(SljeftemanMrtlmtK. Bismarck, D. T., Sept. 12,1877. The Mystery of a Cellar. N. Y. Herald: There cniiie to Ma tron Webb's rooms, in the central of fice yesterday evening. !rt what srlvnncfd age, who with a look of eager cxpf ctancy eyed the little who hati been brought there. vVhm b* had made the circuit of the room wii.ii out finding the object of his search, the poor man turned away, evidently deep ly disappointed. At this moment a feeble little voice cried, "Papa! my pa pa!" and from a seat by the window a little girl went limping toward him. She was a poor, attenuated creature and her young f*ce was covered with bruises and cuts. Papa! papa!" the lit tle one repeated as the man moved to^ ward the door, 'Papa, do not leave me.' He turned and looked again at the lit tie girl, and then, coming closer, gazed intently at the haggard, bruised face. It required only a moment's scrutiny for him to recognize the child. He caught up.the child and pressed her to his breast. For some time he stood weeping by turns, gazing at the sadly discolored face and covering it with kisses. He was James Costello, a hard working timsmith, who lives in a little mite of a shanty up among the rocks in Seven ty-second street, near the Eastern Boulevard, and tbe girl was his daughter, Anna Costello, who, a couple of days ago, was found' in a dark cellar at No. 212 Grand St., where she had been locked up by a cruel old hag named •Jane McLaughlin. The case has already been in court, and the woman bis been committed by Justice Wandell without bail to await trial for kidnapping. Tbe old woman was a match pedlar and beggar, and during the day she forced the child to accompany her on her mendicant rounds and sought by Baking her appear as wretched as post sible to awaken sympathy in the pass ers-by. At night the old woman be came a fury, her neighbors say, and tortured peor little Anna till she was almost on tbe verge of the grave, Goimg Off Like a Lamb. Grace Greenwood in N. T. Times. There was a time when it was consid ered jastifiable and humane to hurry a 'little the departure of afflicted friends, suffering from utterly hopeles maladies, like hydrophobia, consumption or black jaundice. Now-a-days a morbid phiU apthropy has decided against a prac tice once adopted by the best of people, from tbe best of motives, but I for oae no more doubt the benevolence than the resolution and energy of a certain Yan kee dame who was oBe of the last to act da the aid principle. She had, it seems, husband who was mortally ill, and had been so for a weary time. He had wonderful "gift of continuance," but really his end, a troubled end. seemed •ery near. The minister eame and jtfayed with him—the doctor made his 'last visit and left no "stuff." The dog howled in tbe back yard. In the mor ning the good minister called again to find the looking-glass and the picture of the Washington family veiled in white muslin, tbe village dress-maker cutting on bombazine, and the good wife weeping. Then ensued a conver sation like unto this: "Has our beloved brother departed this life?" ""Yes husband's dead and laid out." "Ah he Is then at rest! Did he suf fer muct: sister, toward the last?" "Awful! be went out of his head and moaned and gasped and tossed about, and, as you had administered spiritual consolation, and he was prepared to die, and the doctor said there wasn't no more hope for hi a to git well then fur a last year's mornin' glory vine to blow out agin, I just took pity on him, he did thrash around so, and couldn't no way enjoy life any longer, and so I got a big pilUr and put it over his face, and sot down on it, and he went off like a lamb."
