The proxy goldbug Republican convention, which met in Reno last week, gave the people a disserta- j tion on the beauties of g. o. p’ism. It was emphatic in its opinion that the best and only way to secure free coinage of silver is to support the two old parties, which are opposed to it. ft seems to have no choice as between the twins on this question, but its boss being engaged in the borax ( business with a few Chinamen and Piutes, it rather leans in favor of the Sherman, Reed and McKinley wing of the Wall street party for the sake ‘ of a tariff on borax to protect a com- ■ bination of native and foreign pauper laborers. It bid high for the railroad vote, by tabling a resolution in favor of the government making the Central I Pacific company pay the million dol- ’ lars owing to it. We wonder if it did not call in the services of C. C. Wallace on this resolution. It is an easy matter to manipulate a proxy convention. ALABAMA AND NEVADA. The Republican party of Nevada has adopted the Democratic tactics of Alabama—the counting of ballots not cast. It cast five votes in its conven tion at Reno as coming from Hum boldt. The five votes were fraudulent. There was but one delegate of the party from this county and he was -elf appointed, and represented no sentiment of any party in this county. | There is no Republican party in Humboldt, and its twin brother was strangled to death two years ago with a Cleveland decoction of deceit and ' traitorous innocuous deseuetude. i Some of the gentlemen, whose names j were mentioned as delegates fromthis county, we learn, have consulted a lawyer with the view of bringing a *uit against the proxy convention for libel and slander, but when it was suggested that the convention was bankrupt in morals and principles, as well as financially, the matter was dropped. STOPPED THE MAILS. A strenuous effort is being made to prostitute the federal judiciary into prosecuting the strikers for a conspiracy to stop the U. S. mails, when it is a well known and recog nized fact that the strikers did not delay the mails in this state fifteen minutes—but at all times offered to manjand run the mail trains through —but the officers of the company re fused to let the mails be moved. They not only conspired against carrying the mails, but criminally stopped their transportation, for which they should be prosecuted and the extreme penalty of the law inflicted. Ingersoll Defends Debs. I have known Mr. Debs for about twelve years. I also know his pa rents, his sisters and his wife. They are all excellent people and I am their friend. Mr. Debs, I believe, is a perfectly sincere man—very enthu i siastic in the cause of labor—and his sympathies are ail with the working man. As to his drinking; I never met him when he appeared to be un der the influence of stimulants. He was always in good health and in full possession of his faculties. In Terre Haute, where he lives, he is exceed ingly popular. It has been his idea for years to unite all labor orginizi tions. Robert G. Ingersoll. I wrote to Colonel Ingarsoll inquir ing as to the authenticity of an inter view with him reported in one of the Philidelphia dailies. He replied:, “This is what I said of Mr. Debs," and the matter that followed is here quoted. Such testimony is impor tant in view of gossip and denuncia tion that everywhere attend the pub lic mention of the strike leader.— * I‘h ilndelphia Conservator.
