A Young Forest. One mile from lieowawc, on the Hum boldt, says the Hunk a Sentinel, .Mr. Benson lias one of the finest iO-acie groves of elm, Carolina poplar and maple, trees, ever grown in the .State of Nevada. The trees will be two years old in April next, and they were beau tiful to look upon the past Summer. They show a high state of cultivation, and if their grow th continues for twenty years, iu proportion to that of the last, they will ho monsters, ami will be a source of profit. A very interesting feature of laising a IU acre forest, is iu the fact that alter tlve same is two years old, ami for twenty years there after, t!ia 'state of Nevada pays the cultivator $10 per acre per annum pre mium. Mr. Benson is ou the right track and w ill get paid for beautifying his own place. Reduction of Rates. Our exchanges say the Union Pacific Railway Company has made a general reduction in rate* over tlic roads con trolled hy that Company. The Salt Lake Tribune says, “ this is a volun tary reduction ou the part of the Com pany, and for that reason w ill be appre ciated all the more.” The iates in Nebraska have been reduced to four cents a mile. The former rate from Ogden to Omaha, $77 58 has been cut to $02. The late from Ogdcu to Den ver is cut from $55 to $15. From Ogden to Dillon, the rate has been reduced from $30 25 to $25, turd from Ogden to Blackfoot, the rate is cut from $13 50 to $11 45. Personal Note*. Harry Warren, of llie Paradise Be f*orter is in town. Colonel Mcacham, of tire Humboldt House, was in town to-day, looking as well as if Nevada had gone for Garfield. Dr. Johnson was called to Lewis last evening to attend Bam drove, who was accidentally injured at that place re cently. Idaho bullion. Welle, Fargo & Co’s Express brought down from Atlanta, Idaho, to-day, bulliou valued at $ti, li)3, for shipment to the East. Down with Pneumonia. J. F. Clark, of St. Mary’s, ou the Humboldt, is down with the pneu monia. Ho has been very low with the disease, but Dr. Johnson, who attended Lilli, says he is getting better. , Cure of Small-pox. The Carson Appeal has the following: There is danger that sinall-pox may devastate this coast this Winter. It is now alarming San Francisco. In view of this fact the following receipt should be given the widest publicity by appear ing in every newspaper: Edward Hine, a corresiKmdent of the Liverpool Mercury, in a communication to that paper writes as follows: “I am willing to risk my reputation as a pub lic man if the worst case of small-pox can not be effectually cured in three days simply by cream of tartar. This is the sure and never failing remedy. One ounce of cream of tartar dissolved in a point of boiling water, to be drank when cold, at intervals; it can be taken at any time and is a preventive as well as a curative. It is known to have cured in thousands of cases. It never leaves a mark, never causes blind ness and prevents tedious lingering.” The Enterprise has the following: One grain of sulphate of zinc, one grain of fox-glove {dijltalin)', mix with a little water and sugar; then add three ounces of water; give the patient atable sjioonful of this every hour. At the sec ond hour the patient begins to fccF its effect by a great sense of comfort. At the third hour a genial and natural warmth prevades the system, and by the eighth hour the disease is thorough ly arrested, no matter what stage it may have reached. It can be given at any period of the disease. A smaller dose for children, according to their age. One dose is far better than two vaccina tions. It has been used with certainty in every case, arresting the disease at once. It is used in the same manner for scarlet fever, aud with the same positive success. A Sad Accident. R. W. Wood gave his four-year-old boy a pen knife to play with. The boy opened one of the blades of the knife, and while playing with other children ran the blade through the pupil of oue of his eyes. Dr. Johnson, who was called to attend the boy, fears lie will lose his sight. The wound is not pain ful, but it may result in a life-long in jury to the eye. Mr. Wood of course feels very badly over tho accident, but he has hopes that the child will not lose his sight. Parents can not be too careful in keeping sharp instruments out of the reach of children. New Patents. Dewey & Co.’s Scientific Press Pat ent Agency lias received official notice of the issue of the following patents to Pacific Coast inventors, for the week ending October 2b, 1880: 233,058, gate, J. M. Cheney, Sonoma, Cal.; 233,692, water wheel, L. A. Pel ton, Caniptonville, Cal.; 233,668, tap ami faucet, P. F. Gardner, Dills Ferry, Cal.; 233,697, coal hod, W. S. Ray, S. Parsons, application denied. James Rice, application denied. Discharged. The examination of Charles Coun seller, who was arrested for an assault with a deadly weapon, before Judge ■ Osborn yesterday, resulted in the dis charge of the defendant. The evidence showed that the defendant, who w as a cook at the Humboldt House, had the knife in his liaud cutting meat, ami did not attempt to use it on Costanich, the complaining witness. Northern Freight. V. J. Hopkins’ team left to-day for Boise Barracks, Idaho, loaded by Earl & Co., with 28,000 pounds of stores for the military at that Post. Three teams, owned respectively by Elias Jones, Cap. Wright and Con. Ryau, left to-day for Fort McDermit, loaded with 111,000 feet of lumber. — - • •-- — The Majorities. The Reno Journal iigures up the Democratic majorities in Nevada as fol lows: President and Congressman, 1, 300 each; Judge of the Supreme Court, 2,000. Fair’s Legislative ticket leads Sharon's on the popular vote about 5,00fc * The Great Revivalists. Moody and Sankey, the celebrated revivalists, passed west yesterday on their way to California. They met with such an enthusiastic reception in Mormondom, that they concluded to stay there until the excitement inci dent to the election had subsided in San Francisco. It is said that Moody made a greater impression on the fol lowers of the Prophet than any other Gentile who ever went among them, and hundreds of them were present every time he preached. In Session. The Board of County Commissioners is in session to-day, attending to gen eral business. The Board will probably canvass the votes polled at the tecent election to-morrow or next day. Cattle Shipped.
