The cir cus employees, however, provided themselves with torches, pursued the fugitives, frightened them with the flaring lights, and drove them into a cage. _ ^ _ Cambridge, Mass., will celebrate its 2'»0th anniversary 011 the 28th of next December. Ten years after the land ing of the Plymouth Pilgrims, and three mouths after the settlement of Poston, Governor Winthrop decided that a fortified place in the vicinity w as desirable. The site of Cambridge was selected, and the Governor with others built residences there. Mayor Rose, of Davenport, Iowa, threw the first shovelful of eartli in the work of excavating for a soldiers’ mon ument in that city. “Tw enty-one years ago, he said, in his address, “I was shoveling very near this spot for a dol lar a day.” James Loomis, a negro of Salem, Ohio, married a white and wealthy widow.
