His Royal Highness, the Prince of Vales, went to see the “World” at the l>rury Lane lately, and seemed greatly absorbed with the exciting incidents of the drama. The clever impersonation of the “Jew,” by Harry Jackson, evi dently struck the royal visitor, and when Moses Jewell exclaimed, “Here we are again, as the Queen says when she opens Parliament,” his Royal High ness exploded with laughter, in which the whole house joined. Evidently the Prince is not thin-skinned on matters concerning royalty. This incident re minds us that Sir Robert Peel was r among the audience at the “Gaiety” lately, and the portly Raronet greatly enjoyed the acting of Mr. Florence in the “Mighty Dollar;” his cachiuationa resounded through the house like the sound of the oft-repeated clarion. Sir Rol»ert is what is termed “a splendid audience,” and when anything droll touches him he laughs out long and loud and strong. For many years Moses, a negro, was a servant at the University of Alabama, and waited on the students very faith fully, Jbut he was a most notorious hypocrite. He was on that account commonly called “Preach” among the boys. One day he w»as pissing a crowd <of students, when one of them called to him: “I say, Preach, w hat are you going to do when Satan gets you?” '“Wait on students," was the reply. The papers of France are rejoicing about the excellent prospect of there being lots of champagne this season, because the grape crop is good, just as if there was any connection between plenty of grapes and plenty of cham I«.gne. In America chemical science has reached such a state of perfection that it really makes very little differ ence, as far as the wine is concerned, whether the grapes grow or not. 4‘I would rather vote for a long cared donkey thau for yon,” said an independent voter to a candidate nt the recent election. “Oh, come now! you ought not to allow yourself to lie so in fluenced by family ties,” resjioiided the candidate. The voter has been puz zling his head ever since tw find out why the crowd laughed. “(live mo the hand that will never deceive me,” sings the jioet. The auto graph man of the Lowell Citizen says, “He wants the cards stocked so as to bring the four aces into his list.” Thus it is, says an exchange, that the warm aspirations of a sensitive genius are '/ nipped in the hud by the iey chill of scholarly criticism.
