The meeting-called at the court house last evening to protest against the division of Dakota territory on the 100th meridian, at proposed in the Saunders' bill, was attended by an assemblage of the reprepsntative men of our community and the outrage upon the people of eastern Dakota was discussed at length and a plan of operations agreed upon. The meeting organise! by the election of Gov. Edmunds as chairman and George W. Kingsbury aa secretary. Judge Brookings was called upon to say something. His position was very decided ly in favor of but one division of the terri tory, and that was on the 46th parallel of latitude. This would give us a complete state with the Black Hills as a part) thereof. Some, he said, were willing to give up two degrees off the west side of the territory and let the Black Hills go, but he did not be lieve in any such compromise. He was of the opinion that when the people of the Hills came to know us better there would be more har mony of action between the two sections. Upon the principle that right is right' and wrong is wrong lie opposed moat decided) a division of the territory on the 100th mer idian. Gen. Beadle said tlftt the difficulties sur rounding Dakota were not within Dakota's control. They were outside of us and were powerful against us. Heretofore outside in fluence had always beaten us and it wa* our duty to ourselves to realize the fact that things were against us. This scheme for the division of the territory on the 100th meridian waa the result of a matured plan of Dakota's combined opposition and we must look upon it as such. Every element of the proposition represented the best points of the opposition. The movement was alive one- Northern Dakota was urg ing it by every trick and device known to interested politicians. Nebraska, Wyoming and Minnesota were backing it and it would gain supporters rapidly under the influence they could bring to its support. All their influe^e was available. Our duty to our selves waa to take such steps as would defeat the measure. The speaker was of the opin ion that a compromise would best effect this. We did not want tbe Black Hills as a portion of Dakota for many good reasons, and he suggested as a compromise that tbe line of division be drawn along the 103d meridian as far as the 46th par allel and thence east on that parallel to the Minnesota line. This division would make us tbe only agricultural territory left in ths west and would give to us a com munity of interests which would bring harmony and speedy prosperity. For eighteen years we had struggled to build up Dakota and we now were! certainly en titled to a voice regarding the geographical boundaries of that which is tj become our state. Bartlett Tripp opposed the Saunders scheme wilh'all the strength of his elo quence. Tbe proposed remnant of Dakota would give us a shape in which all of na ture's requirments In the tnterests of pro gress would be reversed. It was an east and west length of territory we wanted and not a north and south length. With tbe former we) would bcome a homogeneous people, with the latter our interests would never combine and our advancement would be stayed. He did not deem it good policy to (enter upon any compromise—to remons rate with robbers. Wyoming and Montana had opposed any sacrifice of their domains, and had joined with the Black Hills and Bismarck to take the whole new territory from Dakota. This combination placed our delegate to congress in a pecu liar position, as he represented alike eastern Dakota, Bismarck and the Black Hills. He thought that when the people of the Hills and of eastern Dakota came to know each other better there would be a good feeling between the two sections. It was our duty to prompt our delegate to this matter and his duty to act for the interests of the ma jority of his constituents. Judge Brookings insisted on retaining all of Dakr.t south of tbe 40th parallel for tbe future state of Dakota. He didn't believe in any compromises. He believed in flght ine for our right:, and suggested the pro priety of sending a strong memorial to congress. Baitlett Tripp suggested thst communl cation be had with other portions of the territory on this subject. He moved that commit'ee of five, of which Judge Brook ings be chairman, be appointed to draft res olutions. Tne motion was adopted, and the chair appointed Judge Brookings, Bart lett Tripp, Gen. Beadle, Gov. Pennington and George W. KingBbury as such commit tee. On motion of Bartlett Tripp, Gov. Ed munds was added to that committee. A motion was made by Judge Brookings that it was the sense of the meeting that protest should be made against a division of the territory as proposed in the Saunders' bill or anything similar to it. The motion was adopted. On motion the committee appointed was instructed to correspond with parties in va rious portions of the territory upon this sub ject On motion the meeting adjourned.
