The p'ospect was gathered from an abandoned prospect hole, which had been sunk abuut lour teei oelow tlits. surluce, and is tne result of leh^ than ^hall a day's labpr with a spade and'wash basin. It embrace# nu ujeroti3 fine particles and two' nuggets nearly as large as peas, worth in the aggregate, perhaps, eight dollars. The corporal al&o has several fine specimens of quartz, both gold and silver, aud has sucn confidence in the Hilts that he lolly determined to return to them as soon aa his time, is out if. permitted by the Government to do so. The only tools he bad was a spade and a wash basin, and the only time to prospect was rduring brief halts, his company being duty in the Hills. H. N. He is a man sober, industrious* intelligent and reliable, and as jUiie first repoits made by him, on wtiich Custer founded his report, have bedtt fully confirmed after an exhaustive geological survey, so the statements he inakes in private'will be fully justified. jt)ur people, whn know him well and with whom he i8 resided for the past three years, havesuch confidence in him ihat were the Hills open on Monday, by Tuesday night Bismarck would be uearly depopulated, as almost eyery able*bodied loan here is witting and anxious to fol low his lead into the Black Hills. The best mining region discovered by Ross or any others is on Ra^id Creek. The deposits, perhaps, are uo greater, but the water is better. Prof. Jeniiey, how eVer, is partial to French Creek (Cut ter's Gulch), and is said by those who know, to entertain a much more favora ble opinion of the Bl.ick Hills as a min ing region than he dares to express in hi* reports, not wishing to create undue excitement?. The Indians at Standing Rack leceivi ed their annuities last week, and as they received more and better goods thaii ever before, thanks, perhaps, to the effi ciency of their agent, their hearts are good and they are willing now to make any concessions to the whites, even willing to sell the Black Hills and take pay in beef, blankets and calico. The blankets issued to them are of very fine quality, the best ever issued, and when a squaw would come up and draw say seyen blankets and a hundred yards of caiico, with other fixings to mafeb, for one lodge, she would walk off with a grunt of satisfaction which could not be misunderstood, while the bucks would look on and smile, arid put up another .sack of flour on their favdrite flag, racing being general. Already the agent has commenced killing the winter supply of beef for the agency, which consists of about fifteen hundred bead. The cattl* are Texas stock, but they are full-grown animals and in fine* condition. Much, has been said about Major Sperry of the Berthold Agency having issued en trails to the Indians. These are re garded as the choicest morsels by the Indians, and were they wasted or not divided among the several tribes impar tially, there would be occasion for anoth er investigation if the Indians could find Prof. Marsh to listen to their Billy complaints. Dead dog is regarded by them as an American epicure regards quail on toast. While our informant was at the agency, Flying Bird, a lead ing chief from Chevenne Agency, and other chiefs arrived at Standing Rock, for the purpose of holding a .council with the Standing Rock IndianS'in re lation to the sale of the Black Uills. Col. Po'and, the military commandant at Standing Rock, was invited to be pres ent, and he kindly invited our infor mant to be present. Flying Bird made a long speech, and among many other things, said the Missouri River Indians went to the.big council to make a treaty, went for peace, but when they got thero Spotted Tail, Red Cloud and other band* were armed, and the soldiers were arm ed, arid the Northern Indians were dis posed to fight rather than mske a treaty^ and went away with bad hearts, but the Missonri River Indians are gond and want to be at peace with their white brethren, and he was in favor of these Indians (who comprise eighty per cent, of those who made the original treaty, and number about 12,000) making |a treaty with the Government for th« Black Hills regardless of Red Cloud, Spotted Tail and the others. He was satisfied (as most of the Missouri River Indians are) that the whites are bound io enter the Black H»lls, and tbat the Indians are powerless to prevent it, and, therefore, it became their duty to their ptOfle io make the best bargain they could with the Government. Hying Bird was deeply grieved at the treachery of the hostiJes displayed in Little M^n's altempt to massacre the Commission, and realied fully the effect of tbat at tempt. Col. Poland takes a deep, inter est in the matter, and urged the chiefs in' council assembled to consult fully S9 to what they desired to do, and he would submit their, proposition to the Great Father. They were five davs out from Fargo and report the roads very heavy, neither sleighing nor wagoning. Alderman Griffin has had men en gaged for some time past in sinking a well at the Merchant's Hotel. Tbey dug 65 feet and then drilled 27 feet strik ing water which rose in the well 32 feet, giving water in abundance, Mr. Griffin says, and of as good quality as river water.
